Ecstasy : The Complete Guide : A Comprehensive Look at the Risks and Benefits of MDMA

Holland, an attending psychiatrist at New York's Bellevue Hospital and an authority on street drugs, here compiles articles from numerous experts on Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (also known as MDMA, Adam, and Ecstasy). She succeeds admirably in her twofold goal of providing complete, reliable information to recreational users and educating the public about potential clinical uses for the drug. MDMA was used as an adjunct to psychotherapy for over a decade until the Drug Enforcement Administration classified it as a Schedule I drug in 1985. It then went underground and is today increasingly popular as a party drug. After looking at MDMA's history, pharmacology, and legal status, the text discusses its potential clinical uses in the treatment of such psychiatric conditions as depression, schizophrenia, and posttraumatic stress syndrome. Various chapters also address MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, current international research, and political issues. Finally, risks of recreational use and ways to mitigate them are discussed. Well researched yet written in very understandable language, this volume makes a strong case for studying and legalizing MDMA for therapeutic purposes, without minimizing the potential dangers of abuse. Nice post. Doesn't suprise me though that some have left PLUR out of ecstasy culture. Always thought it's been a bit of a front myself. Mind you I'm jaded.
Not quite an Ecstasy book but a cracker nonetheless: White Rabbit - Journeys in Psychedelia. A bunch of short stories by authors, musicians, historical figures, doctors etc on their specific experiences with varous substances. Beautifully written. Reading the eloquent descriptions of the various trips really took me there. What Tolkien is to fantasy.

There's an English book called "High Society" I read which was a compilation of short stories submitted for a competition, there were so many entries they made a book, some of the stories will have you laughing your arse off and others will make you feel ill. I don't know who published it but if you see it, grab it

Disco Biscuits and Disco 2000 (which is available in the Kew Library believe it or not) are both worth a read. Compilations of short stories, edited by Sarah Champion.
I love The Ecstasy Club by Douglas Rushkoff, I just bought it for the second time after someone permanently borrowed my copy.
Then there's Ecstasy by Irvine Welsh - don't be fooled by the title into thinking this is a nice plurry read. There is one story with a couple of pill-heads in it, but it is without a doubt one of the grossest things I have ever read, beaten only by the other story in the book in terms of completely fucked-up revoltingness.

I'm fiction-starved at the moment, and just wondering if anyone knows of any more novels/fiction that include experiences like these, apart from the ones already listed. I'm a bit over reading factual accounts and research *grin*. Looking forward to reading the Ecstasy club though

It's a collection of essays which aim to "document and comment on the history of the Australian culture with a focus on specific scenes, localities, events, technics and music." Hey everyone!
I am currently doing Honours as part of my Law degree at the Australian National University. The working title of my thesis is:
'An Evaluation Of Legal Strategies' Efficacy In Combating Ecstasy Use Within The Australian Capital Territory’s Dance Community'.
My thesis will be divided into three Parts:
'Past' – Conduct a genealogy of ecstasy's illegality in Australia. Problematise its illegal status in light of effects, harm, scientific research and legal goals.
'Present' – From both theoretical and empirical perspectives, review and critically assess the appropriate A.C.T. legislative schemes as well as the AFP's specific operations.
'Future' – Having deconstructed whether current legal strategies achieve the objectives behind criminalising ecstasy, propose innovative and more effective responses for legislators and police.
Anyway ... just wondering if someone with a long memory can help. About two years ago on Bluelight someone posted a link to another thesis on ecstasy use. It was really insightful and focussed on American dance culture. If ANYONE remembers, has a copy, or knows where it is on the web, please post or email me. While im soliciting, please email me anything that could be useful. A zillion thanks.

Thanks heaps miss apple Should keep me going for a leetle while! Ordered Ecstasy Club in Borders yesterday, and also picked up something called reMix by Jon Courtenay Grimwood. Apparently it's William Gibson meets Quentin Tarantino, the reviews on Amazon speak highly although there's no cover shot (a shame too, it's most funky, and my scanner stopped working, but you know what they say about books and their covers...). It's not about the scene necessarily, but very techno/gothic/futuristic cool stuff, should satisfy my cravings for some fiction along with the other stuff you've mentioned .
