Quick question

IF the 25g is all you have and NEED to dose it will work. It will also do more injury to your veins and is more likely to scar at the injection site. Your veins would appreiciate a 28 or 29 guage needle and the comfort of the smaller needles will be apparent .
 
29 gauge is better, true, but I've injected with 25 gauge before and it's not really that bad. If you're gonna make a habit of it, invest in some better needles, though.
 
so, I take it, an 18g is out of the question, huh?
dammit, I guess I can pierce with it (yes it's steril and I used to apprentice, so I know whats up with piercing)
dont wanna waste a perfectly good needle
so what the fuck are 18g used for anyways? intra muscular?

FOR EVERYONE THAT ISN'T A MORON:
The higher the number, the smaller the needle... a 30g is about as small as you can get (actually you can get smaller but not outside of a medical supply) .. so a 28 or 29g needle (most common) will be SMALLER then a 24g needle .. you can get away with using a 25g spike - it's not horribly difficult or painfull, and you're not likely to do much damage - STILL, it's a practice to avoid because it CAN damage a vein, you're also more likely to bruise badly and leave nasty marks ..
An 18g needle is used for whatever it may be needed for - perhaps not even for an injection, maybe just for transfering fluid from one vial or ampule to another... or use, for SC or IM use... or perhaps deep muscle shots (ie where you actually inject into a specific muscle).. 18g would really be considered too large for an IV injection (though it's still possible!)

so if 30g is smaller then why don't people recomend/use that instead of always recomending/using 28/29
 
30 gauge needles, being as thin as they are, tend to flex easily (compared to the larger needles). That brings thoughts to mind about it breaking off and a possible ER trip. It's never happened, but the idea that it might keeps me using 28 & 29ga. Also, experience suggests that thinner needles dull easily and have difficulty penetrating thicker skin. For me it's a comfort & confidence choice. I would suggest you try some and experience their feel & performance.
 
You wont break a 30g needle, don't worry, you would REALLY have to fuck up to accomplish that.. and yes, they do dull faster, which is a good thing because it FORCES you to actually get a new rig rather then use the same old one until the print is totally rubbed off the barrel of the rig.. or else you pull a junky and sharpen it on a matchbook (read: DON'T)

One reason to stick with 29gauge (I haven't tried 30/31) is that drawing up and injecting fluid into a 29g needle is fucking slow enough as it is. Not a big deal, but it's a minor annoyance.
 
zorn makes another point - but really, the best reason is, well, WHY would you want some 30g needle? I mean, there comes a point where you're small enough to inject without ANY FEELING AT ALL .. anything smaller then a 29g needle and you will have fluid too thick to be drawn up ..
