Is there any relationship between the psychedelic/LSD culture and Rave culture?
OR is rave culture a mockery of the original Leary insight?

Interesting topic- the Wikipedia page on raves is quite extensive and covers this relationship: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rave

My own opinion is that every generation has their own sub-cultures and underground (and not so underground) party scenes, and each one stems from another to some extent, and has an overlap. The older generation tends to look at the newer one with criticisms and perhaps some resentment, whereas the newer one tends to think the older one just doesn't understand.

I'm not sure if rave culture would be the same without MDMA- though people do many other drugs, MDMA is unique and I don't think the same music, lights, clothes, and over-all PLURiness would have occurred. I've heard comments that ravers are this generations hippies, which is a comparison I like, and hope we can evolve to fulfill.

Thank you. But that would be a strange comparison. I mean, hippies were peace loving individualists... Ravers are just another form of consumers...
It's to me strange that MDMA creates such... capitalist attitude, where as shrooms usually creates a much more 'earthy' and anti-consumer attitude.
Perhaps because the one is natural, the other is pure synthesis.

I mean, hippies took shrooms, pot and acid, and wanted to change the world, to think in new ways; And ravers take MDMA and just wanna dance...lol

They love to dance.. AND love eachother:) lol
Don't you know what PLUR means?
It can be compared to hippies.

no...what IS PLUR
But loving to dance and loving each other isn't "enough" to compare them to hippies.
A raver is never gonna stage a protest, or...create underground newspapers...or change the word, really. Now are they?
Just like contemporary pot-heads. Pot USED to make people creative and inventive. Now a pot head is synonymous with eating cheese and watching cartoons... Has the government put some chemicals in pot to make potheads pure consumers? lol

Peace Love Unity Respect. lol.
And I am not one to compare them both, I can just see how some people could think to compare. They aren't comparing them in every aspect. I think moreso just in the loving way. And also because it's like a scene/movement of people in our day. But no, i do not think that ravers would ever do those things haha.

That's another thing...There really isnt a proper movement... Ravers are too... self-centered to organize. Where is the Ravers answer to the Yippies?
Where are the MDMD/Ravers- authors? Painters? ...

Maybe someone else has an argument or an opinion towards this :b
because i really don't have much to say on this topic.
Also, i probably shouldnt have used to word movement.

Being new to Bluelight, I'm expecting an admin to come in now saying: "Your question has been answered. This thread is CLOSED" *sound of iron gates closing"
LOL

When hippies were the young generation, there were many criticisms that only a small group of them actually were involved in political activism, and that the majority were just a bunch of kids on drugs enjoying music and complaining.

I certainly don't think ravers as a whole play a similar role to hippies- most of our events are way too commercialized and for-profit, but that's been the way most music events have gone over the past couple decades. I have seen examples of kindness and generosity at raves myself- probably because I surround myself with friends that are kind loving people. You can't look at behavior at massive raves as an example of what rave culture is about, because IMO massives are not raves- they are mainstream corporate music festivals that feature EDM- there is a huge difference.

I'm not sure why you consider ravers to be "just consumers", where as hippies were peace loving individuals. Some hippies were assholes, and some ravers are amazing people- consumption is something all humans do. One author annonymously wrote a fairly famous piece on MDMAhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2001/jul/14/books.guardianreview, and Alex Shulgin himself is a beautiful writer and successful author. I'm not aware of any famous painters who openly use MDMA, or beyond those two examples, but they're both brilliant people as far as I'm concerned.

In response to your thread being closed, I'm happy to do so if you feel your question has been resolved.

I like debate, and I'm happy to keep it open so long as it's not a blatant attack against rave culture. This is Ecstasy Discussion, not rave discussion- you'll find plenty of people here who detest rave culture, and have a relationship with MDMA that has nothing to do with it.

My point was that I DIDN'T want this thread to be closed. Ever. This interests me, and I wanna discuss it in depth. Too sleepy right now, but I'll be back!

This is ecstacy discussion, not cuture debate.

I want to drop a meme but ill contain myself. It would have been good though & contained ronald mcdonald.

I'm fairly new to meme-culture. Now I can't thing about anything else but this McDonald meme... Go on, share! For me!

Personally, I think they're completely different animals. The psychedelic scene is about exploring vast expanses of the human emotion that have to deal with 'place' and long term solutions and tempered satisfaction and dramatically respectful spirituality.

The rave culture is about candy and teddy bears.

Yes Im bias.
