Okay, say if I'm having codeine withdrawal, and had no access it - but needed something to stop the withdrawal, would say Tramadol stop the withdrawal even though it's not codeine but still an opoid?

Yes. But make sure you just use it to control the withdrawal, because tramadol is a whole other beast in terms of withdrawals. Codeine is mild, and short-acting. Tramadol is long-acting and also an SNRI.

^ that is true. Depending on how mild the withdrawals are you may be a good candidate for loperamide as it is extremely mild, OTC, and helps people stop withdrawals. I know it is strange taking that much of an anti diarrhea medication but a lot of people here swear by it. If you need to get by and have a low tolerance it can be a life saver.

This should have all you need on the subject: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/717682-Loperamide-(Imodium)-Megathread-v-2
