I want to quit, and here comes this gem called Chantix that claims to be superior over other nicotine replacement.

http://www.chantix.com/

It is a prescription only nicotine recepter agonist and a nicotine blocker.

Has anyone had luck with this? Otherwise, what methods have you used besides cold turkey that have been successful?

I dont know anything about chantix but it sound's interesting.

In the past i have found the nicotine patch and the gum to be pretty useless. I found them to be counterproductive because they where both just a constant reminder that i was quitting smoking. Plus the patch made me edgy and the gum made me feel sick.

When i was taking opiates for pain relief i found quitting to be pretty easy. The first time i successfully quit smoking (i quit for almost 2 year's) was when i was taking codeine in doses of about 90mg's every 4 to 6 hour's. I quit again when i was on morphine and i stayed off the smokes for a few month's that way.

A few month's ago i had a rather bad episode of bipolar and i took up smoking again. I eventually quit again early this month when i was on morphine and it was fairly easy although i did get some mood swing's the first few day's inspite of the mood stabilizer i was on. I think the seroquel and clonazepam i was on may have helped abit as well because they relaxed me and helped the insomnia abit.

This is not to say that opiates are a ideal or even a smart choice for giving up smoking because you could end up with a opiate addiction. Then a cigarette addiction would be the least of your worries. That would be like taking up drinking 151 to stop drinking beer. So i wouldnt advise that route at all.

Zyban also seemed to help as well. It took away most of my craving's after being on it for only a week or so. I had to stop taking the stuff because it had the potential to interact very negatively with a medication i was on at the time.

You may want to give the zyban a try. Alot of people seem to find that it work's and it help's with the depression and lack of motivation that you get when you give up smoking.

I've had my battle with opiates, and I'm awfully surprised they made you less likely to smoke. For me, smoking on opiates is a must.

It's not depression or lack of motivation that gets me when I try to abstain from cigarettes, it's the craving that dawns on me around 3 or 4 hours after my last cigarette that builds and builds until every thought and action revolves around getting a cigarette. I'm a bit unnerved, hoping that the cravings for cigarettes won't stay with me for the rest of my life much like cravings for opiates.

EDIT: I'm unfamiliar with Zyban's method of action. Chantix claims to have a 44% success rate versus 30% with Zyban.

I'm going to quit smoking and begin Chantix today- Sunday.
Me and this other guy at work are quitting with Chantix together.

You begin to take it for a week while continuing to smoke then stop the cigs. and take the stuff I think for 11 more weeks?

I will post how it goes.

I bought a 50 dollar box of nicotine gum and I haven't smoked for a week. I was up to a pack a day.

But now I think I'm addicted to the gum! 8(

lol.. the gum works fine but I have found myself chomping on 2 pieces at a time lately. Also I am getting cravings for a piece of gum every 5 minutes.

What the hell? So now I'm a gum addict? How is a person supposed to kick the gum?

Here is my experience beginning with this stuff. No biggie so far:
I didnt begin until Monday, 1/15/96:
Today is my 3rd day- so far, never got nauseus or had any other kind of side effect. Still smoking as usual- no change there.
Monday- 1 pill
Tuesday- 1 pill
Wednesday- 1 pill.

I'll keep updating on how this stuff is working.

my gf and I are quitting friday the 19th. We've been taking wellbutrin for a month and will continue to take it for another month after quitting. Two years ago we quit using Wellbutrin and it was suprisingly easy. Too bad we started back a year later. Hopefully this time it will stick. I also take opies and smoking is a must for me too. Moreso at higher doses. Good luck to everyone else. Nicotine is a bitch

its funny that i saw this thread...i was just saying to my friends today that i wanna try to quit...more of a personal thing than a serious need...im 20 and ive only been smoking for about 2 years. usually ill go through a pack in 2 days, maybe 3, depending on what im doing. i only had 4 today, none after 5 pm...which is crazy..maybe the first time ive done that in 2 years. so ill see if i can make the rest of my pack last a week...that would be like 2 a day...i just wanna see if i can do it.

bump

I'm on my third day 'No Smokes'. I think about it, but I gotta say, Welbutrin(Zyban) is pretty fucking awesome, as it decreases that horrible desire that always ruins any other attempt to quit.
How bout you other guys that were gonna quit?

^ Good job dude!

1 pill the rest of the week thru yesterday, Sat.
I didnt realize that 2 pills a day were supposed to be taken after the 3rd day so I am behind a little bit- about 3 days.
So far no side effects and no desire to stop smoking ....YET.
I'll keep updating.

OK. I had the post all written then somehow I copied the wrong thing.:X
So just few details now.
Bottom line? I became EXTREMELY depressed and was having suicidal thoughts about 1.5 weeks into it.8(
I stopped the pills and was fine about 1 day later. That sucks sucks with my mind.....
I'm going back to the patch.

Zyban didnt do shit for me. Neither did the patch, the gum or the inhaler.
Calamus root is the only thing that works for me to lower my tobacco intake with.

I talked to my doc yesterday about the issue I had with this stuff. NOT uncommon.

In fact, the side effects, if you have them, can go either way...WAY UP or WAY DOWN- you could be either way manic or way depressed. He said to cut the dose in 1/2. I will try it soon .:)

I'm thinking about quitting smoking. My main problem is when im drunk or am on opiate drugs i smoke like a train. I eat some perks and boom, im through 2 packs and going to buy another one. I normally smoke 1 pack, sometimes a pack and a half of my reds. So in about a week im going to take another nice break from opiates. At the same time im gona take a break from alcohol and attempt to quit smoking cigarettes. It'll be easy for the alcohol since i only drink here or there. The opiates i got some suboxone to get me through the 4-5 days that might suck if needed and it's sad but yeah the only thing im worried about is the cigarettes:o. So i'll let yas know how that goes within a month. To all yous that are trying to stop , i wish you guys all the luck and good job for taking the first step.

its a great pill if you want to quit. i switched from cigs to lozenges, the 4mg nicotine lozenges. i ended up getting hooked on them. my doc rxed me chantix. i took .5mgs day one, .5mgs BID for 3 days, then 1mg a day for 2 months. within a week on chantix all nicotine cravings were gone. its a nicotine receptor agonist, it works like suboxone i hear.

Zyban didn't work for me (YMMV it does work) but the inhaler did .. 3 months no smoking ... 15+ years smoking ... all down to what to do with your hands TBH.

Back to the inhaler again soon :)
