Just finished discussing drug legalisation and the committee headed by Richard Branson. Most people seem to support the idea of decriminalization of drugs except the conservatives although the conservatives seemed to agree there was a problem with the current system and swayed somewhat in favour of not locking up users.
All was ok until, unsurprisingly, Daily Mail columnist Melanie Phillips decided to rant on and on about the same old shit of drugs causing crime etc without letting anyone speak and thus closing the discussion on the topic; some of her "best moments" were saying harm reduction is half way to legalization and that Richard Branson has put a dangerous idea into the minds of the public (that idea being alternative thinking and challenging the status quo).... what a clueless old bat..

There is another chance to catch it on Sat 28 Jan 2012 01:30 on BBC 1 and Sun 29 Jan 2012 18:00 on BBC Parliament

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01bd4wg/ link to i player episode but it will not be available until Sunday evening (29th Jan) (the drug discussion starts about half way through, the topic before the topic on Iran and nuclear weapons)

I just found this commentary on Mel Phillips' outburst...

The appearance was well reported and the topic eventually made it onto the BBC's Question Time programme. After an audience member brought up the example of Portgual, Melanie Phillips blasted the example, citing several statistics condemning Portugal's decriminalisation policy, such as increased drug use and mortality rates.

So what can we say about the Portuguese example of drug decriminalisation?
