New graphic new cigarette warning labels may already be having the desired effect: Calls to a national smoker's quit line more than doubled the day they hit the media.

The warning labels won't appear on cigarettes until next year, but were unveiled to the media last week.

Calls to the national 1-800-QUIT-NOW smoking cessation line surpassed 4,800 that Tuesday and 3,200 the next day. A typical Tuesday or Wednesday in June sees about 2,000 calls.

Good. My friend has been smoking since he was like 11. Fucking disgusting habit, if you're going to smoke something, at least make it something that gets you high like bud.

^Oh yeah?
I think smoking bud is a fucking disgusting habit.
You have your rigth to ingest wha-eva you want, and i have mine

^ They have a right to put what they want in their bodies. People are physically dependent on nicotine from cigarettes, it's hardly their choice. Don't need to troll just because you disagree, this is a forum numbnuts, for people to discuss opinions and facts.

smoking cigarettes is a choice in ANY sense of the word.
given that i'm currently quitting (LOL we'll see how that goes i guess), these labels are useful to me, personally; i still abhor the idea of fucking w/ how they advertise their product tho
/i'm unsure if it's all of canada, but like 8yrs ago in montreal they had graphic labels. the concept was weird, but i did like the visual reminder. still smoke, so obviously didn't do much in my case..

We've had this in the UK for a couple of years now.

How dare you do something you enjoy, that I do not!

Yeah smokings bad, we know. It says on every single box. I Can't believe these pictures are having such an effect in the us of a. Almost as if when you read on the box 'smoking causes a slow and painful death' you guys have no idea what it means until BOOM a picture of a dead guys put next to it. :/

Sounds like somebody needs a cigarette.

I gotta agree with the Network here, though this may surprise some people.

I don't object to allowing people to smoke when the smoke does not interfere with other people's lives.
But I don't like going out to a public place and having to breathe smoke from other people.
I am allergic to tobacco smoke, and just being in a club with smokers gives me allergies and asthma for hours or days.
I would far prefer people to be shooting heroin, where I have the choice to shoot it or not, than smoking, where I have no choice, since I must continue breathing to live.
Some would counter: you have a choice. Leave.
But that is not a real choice, is it?
Should I have to leave all public places whenever a smoker wanders along?
That is simply unfair.

Once, I was listening to my portable stereo ("boombox") in public, with the volume quite low, as I try to respect the public space. A woman sat down next to me with a cigarette lit.
I turned the volume up all the way and pointed the boombox directly at her.
(This boombox could get really, really loud).
She asked me to turn it down, and I agreed to, as long as she stopped polluting my air.
She agreed, and put out her cig. I turned the volume quite low again.
We were both satisfied.
When someone in the public is offending others by engaging in an activity that risks public health, and that they could chose to engage in elsewhere, or to stop entirely, it is not fair.

My music was clearly hurting her ears, and her cig was hurting my eyes, throat, and lungs.
So we negotiated.
We both agreed that, since we needed to respect the public space, we would stop offending the other person.

It's like asking dog-owmers with violent dogs not to let their dogs off leash, where they might bother someone. If you can successfully keep your danger/poison away from me, please feel free to continue right on... But if it infringes on my life in a public space, you have no right to continue.

I don't mind designated smoking places in public, but when people walk or ride their bicycle/scooter with a lit cig, and I have to breathe in their smoke for long stretches as I pass their path, I find it unfair (and unhealthy, and, yes, disgusting).

I exercise more than any other person I know. I am trying to get healthier. So why should I have to choose between going to a park while dodging smoke or simply staying home?

Smoke yourself to death in your own home. I have no problem with that. (Though I would like you to pay for your own medical care.)
But keep it out of my world.

i've been waiting to see what these ads actually look like ! i'm a smoker but i try to avoid smoking around non smokers, or people in general in public, especially children. i always ask if someone minds and if they do it's not a big deal to me. i think that you can smoke wherever and whenever you want, but i also think you should be respectful of other people.

Life isn't fair slim, just because you have some medical condition doesn't mean everyone else has to change their lives for your convenience. If we ban smoking in parks because smoke sets off your asthma, should we also remove all plants that might bother asthmatics allergic to pollen from the park and turn it into a concrete, plastic and metal "designated outdoor recreation and relaxation area"? That would be what's fair. Get on medication to counter this, I'm pretty sure they make it.

I'm sorry if I'm being rude, but I used to live in an urban area, and they already made us smokers stand outside when it's 20 degrees out and snowing, or in horribly humid 80 degree wheather while it was raining, and now you're kicking us out of the park too? Take it like I take obese people who are taking up half of my seat on the bus, you just keep quite and deal with it. /rant off.

Let me say that I didn't feel that you were rude, Never Knows.

Actually, I didn't mean to say that it was all about me, or my allergies (I was not clear on this).
We have bushels of evidence that second-hand smoke causes various cancers and other diseases. It is basically about public health.

Just as I feel that I have the right to be protected from a meltdown at the neighborhood nuclear plant, I also have a right to clean water, food, and air.

^unless you see the dead guy, you won't know what "smoking causes a slow and painful death" means...

^ That's true, if your mentally ill, or can't read.

Are you being srs?

When you read 'smoking causes a slow and painful death' - Normal people deduce that if you smoke, you die a slow and painful death. Not hard.

I thought it would be all lollipops and sunshine. Isn't that why everyone else continues to smoke or is that just me? =D

if "you" and "Me" have the right to but "wha-eva" we want into our bodies then how come its illegal to put opiates and benzos and bud into my body??

Because we live in an age where your government and my government think that a democracy does not include the right to ingest whatever you want, even if you are a functioning, capable and educated adult who can accept responsibility for your actions.

I figure I'll share my views on the various sub-topics within this thread. I smoke cigarettes, but it takes me like 5 days to go through a pack. Some days I have more, some days less, and sometimes I go a few days without smoking at all. But enough with my background.

As far as the images go, I'm kinda surprised that they actually did anything. I mean, who the hell doesn't know that smoking is bad for you? I realize that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. I don't need a picture of fucked up lungs to get the point.

As far as the smoking in public thing goes, I believe that any private business should have the right to allow smoking on their property. If someone doesn't like second hand smoke, they can take their business elsewhere. There would be places that cater to smokers and other place that cater to non smokers. The same goes for the employees. If employees don't want second hand smoke, they are free to find a new job. If businesses that allow smoking have a hard time hiring people, they can offer higher wages or make the business a non smoking facility. The laws of supply and demand work perfectly fine, especially now that the harms of smoking are more understood.

As for smoking in outdoor public places, that should absolutely be allowed. Personally, I try to be considerate of others when I smoke. I try to stay away from people I don't know, and especially children. However, like anything else, some people are assholes. It's no different than if someone that smells like shit sits next to you on a bench. You don't have to be happy about it, but it shouldn't be illegal.
