Benzos Question of tolerance

I'm taking 15mg of clorazepate (Tranxene) twice a day for anxiety. I've been taking this dose (30mg a day) for a year and have a definite tolerance to it.

I have a medical procedure coming up and was prescribed 10mg of Valium beforehand.

I'm wondering if this is the right dosage (ie. will it give me 'sedation' for the procedure) or should I talk to my doctor about the dosage since I have a tolerance... From what I've gathered, 10mg of diazepam is equal to 15mg of tranxene so I think it will be enough (basically equal to half of my daily dosage) but I was just curious if it will be effective at calming me enough for the procedure.

Thanks

I'm guessing they assume the person is benzo-naive when giving that dose.. so you should definitely tell your doc to make sure you're as sedated as he wants you to be.

No one can really tell you if it's enough for the procedure then. The amount of sedation needed differs depending on the procedure. If the doc knows about your benzo tolerance, and he gave you that dose anyway, then I'm guessing you should be okay.

Well I just basically want to know if it will have an effect to take the edge off as they say

He's assuming ill take my normal meds plus the valium an hour or so before the procedure.

I guess what I'm wondering is this:

15mg of clorazepate is equivalent to 10mg diazepam. Since I take 30mg of clorazepate a day (one pill twice a day), the pre-op valium is ~basically~ 50% of my daily benzo dose.

Is this enough to have a noticeable anxiolytic effect? The intent is to calm me enough so they can do a pretty psychologically upsetting procedure so it's not supposed to 'knock me out' or anything like that, just relieve my crazy anxiety around having this done to me.

I have been on and off benzos for nearly 20 years due to severe panic disorder. I have been through many procedures during this time due to a chronic back problem and they always ask me if I want some valium or xanax. It is never enough to give me any noticeable sedation but I am the type of person that cannot be sedated unless I am given something powerful like propofol. I am presently on 3-4mg of klonopin/day and 10mg of valium or 1mg of xanax is almost like taking a tic tac.

Hopefully, you let them know exactly what you are taking. I always did but they would never increase their dosage. They just assume it will be enough to help sedate you w/o realizing that since you have been on benzos for an extended period of time, it is going to have little effect on you. I always found valium to be a useless benzo.

It's hard to even guess without knowing the procedure that will be taking place... it would be helpful if you would share. They could be giving valium for anything ranging from a routine MRI all the up to some very invasive surgeries. A given dose of diazepam isn't equally appropriate for everything...
