RE: UV testing of MDMA...pls help with any info!!!

This is to anyone who might know about this...
A few years back, when travelling in amsterdaam,my partner went to a club. The chick at reception knew they weren't from there, so she tested our MDMA for them under some sort of UV light, when she looked at it, told them to only have a third each, as it was pure....needless to say they were rolling hard from a third of a pill!!!!
Is there any way of testing a pill under light? Do you need a chemistry degree to be able to do that? or can anyone purchase a black light and do it? WHat do you look for???? We are very keen, as with an eztest, it only gives you an indication of a MDXX substance, not purity...very keen to follow this up.

Using the correct UV light (I forget if it is shortwave or longwave) MDMA (and aswell methamphetamine, but not speed) should glow.
I haven't explored it much, but when testing in the club, I have a UV light above me, and I find it causes some glowing.

thanks aj and the gamer,
My partner went quite a few years ago, and can't remember the name of the club...it was a bit of a party holiday.

hmmm...if i could find out if it was short or long wave, it would be a very useful tool to utilise along side the eztest. I guess the eztest would indicate whether there were methampetamines in the pill, then you could use the ligt to give an indication of the purity of pill...
1 query though- does mdea or mda show up as well???

mdea, mda, and mdma all react with the ez tester. Unfortunately due to the very similar chemical structures of these compounds the differences in reaction are slight, and with non-pure samples (ie fillers and binders which effect the distinctness of the reaction) its often hard to be sure.
Don't worry about long or short wave, UV light is UV due to its wavelength. Myself and some fellows here in Perth, Australia are hoping to get some detailed chromatography testing set up sometime in the next few months. Altho it could be 6 months away at this stage. This method involves the use of UV light also.
I can't think of how other than intensity of the glow that you could tell the purity/strength of a sample tho, sorry. Only way I can think of doing it would be through chromatography, and that would take at least 20-30mins to test, hence probably not done in the club. I'll be very interested if anyone can explain this.

entropope,
thanx for the info...i'm from brisbane, so i understand that we definitely need some sort of method whereby pillers can have a thorough knowledge of what's in a pill...re:chromatography. How will you be setting it up? I know that in the US, it is legal to send a pill in for testing, but i'm not sure how the good ol' boys in blue would react here!!! (they'd probably keep them for themselves!!!

)
will you be testing only pills that you have?
I have looked into TLC myself, but being a layman with only a VERY basic knowledge of chemistry, i was a bit lost...

I have contacted the qld distributor of eztest, and we are in the process of meetings regarding stalls at raves, so this is something that i shall bring up...he's got a PhD in chemistry.
take care,
samadhi

TheGamer, amphetamine glows under right UV conditions (wavelenght 200 to 400 nm, usually
254 nm or 366 nm). If a sample does not show any absorption in the 200 to 400 nm range,
the sample contains no amphetamine or the quantity of amphetamine is too small to be
detected.
