So I have stopped taking drugs for the foreseeable future and am trying to look into other hobbies to fill the void it left which seems to be going quite well now once I got over the initial bump.

I stopped DJing a long time ago but have been getting back into music in general as a hobby (whereas before I wrote it off almost completely for many years) and am considering buying an mp3 deck so then I'll be able to DJ whatever style I like.

I will likely take drugs again in future but I want it to be from a place of adding to the party rather than it being my sole outlet- I realized recently I had pretty much no life and just relied on drugs so am gonna force myself to enjoy other things for a while.

I did get into gabber for a bit on my last stimulant phase and have been a dnb head since I was 16 (now 27), as well as happy hardcore (that was my speed era :D) though obvsiously apart form dnb they are not really conducive to being enjoyed without drugs (you can hark on about exceptions all you like but exceptions don't prove the rule :)).

I think dnb will stay with me since it has so much depth (the good stuff at least) that it can be appreciated on all levels.

Most of the others just instill anxiety in me now I'm not on drugs and I just wanna distance myself from them as far as I can and write them from my dark history :D (melodramatic).

So what are some other genres which are slow that I could enjoy djing but still have some life in them? I really enjoy warp/rephlex records stuff as they are full of emotion while mostly being pretty laid back- aphex and ceephax being a couple of my favs.

Don't anyone dare say dubstep :D each their own but I've never been able to enjoy that stuff thinking it a weak hybrid of dnb and grime.

I have been into some oldskool acid and techno i.e early 90's stuff which is pretty cool. I think dnb is the one that will stay though.

As I said though since I don't have to pay for the music I can give whatever I like a whirl and see what takes my fancy.

So in general I want emotional (electronic) type stuff but nice and slow(ish i.e not going beyond 160 absolute max) to avoid the panic attacks I am prone to that is also good to mix at home as a rekindled hobby.

Ah ye breakbeat is a good call but I recall finding it hard to find bb I like...

I like techy breakbeat- I thought that was known as nuskool breaks but when I tried that on youtube most of it was still swag.

I really like the same music on or off drugs.

The music comes first for me. Always

:)

^Yeah same here. If you can't really enjoy the music without drugs you probably are not much of a fan. Although, I don't think I could enjoy dubstep with or without drugs.

you should check out this site.

you might find something you like. and its free!

btw. I find chicago house to be more enjoyable sober than on drugs.

It's nice to drug at cool EDM events, but the really good stuff doesn't require any drugs. It takes you to other places all by itself. :)

Yeah i can really let go with dnb sober a great tune is that remix of the fugees ready or not, i think it was andy c or micky finn and aphrodite.Breaks are great but for me the best event i went to sober was tiesto at the 02, awesome.
You say you like gabber well i dont know how much you know about the U.K dance scene from 1997-01/02 but i will give you the names of some shit from that period, you see 97-02 was when hard house ruled the roost of uk clubland before this electro bollocks took over, sweat and mitsubishi's were king and life was sweet, now i can enjoy it sober or mashed.
Sorry i can't do links as i am thick but look these up.
Hard house- Anything by Tony de vit but these are pearlers-
1.Are you all ready
2.The dawn
3.The remix of louise's naked
4.The naughty north and sexy south.
Seek for B.K,Andy Farley, SJ,Pete wardman,Fergie,Anne savage, lisa lashes and you shall find.
Non dance music that gets me dancing--Jools holland and his rythm and blues band, any boogie woogie stuff.
One more tune that is awesome is the infadels-future of the gravity boy, failing that no one needs drugs to get down with soul/funk james brown or funky house.

good psy- / goa trance is better than drugs anyway :)

you might want to look at progressive psytrance if you're after slower stuff (it's around 135bpm). goa trance imho is deeper and more emotional, but a pain in the ass to dj.

Rotterdam terror corpse gabba techno is always a pleasure.
Great at weddings, childrens parties and bahmitsfas

=D

I would recommend searching for mixes by James Zabiela. I am actually listening to his Kazantip 2008 mix and it's just out of this world. James Zabiele really knows how to mix tracks from different genres in very professional manner. Nowadays he play more tech-house, but it's still a pleasure listen to him DJ.

You shouldn't need drugs to enjoy music. This is probably the most annoying thing to me when I go to shows-- people who think they need to be high to listen to/watch music. Ridiculous.
