Curious: I have noticed a particular medicinal scent on various band-mates of mine. I have also smelled this same scent from time to time on people. It is VERY specific and has a sort of medicinal/rubbing alcohol - but not rubbing alcohol - scent to it. Would this be a scent someone emits after they've used heroin?

Also, in the movies there is often the stereotype of people using heroin and passing out, or looking disheveled and two steps away from homeless, but it seems that that is only reserved for very far gone drug addicts and that there are many functional drug addicts, or I guess, recreational users(?) in which you would not know. If someone is on heroin, would you necessarily be able to tell? Or can some act outwardly normal under it's influence?

Finally, I am assuming that if you shoot up this drug and you're not so far gone that you've blown out all of your veins, you would start by using veins no one can see, not the obvious one in your arm.. is this true and if so, would one's ankle be a popular choice?

Any help would be much appreciated! And I am not judging anyone, I would just like to know. Thanks!

When i was using I was able to hold down a job, scool, etc for 2 years and no one knew I was using heroin. When people are nodding out that means they took a pretty big dose, if you dont take as much you just feel a nice euphoric high without the obvious nodding.

Most if not all addicts start off as recreational users, with jobs, normal people, but as use goes on you start losing your life and end up homeless, etc.

You can use any vein on your body if you wanted, including your neck, leg, thigh, arm, foot, hand. Most people use their arms because it's a lot easier and theres nicer easier to hit veins. People start venturing off onto the foot, legs, neck etc when they blow out their arm veins and other easy veins to hit.. It takes awahile to blow your veins out. I used 2 same veins in my arms for over 3 years of daily IV use and they never collapsed. Never had to shoot anywhere besides my arms..

Hope that helped

I've never been called out for being high before, but some signs to look out for are pin point pupils, incessant scratching, and throwing up at random times. Regular users are hard to spot because they become adapted to functioning while high.

Using does not make you emit any smells, and it is very possible to use and still appear to lead a relatively normal life. As far as track marks go, as long as a new needle is used each time and spots are rotated, then marks are very hard to notice, and dissipate quickly. Not to mention that heroin can be snorted or smoked instead of injecting.
One of the tell tale signs are frequent and long bathroom trips, as well as mood swings, varying from extreme happiness and a sense of " peace with the world" to depression and flu like symptoms.

The most obvious sign that someone is on heroin is snake eyes. Their pupils shrink to the size of pinheads. I hear you can cover this up with some belladonna and an eye dropper.

I was at a job for a year using and no one knew.. people thought something was up towards the end of the year because I would go "home" on lunch breaks - really i was just going to score.

As mentioned before, you dont emit a smell haha thats funny..

Pinpoint pupils. but even then, still hard to notice.
I didnt always use a new needle each time cos i used to shoot up so much so i had a small track mark on either arm, but nobody ever noticed, they were very small.

When youre a regular user, youre more normal on heroin than not.. if they seem to sometimes have the flu like symptoms - runny nose, constant sneezing in the morning or something, then its completely gone by the afternoon (after using) then that could be a sign

Ever think the alcohol smell coming off of them is.... ya know, alcohol?

Are you seriouse?! Belladonna to cover up small pupils from heroin use?? Why would you use an acetylcholine-inhibitor ervery day to cover up your heroin use?! Prolonged use can cause blindness. This chemical is for EYE-Docs only.
HARM REDCTION!!

I also have to laugh that you thought them smelling like alchohal meant they did heroin... Alcohal is the obviouse and best answer here. But as stated above those are the signs to look for , small pupils, scratching alot even tho it never made me itch except for when I would smoke lower quality gear, and nodding out....

Droppin dimes? you mean ratting someone out? LOL I dont think this qualifies. If we told he/she "I aint saying shit I aint no snitch." He/she would just go look up the symtoms on google. You've been whatchin too many rap videos playa ;)

I have heard people say they had a distinct smell while detoxing, so i guess it could be possible. Maybe youre smelling some sort of deoderant all these people happen to use.

Your best bet to tell if someone is using opiates(i.e. heroin) is to see if there pupils are tiny.
Atleast thats what my GF used to tell if I was using again or not. Every time we saw each other she would stare me down like a goddamn eagle.

Even if your in a brightly lit area, your pupils dont ever get as small as they do after you do a nice shot of heroin.

Did you ever consider just asking them? Everyone has their own way of reacting to the drugs they ingest, and the universal signs of heroin use aren't always easy to spot and/or can be caused by other things (pupils shrink in bright light). You're just going to end up offending them or wasting your time - or both - by trying to play detective and figure this out on your own.

Just ask them in a non-judgmental way if they are using drugs. If they trust you, they will tell you.

And no, heroin use does not cause people to smell like alcohol. The obvious answer here is they are drinking (smell like alcohol, appear to be tired/sleepy, disheveled appearance).

I'm going to close this thread. We are in no place to be speculating about your friends and their drug use - or drinking habits.
