RADIO: Triple J - Hack: Illicit Drug Advertising Campaign

The interview was a hoot! Poor old Pynie didn't know what to say - couldn't even get his facts right.

The sad thing is truth has little impact on govt policy, or on who gets elected :(

We seem to be happily following the US lead on drug policy - I mentioned this in the other thread - but check out www.maximizingharm.com for a brutal attack on the "just say NO"/zero tolerance approach.

Good for arguing with your parents when they start quoting the booklet to you..

I love my drugs! But more, I love an un-biased media, and that interview was sooooo far from it. Having media coverage like that does not help any sort of pro-drug cause, because anyone who is on-the-fence is going to think 'what a biased bunch those drug people are... stuff them!' The pro-drug media needs to not stoop to the level of anti-drugs, as we all know, their campaigns don't work, or none of us would be reading this. Realistic un-biased discussion is the only way to promote safe drug use, or pro-drug legislation.

I'm really fuckin mad after this interview... Its worse than most of the governments anti-drug campaigns in its bias.., GRRR...

BTW, who was the guy doing the interview? I recognize the voice, but can't recall his name. I think he needs a nasty email.

media is always going to be biased in some way or another, its unfortunate but true, at least if we get both sides- the extreme right and extreme left people can make their own decision. i applaud stations like triplej for their left approach to things, it is greatly needed when 90% of the media is extremly right, just watch chanel 9 news or read the herald sun to know what i mean, and they reach a hell of a lot more people than triplej does

I'm pretty sure bluelight has been mentioned on jjj before.
It should be mentioned every time they do stories like monday's though.
After pyne dribbled slimy shit all over jjj's microphone they should have cut to some kid saying
"bluelight - get the facts"

Today's hack (Tuesday 26th april) contained a short interview with someone from NDARC. Basically futher discrediting Pyne by stating the number of deaths from illict substances.
Although she didn't say that there have been no deaths directly from ecstasy, she did say there was insignificant compared to the number's who use it.

What I wish is that when people in the media talk about ecstasy they should specify if they mean MDMA or "random other substances contained within pills".
 
Can someone rip a copy of the TV advert and post it up? I refuse to sit through hours of free-to-air crap to watch it :p

I thought the triple j presenter did a very good job during the interview and was well researched on the subject.
 
From a demand reduction perspective they are actually quite good. You have to understand the government has put out a campaign which is quite sound, as all of the things can and do happen (apart from the very uncommon thermal meltdown). The greatest injustice here is the massive amount of funding this campaign recieves compared to harm reduction.
 
^ I just can't agree with you there CM - even from a Demand Reduction perspective they are a crock. Now you'll hassle me for references ;) but there is research out there that says this kind of campaign has no impact on usage levels. The most effective education for young people doesn't focus on drug use at all - instead looking at self-esteem, resilience and conflict resolution skills.

Give me a few days to drag up the references..... (I know - slack)

I agree that they don't do much, but from a goverment perspective if they had to run ads, these are quite good because they show (generally) realistic side-effects. It I was in charge of the purse it would be a lot different, a HR approach, but that isn't going to happen in a hurry. The government could have done a lot worse with these ads.
 
I've only seen the e ad - and it's a very unbalanced representation of your typical night of doof-frenzy ;) It might make some people who don't use e decide not to try it, or confirm someone's decision not to try it. It's of no use at all to current e users - and in fact may expose them to more harms. I dragged out some links:

IMO - the current media campaign is a publicity stunt to make the govt look good - they couldn't care less if it has any impact on drug use or harms; as long as they get elected :( Yeahhh we're so TOUGH.... on DRUGS!!
 
*remembers the American anti-heroin ad's with the egg (your brain) and the Frying Pan (Heroin) and then what your brain is like on heroin (hit egg with frypan).... Worst ad ever!!!!
