The only machine that would be running linux would be the gateway one, the other 2 could run whatever you want them to run. The family and your machine would work just the same as they would if they were connected directly to the cable modem.
It's probably also possible to get a router capable of logging into the bigpond network, I know routers, but i don't know how. bigpond's set up. If it's similar to optus (also gotta login) then it's possible.
Having a third computer isn't that much of a bother usually. my gateway doesn't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse and lives in a wardrobe. you should never have to touch it.
