she calls to me in whispers strange
offering promises and old wisdom
wild dreams I can't understand
but still I wish to hear
wish to know of their existence
electric rhythms drift through the air
my hair stands on end
from where the voice comes I do not know
its language is foreign
its sounds bizarre and inviting
I see now why Magellan sailed
why Columbus went west
and why the old tales still ring true
I'm tired of the old world
tired of the concrete
and though the unknown may be empty
though the nihilist with miserable logic sneers
still I'll listen
searching and seeking and grasping and gaping
my mouth open with awe and youthful wonder
the cynics say the world's in twilight
that all the distant lands are known
and that there's nothing there anyway
perhaps its true
it may be evening in the west
but though quiet, now
still the voice whispers
