Was it the weather?

Not been about, around a week, other than two brief moments to gurn about Ulster Bank. So, how has everyone been keeping? :D

No, it was poor crowd control - excessive, I thought, making everyone queue for ages to get into venues which were nowhere near capacity. This made people give up and try to get into other venues, where they hit more queues. So people jumped barriers and stuff. I think the council probably wanted to shut it down from the start. That's what I heard, anyway. Something to do with it being one of the council's involved in the Olympics, operating tighter security / health and safety measures.

My conspiracy theory is they wanted a dress rehearsal for crowd control at the Games.

They should learn from their mistakes and immediately transfer the Olympic venue to Butlins Minehead, where previous BLOC's have run smoothly. There's even a ready made Olympic Village.

So they just shut it down? Jesus.
Luckily people are getting refunds. At least you got to see, what sounded like, an awesome show from Amon Tobin.

I thought it was the Bloc folk/organisers that decided to pull the plug, not the 'authorities'?

Sure i read that on the Guardian comments here
This article was amended on 7 July 2012. The original headline wrongly gave the impression that it was police, rather than organisers, who decided to close the festival.

Hrmn, just reading this article on David Miscavige and I'm kinda totally surprised to learn that Beck is a scientologist. WTF?!

I think Butlins are about to go tits up (or their future is decidedly rocky at best anyhoo), so that's possibly why it swapped

ATP have just rescheduled their Xmas ATP Curated by The National, from Minehead to one of their old faves Camber Sands. They stipulated their long term deal with Butlins has now ceased.

@MM You're on to something. Opens up a whole new field of drug and electronic music based games. Personally I'm all for ketamine darts, a sport I've practiced on several occasions.

Maybe they "decided" but I'm sure they were pressured into it. Council had loads of CCTV vans all over the place and the police were mob handed with loads of riot vans. Pretty sure the council will have stipulated the queues for venues too, never been to a festival with such tight crowd control.

All the comments to most of the articles I read, made by many people attending seemed to agree that the venue was way over subscribed, and that the only thing to do was to shut it down, mainly for health and safety reasons. I doubt Bloc had much choice due to that factor alone (80% of comments accused the promoters of being greedy twats). The consensus seemed to be from the comments that they'd oversold the venue, and comments about security saying somewhere in the region of 20,000 tickets were sold.

Even if it was only 15,000, based on the individual arena sizes, capacity for the venue fell well short of 15,000

Well, it's massive incompetence to fail to work out the capacity of a venue in this day and age, no? Surely it's a well trodden path. Plus my info re the olympics stuff comes from a "source"! Not the conspiracy stuff but the overall tightened crowd control. But yeah, i also heard there were more tickets floating around than were sold! Incompetence or deliberate overcrowding? Hmmm...

EDIT: 00:38 Just got back home, bit of a trek as I didn't think to check my last train home from Edinburgh and ended up having to get a bus after an hour's wait! Dick. Cat still alive so at least that worked out. Wee lie in tomorrow I think!

Only thing we saw before it turned to shit was Amon Tobin at 8.30 on Friday. He was amazing, fantastic sounds and co-ordinated "3D" light show. On the stage were dozens of large white cubes formed into an abstract 3D structure. In the middle of it was a larger white cage, with a fine mesh. Amon Tobin sat in the cage and controlled his equipment, apparently with sweeping hand gestures and stuff. Fantastically elaborate, 3D animated visuals, perfectly synchronised with the music, were projected onto this structure. Sometimes just the edges of the cubes were illuminated, creating a glowing 3D mesh of light.

At the start, the lights in Tobin's cage were switched off so you couldn't see him, we didn't realise where he was, then at some point the lights came on to reveal him in the midst of the audo-visual chaos he was creating.

That was superb. Then it turned to shit!

Yeah I've seen Amon's ISAM tour on youtube, looks like he had the same set up with 3D projection mapping. Judging by the lineup the only act I would have really wanted to see was Amon Tobin anyway.

Anyone else having a good day?
