Hi

Today I did a cwe on 40 30/500 codeine/paracetamol tablets.

I've got a perfectly clear liquid but the volume is 700ml. Is it safe or have I used too much water? Will it contain lots of paracetamol?

Thanks in advance!

Apap solubility is about 14 mg/mL of room temp water, so you could have more than 10g of apap in your extraction. The most you can safely consume over the course of a day is 4g, and that number can be less if you drink alcohol or have pre-existing liver problems.

In the future, you can probably use less water

All you have to do is evaporate some of the water on a stove at low boil, when it?s down to 1/3 of the amount of water you have now cool it off again until you get APAP precipitating. Then filter once more.

That is 3-4 grams, over the course of the day, in divided doses, just in case that wasn?t clear; avoid taking more than 1.5-2g at once.

Next time try ~250ml or so

1.2 grams is a lot of codiene, you could try 5 or 10 less tablets, as codiene has some type of ceiling effect, it is primarily a prodrug for morphine, yet has it?s own side effects.

Thank You for using cold water extraction

Next time it should turn out better; even now you have still removed a lot of apap, so congrats.

won't heat kill the codeine?

Thought about Recommending that, however you would have to evaporate fairly slowly, at low heat, and maybe better to just leave this one alone. You can still get a decent amount of codiene(not sure you?re tolerance or typical dose) there are ways to alter apap solubility, better off just sticking with it if you did it properly, other than too much water

does this mean that if you only used 100ml of water in your CWE, the most APAP you would be consuming is 1400mg, which is well within the safe dose?

Yes, but only if your filter catches 100% of the insoluble apap. Generally, you should assume that your filter isn't perfect, because it probably isn't.

but if the final solution is 100% clear, that's an indication that you've filtered pretty much all the APAP out and it's almost certainly safe to consume?

with aspirin my solution is crystal clear, but with Ibuprofen it always leaves a cloudy solution, so it does vary even when using the same filters

Cloudiness could be any number of things since the pills also contain fillers, but a clear solution is a pretty good sign that you've filtered out most of the insoluble material including APAP.

Boiling water doesn't negatively effect the codeine at all.

For best results use about 1mL of water per 350 mg APAP
