A big problem that we have down here, and most likely in many other countries, is alcohol fueled violence. Particularly in clubs, pubs and other nightspots where alcohol is served. One argument used to support drug criminalisation is that if we legalise other drugs, it will only increase the violence that is already caused by alcohol. But drugs like ecstasy, marijuana, lsd, mushrooms, etc, do not cause as much violence as alcohol does.

For those that attend raves regularly, how much violence such as fights and stabbings do you see compared to places where alcohol is predominently served. Do you agree that a party full of people on ecstasy, marijuana, lsd etc, will have less violence then those where alcohol is served?

In the druggie clubs in the nearest city to me that have frequented over the years very little violence came from the customers but I've seen quite a bit of it from the gangs controlling who sells the drugs in them, of course if the customers could buy their pills ect from a chemists on the way to the club that would not be a problem.

The nearest town is mainly all drinkers it's a nightmare someone gets glassed, bottled or stabbed every weekend, anyone with half a brain would keep well away from it.

Yep, thats what happens here every weekend. I think police would have alot less stress if people were on ecstasy.

I've never been at a rave where there was violence. I was rough-housed a bit once but it was nothing major.

The events I go to now are organized under the alcohol free model, which seems to be popular because it prevents property damage.

Yep. Same here. Raves usually consist of hundreds of people having fun and being peaceful for the most part, with maybe one or two noobs freaking out on some sort of psychedelic, whereas everywhere I go that serves primarily alcohol has all kinds of aggressive stuff happening regularly.

I think it was the 1999/2000 NYE where the police in Sydney said that violence was remarkably low because so many in the crowd were on ecstasy instead of alcohol.

There was a period in NYC during the late 90’s and early 2000’s where tons of kids were getting robbed but that’s about it for widespread violence. There was a notorious gang called BTS that used to go to most raves, they were known for selling fake drugs and robbing people that looked like they were too messed up. They actually staged fights a few times and would go around pick pocketing the kids that would stand there and watch.

Every time I go out to a pub or a club where people drink there will be at least one violent incident. I've seen people get their faces smashed in in the middle of the dancefloor and such.

Never been to an illegal free rave, but all the legal 'raves' I've been to where more people are on illegal drugs than alcohol I haven't seen a single violent incident. And I go to a lot.

I haven't been to any raves in ages now, but the ones I used to goto hardly ever had any violence, there was still stealing of peoples stuff (unattended bags) and ripping people off for drugs (taking money and not coming back) and selling totally bunk pills on purpose, but it was pretty rare. That sometimes caused scenes and some agro, but it usually got sorted out pretty quickly, i'm sure there were fights sometimes, but I don't recall any.

In comparison to the major drinking venues the violence was really minimal, no stabbings or glassings or king hits. Some people would come to the raves drunk, but if they were going to last all night till sunrise they usually would take some chems of some type, otherwise they would not have the energy to last and they would be crashing out in someones car or around the edges of the venue. Some people would go straight, but that was pretty rare too, some punters and dj's and promoters would be straight, I used to doit occasionally.

After I stopped going (to raves) in the early 2000's some of my younger friends would report that lads (gang types) would roll people in the car parks and around the outside of the venue and sometimes inside the event for money or drugs, but it seemed pretty rare.

Generally I think a crowd on mdma and other chems or pot would be alot safer to be around than a bunch of very drunk people. I recall at one or two of the larger raves some people would be so high on whatever drug that they'd do really stupid shit like jump off a balcony or stairwell and I recall one person died I think and you get the occasional overdose, but for how many people go and how many events there are it's pretty rare. Same happens with alcohol events, some people act like idiots and do some really stupid shit sometimes hurting themselves or other people.

Never been to an illegal free rave
We had a run of these types of raves, 'free loves' (there were 2 of them and i'm sure there were a few other ones) come to mind and some doofs in parks or fields or on beaches where it was free and the party was illegal and it was generally the same as the ticketed events, most people on drugs and no violence usually.

Edit -

There was a shooting at a rave in Syd in the mid 90's at 'Raveland' I think it was called at the graffiti hall of fame (Alexandria, gone now) that was pretty bad.

I bump into a drunk at a club = "What the fuck man, you spilled my drink! I'm gonna fuck you up!"

I bump into an etard at a rave = "Hi there stranger! Let's hug! Oh man I love this song!!!"

Not really a DiTM thread. Sometimes people deserve to get hit. Why is violence a bad thing when people use it to defend them selves?
Fuck this thread. You're a racist.

if you need to defend yourself then it most likely is because of violence ? or am i missing something trip.more?

You shouldn't be in a position where you need to defend yourself if no one else is being violent.

Somebody's been drinking rather than smoking weed and taking MDMA :p

I love the less selfish, more peaceful nature of events with little or no alcohol. It's glorious.

I think the answer is fairly obvious, to be honest. Or is it just me? At the free parties (raves) here in the UK I have rarely seen any violence, infact I can only really remember one situation where there was a bit of a fight because a couple of guys were going around robbing people, but they definitely weren't part of the usual party crowd and more or less everyone at the party gathered together to force them away... Compared to, say, a venue close to the center of town where there is alcohol being served and more people drunk than on drugs, there are lots of fights every night..

I am not sure if legalisation would increase violence or not, but I really doubt it. MDMA and lsd/mushrooms etc don't make many people violent.

Agreed! My experience is also that there's litte to no violence in the rave scene, opposite to bars, pubs, clubs etc..

The only people Ive seen fight at a rave were the drunk people. Taking MDMA I ended up losing my friend, and hung about with some random guy, and then his pals, do that with drunk people and youd get stabbed.

The club I used to go to which is now closed, had a zero violence policy and any outside dealer that tried to set up shop was kicked out. The only time any fights would happen was 10pm to 2pm, when the Hip-Hop was playing on the main floor. After 2pm it was techno, trance and house, and the hip-hop people would leave and only a crowd of 30 people was left. All of us would be on ecstasy, ketamine, mushrooms, acid, or GHB. Nothing violent ever occurred. It was amazing.
