Really Stupid Question

Ok, I'm 90% sure of the answer on this, but I just want some other opinions to prove someone wrong. My friend who takes Atenolol (a beta blocker usually used to regulate your heartbeat) was telling me about it. She said, "Yeah, my doctor said that they won't give Atenolol to just anyone, because you can get high if you crush it into a powder and sniff it and people were doing it nowadays" She said her doctor told her that. Why would your doctor tell you that you can get high on something? And just how can you get high from railing a BETA BLOCKER?? Please someone tell me either I'm wrong or I'm right.

if you're shifting your definition of "recreational" drastically, THEN....
it will still have no recreational value.
My question to you is: do you know exactly what a beta blocker's function is?

Yes, I know what the function of a beta blocker is, it affects the response to some nerve impulses which reduces the need for oxygen and blood for the heart so in turn, it regulates it. But I just wanted to know if a beta blocker would somehow "Stimulate some part of the brain" as my friend tried to rationalize her statements with, to get you "really fucked up" as she put it. And as I'm not a doctor and didn't know if it would get you "high" (And yes I'm speaking recreationally) or not, I was just asking. Told you, a really stupid question.

No way in hell!!! A beta-blocker is an antagonist at the norepinepherine 2 site. First of all norephinepherine antagonists aren't known for being recreational. Hell aren't most anti-psychotics antagonists at NE receptors (even if there primary action is on DA). Also reboxitine an antidepressant seems to work by increasing the amount of NE present in the brain (tho this is just suggestive).
Also the drug probably doesn't cross the blood brain barrier much...tho some things about side effects did include depression and some minor hallucination (don't take this to mean it will get you good high...an adverse affect of banging your head on the wall is hallucinations) so maybe it has some slight ability to cross the BBB.
BBB are prescribed for the heart they don't WANT them to affect the brain so commercially availible ones are designed not to cross the BBB so they have the heart affect but not the CNS affect. See the various topics about beta-blockers and stims.
So DEFINATLY no, maybe her doc was worried about her using it to take more speed. More likely this is a confusion of atenolol with adderal.

Atenolol is a beta-1 selective antagonist - cardiovascular effects only. The only reported CNS side effects of beta blokcers are occasional nightmares, confusion and insomnia - but nothing pleasant by any means and this tends to be only in elderly patients on multiple medications. As you have correctly suspected it has no recreational psychodelic effects !
