Questions regarding the mixing of Heroin and antibiotics

Hi all,

Long time reader.. first time poster.. I used both search functions of the site to look for an answer to this and I was either barking up the wrong tree or there really wasnt an answer to my question..

So my doc gave me 5 days worth of antibiotics.. Zithromax to be exact.. will this have any interaction with my daily heroin use? I smoke about 0.2 grams a day (black tar.. its all we can find around here)..

doc also gave me promethazine with DM cough syrup.. so far the only thing has done is made me fall asleep lol..

What is the interaction of all of these together on a daily? Im truley sorry if this has been asked before.. I really searched all around for the passed 2 days here with no luck.

I don't know the answer to your question but I wanted to suggest a way you may be able to get some information.

This is what I would do if I were in your situation. Call a pharmacy and say:

"Hi, I just had an RX filled for Zithromax and I didn't use my regular pharmacy. I forgot to tell the new pharmacist that I take {OxyContin} daily for chronic pain. I wanted to be sure that the Zithromax won't interact with the {OxyContin}."

I used OxyContin as an example. I don't know what opiate is most similar to Heroine. I'm sure one of the uber smart Bluelighters can clue you in on that. So, first find out what opiate is most similar in structure to Heroine and than call a pharmacy.

I do know that on my OxyContin drug information insert it says that certain antibiotics, antifungals and HIV medication can significantly increase the blood plasma levels of Oxy. So, it is important that you make sure your not taking an antibiotic that will increase the strength of your heroine so that you avoid overdosing.

It is possible that it could increase the heroin concentration in your blood due to 3A4 enzyme inhibition (as zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic, it inhibits that enzyme.)

The extent to which this is a risk is unclear, I couldn't find anything in the literature about morphine/heroin interactions with macrolides, although apparantly the buprenorphine prescription insert does warn about 3A4 inhibitors.

Your best bet is to call a pharmacist and ask about your morphine interacting with it. Also, using a lower heroin dose would increase your safety.

("down" is what we call it) i was wondering how that went??? Did it effect how well ur antibiotics worked?? I just start taking antibiotics yesterday and need to know if the down will effect how they work. Please let me know

feedback (heroin/antibiotics)

Just wanted to let you guys know that I continued using heroin while on my antibiotics and it didnt effect a thing. Still be careful though because my meds were for my teeth and Im sure there is different reactions for every different kind of antibiotic
