Really, what happened to social?

The facts don't lie....

During a study made April-May 2002, Australian Social averaged 5.6 threads/day and 127 posts/day.

A followup study was conducted February-March 2003. Australian Social dropped to 3.0 threads/day and 71 posts/day.

During this time, the overall traffic at Bluelight increased significantly.

I agree that "quality" is subjective and things can be cyclical, but there is a clear trend across Bluelight that regional discussion is drying up. Overall traffic at Bluelight continues to increase (up ~20% in the last 15 months) while activity is actually decreasing in the regional forums. I shared this data with MrGeezer and he confirmed that the same trend had become apparent in the European forums.

Bluelight has become more integrated and there are not as many geographic divisions. That does not mean Australian Social can't be interesting or have good threads, but people now prefer to spend more time in the main community forums.

well there you go, now you have a thread in social that you relate to, ie: this one.
however, using the search engine would've turned up, no doubt, many interesting matches... and maybe made good reading or even bumping. there's always more to the board than meets the eye, i say.
you've been here long enough to know it all.

id like to say that i have the same feelings. i can remeber the days where i could wait to read bluelight and associated topics, but to be honest nowadays, its pretty fucking boring.
its always been a sort of arms length for me, because besides bopgirl, im not really into most of the musci that you people seem to be into. and despite what you all say, i really do think that the socialism in this forum is based on that. and drugs obviously.
the ironic thing is that now i am really getting a taste for drum and base, and here in the UK what they call garage. its more the vibe, and tis the people.
which probably means i been hanging around the wrong people. fuck, is this post off topic or what???

Hence why i put a disclaimer at the bottom of my post kitty!!! 8(

that's wasn't a dig at you tali, my very first post in this thread said to all the whingers basically to STFU and put in some effort if they're not liking this place... that was just my way of reasserting it with out having to make any intelligent effort :) I had hoped to ease the sting with the :p but *rolls eyes* emoticons blow cause nobody takes any notice of them anyhow. (sorry I was tired and it was easier then making the post that i'm about to make now which has no referance to you whatsoever)

OK

Seriously I just don't get it when people whinge, especially when they have made no constructive effort to start the kind of thread they wish to see here. Expecting some psycic fairy to magically come up with a topic they will like and want to respond to 8)

I mean seroulsy whinge whinge whinge omg it's too strict!!! whinge whinge whinge omg it's like the lounge!!!

Not one person who has made a dig at the quality of this forum has made an effort to create threads of the quiality they would like, nor have they made any attempts at intelligent discussion within many of the existing threads.

Yes I agree the rollups thread is kinda lame BUT a year a go we "had a who likes vegemite" or something along those lines ohhhhhhhhh and who's forgotten the haagan das (i know i've spelt that worng) thread if that wasn't a hodge-podge of cliquiy bs then i don't know what was :p Even better who remembers the "no more drugs til utopia threa"?

Everyone needs to take a step back and think about the posts they used to contribute to a year ago and realise that: hey guess what you're old and jaded now, the the newbies have their fun and if you want more intelligent conversation get of your ass and create it.

[/rant]

Ok so I'm slightly biassed, I mod this forum and I do love it, even when it's stupid and some of the threads are downright lame, but this isn't a new occurrance people damn take a look through the archives "look out your window right now, what do you see?" how is that any different from the threads that are around now.

Get off your jaded snobbish high horses amd make some effort if you want things changed. A thread whinging about it does aboslutely nothing about it except make another one of those lame threads you're talking about.

I could go on and on and give a rebuttal for every whinging post in here - especially any saying this is exactly like the lounge but I'm goingnto shut up now because all I really need to say is:

If you don't like it get off your ass and make some effort to make it into what you want, there's no little elf inside the computer who's going to read your mind and go hey this is lame lets make up some good threads. At the end of the day the content in this forum is decided by YOU - the posters. If you don't have the intelligeance to come up with the kind of discussion you wish to see here or the will power to contiune the discussion despite the postwhoring bullshit THEN DON'T COMPLAIN!

I don't see any of you making any effort whatsoever to counteract the things you are whinging about, and you have got to be joking if you want us to return to the iron fist rule. Social was so dry and boring it needed the change.

eddi spageddi has already mentioned that there ARE threads past the first page...

fuckit i'm late for work so I can't continue this. Basically make an effort to change what you don' t like - there's no magical little fairy to help you out.

Ahh Drum n bass, the last true home of the jaded elitist fucker!

Concord Dawn ROCK!

Kitty- (this is in no way a personal attack, we're friends, so yeh)

But i was in no way winging lol, if u had of noticed in my first line i had written blah blha blah etc etc etc.. bit of a sarcastic tone...

i merely posed to ask a few questions as to why there arent any more opinionated threads... i then clearly stated that i basically couldnt care anymore anyway.

im not winging. i dont care what bluelight is like anymore.
it is merely to me, something i browse through to kill time either at work or at home and randomly post.

and as haste said- i also am only interested in a few threads going... some albeit stupid threads, but other than those mainly just those that provide some interest (that im interested in AWAY from bluelight ie BUFFY) hehe...

its social. people be social. thats half why some other places have been opened like current events n politics, words blah blah...
i only use words and event away from social... only one of the three requiring brainpower.

heh yeah - exactly that's why I made sure i said that the rest of the post has nothing to do with what you said - i was merely being lazy cause I'm grumpy and tired :p

I agree with what you say, this is social. *shrug* it's not you that's making any whinging posts - I don't expect everyone to come up with deep and insightful discussion but the people who whinge about it... the change starts with them.

It's something we chat about amongst the mods, we realise we're not as objective, we love this place, it's our baby and you can rarely please everyone.

I guess I just get upset when people (and you haven't done this - quoting your post was a lazy way of making a point and I do appologise) whinge and make no effort to change things either.

*hugs for tali* Sorry if it looked like i was attacking you :)

I'd have to say I really agree with Thoth on this one, and its something I launched into in the irc channel (pretty sure PsychoKitten got to watch) a few weeks ago but it also has some really sobering realities.

A year or so ago, AusSocial was dominated by a very regular group of people, enough to both contribute constantly to good threads, and with the creative inspiration to keep a variety of topics moving through the front page.

People that made stupid or useless posts didn't need to be warned by the moderators, as the regulars did a great job of 'bringing the smack down'. Now the inherent problem... How do new users integrate with the regulars? And also, how come a site thats able to be accessed by anyone on the planet, is dominated by a crew of 30 or 40 people that all know each other in real life quite well? :)

The movement from regional to global discussion is apparent, the regular posters dont know each other intimately irl, the forums lost a lot of the 'personal' flavour it used to carry (and I dont mean that in regards to myself or anyone else, its just a visible aspect of watching people that know each other fairly well interact).

I'm aware everythings cyclical, everyone has their jaded winge, the new come and the old go rah rah... but Thoths IQ points comment? It's getting like a NewStand packed with old Womans Day adverts.

Dont whinge dont whinge, put in the effort yourselves etc etc. I've always tried to make a bit of effort with how I present posts, the thoughts I put into them and if I'm starting a thread what kind of response it will generate. How about everyone just realises what they put on here can be viewed by anyone on the planet with access to the internet.

I'm pretty sure I put a chunk of text like this into a thread a while ago and it got glazed over by most, I mean after all - it *is* longer then 2 lines, so why read the entire thread right?

My point (if any): If what your about to put on a global message board really isnt *that* amazingly interesting (cus come on people, if you cant be honest with yourself then what hope have you got) - dont press 'post', dont press 'start new thread' - just stfu :)

For an amazingly topical article about social groups on the internet and what is required to support them, see: Group Enemy

There is a lot in it that BL gets right, which is why it has survived in an environment where becoming jaded seems to be part of the process.

^^ good reading, how did you stumble on that.

I try to reserve blatant praise on here but I'll also use this just to add extra attention to the point!

Seth that link is brilliant, easily one of the best things I've read recently, and the most interesting piece I have seen on the social interaction with technology.

Everyone, go read ! :)

Thoth:

The social forum has really gone downhill because the new topics created are not "Bluelight social" threads. They are standard message board topics. They are focussing less on the topics specific to us and more on the topics that *could* be relevant to us which end up being relevant to anyone.

We can do better than this but people really need to think about creating topics that they thought of themselves instead of seeing what reactions Bl peoples get from amusing/confrontational topics in other forums.

Blers-in-general:

Post when *you* think of something good. The forum was way better when there were less topics and more thought.

eg: A thread named "So on a scale of 9-10, how hot am I?" is not contributing to the site.

So how hot am I?

The cycle is coming around again! Huzzah!

Sheesh Guys, this cycle is early going by my records.

hmmmm..... these poor green/bluelighters, haven't even had a chance to meetup, party, get to know everyone, select who they like/dislike, exchange girlfriends and boyfriends within the group, fall out with bluelight friends, break off in segmented groups and basically watch the infrastructure of the group dynamics fall apart as the world speeds past (pardon the pun).

I HEREBY NAME THIS CYCLE THE BMC... BLUELIGHT MENSTRUAL CYCLE

Anyone wish to extend what words of wisomd I have shared.

Except you Elver.... You shut your trap you sarcastic yet amusing bastard.
