RECREATIONAL ADDERALL USERS: How much do you take to enjoy the effects? Do you take regular tabs or the XR caps and crush the beads? What effects have you found regular use of the drug does to your stimulant tolerance level, if any?

******************

THOSE ON ADDERALL BY PRESCRIPTION: How much do you take per day and are they tabs or XR? Do you take as prescribed or "cheat" sometimes?

I was prescribed 40 mg of Adderall XR twice per day (once at 7 am and once at 3 pm)...that's a total of 80 mg/day of XR. Sometimes I have to take more on busy days at work to maintain my attention level. I apparently have quite a stimulant tolerance!

I'm a big guy (6'-1" / 285 lbs)...but on 80 mg/day of XR, I think that I should be feeling it's effects more than I do. Often, I can't even tell if I've taken it.

I've only been on it for a month and am concerend about my tolerance (doc has already "upped" my dosage once - from 40 mg to 80 mg daily). I've dropped back to only taking it as prescribed (without exception) hoping that my tolerance level will drop back to where it was three weeks ago. I know stimulant tolerance is a bitch...any suggestions?

That is a hefty fucking dose. You're lucky. ;)

Well, crush em' up so they're not time-release. Try doing that with 40mg's. See what the buzz is like. When it's not being used slow release and instead made instant release by crushing them, you should feel a significant difference.

Graduate your dosage for recreational use. But your tolerance will go up quickly on this medical dosage, at least I've noticed it has for me (unfortunately) when I play around with Adderall.

I usually get the time-release XR's when I can find it (for some reason, Dexedrine seems easier to get on the illicit market) and crush up the beads and eat the powder. It effects me within about 20 minutes, not much different than snorting it -- I'd rather save my nose for coke. I only need about 10mg to get amped for work. Recreationally, I do about 20mg.

I've never been prescribed it for ADD, so I haven't really developed a tolerance. I'm particularly sensitive to the amphetamines and meth always seems too tweaky for me.

Do you think I should suggest to my doc that we give Dexedrine a try? He's very willing to take suggestions and work with me in controlling this condition (long-time friend of family, trusts me, etc)...so if that may be a better (and more enjoyable) med, maybe I should consider that.

Please note that my main objective is to effectively control ADD to be more effective at work and (if possible) try to maintain somewhat of that "energetic, it's-all-good" sensation that these meds can give you. That's the way I felt when I started Adderall (a short time ago - approx 3 weeks), but its effects have since diminished rapidly.

Dexedrine might set off some alarms with him. Especially at the dosage you're at.

Adderall already has dex in it, heres the breakdown:

Dextroamphetamine Saccharate
Amphetamine Aspartate
Dextroamphetamine Sulfate USP
Amphetamine Sulfate USP

It's just this odd designer, time-release ADD med. I don't like the mix, i find the amped-up feeling lasts longer and the buzz not long enough.

Recreationaly I do a lot more than most, but don't do that until you know your limits, and even you probably shouldn't. But remember: it's still not as strong as street meth so you can take a rather decent amount of perscription speed. What is 20 pills? Not even a quarter gram of actual ampehtamine salts.

^^^^^^^^
Thanks for that info! I suppose I'll just stick with good 'ol Adderall. He seemed as though he'd be willing to up my dosage once again if this doesn't do the trick (I'm know he usually prescribes Ritalin, but I know him well enough that I told him that I had tried Adderall before and that it did wonders for me).

My problem is that I did get pretty recreational about two weeks ago and started trying different dosages (maybe starting the day with 100 mg XR - I KNOW THAT'S A LOT) and then maybe 40-60 mg throughout the rest of the day -- I'm sure some days I did as much as 200 mg (I was VERY productive during that week, to say the least).

That went on for a week and may have caused some tolerance problems. I now have fewer left than I need to fill the time between now and my next visit...so I have to take them very sparingly...no recreational dosages for me now.

Being a new resident to Nashville does not help the situation either b/c I know NO ONE here (except those that I work with in my small office and are all over 50 yrs old) to help me find a hook-up on some extras to fill-in the gap...looks like I've gotta be level-headed for a while -- and I'm going to see Jimmy Buffett tomorrow -- DAMN it would be fun to be on about 100 mgs!

Have you considered non-stimulant ADD drugs, like atomoxetine and strattera? They dont' have the same tolerance issues. The MAOI selegiline has also been shown to be useful in treating ADD.

^^^
Is strattera an SSRI? I know that they were comming out with an SSRI-based ADD medication.

(if you're considering non-stimulants they've used Wellbutrin for people who haven't responded to stimulants...some folks don't. I think most don't know it because they just want the bottle of pharm crank every month...I know I do)=D

Nope, Stattera is its own kind of drug....both it and reboxetine are NARIs, meaning that they inhibit the reuptake of noradrenaline (=norepineprhine) selectively -- much like how SSRIs work on serotonin.

I'm not aware of there being an SSRI in development for ADD...it's fairly well established that ADD requires drugs that significantly affect norepinephrine and dopamine...although I have heard of SNRIs like Effexor being used, and the heterocylic Wellbutrin has been used as well.

I believe the SSRI is paxil.
That is what my doc put me on along with the ritalin.
Personally I hate it. I get to where I feel like I have to lay down or my legs are going to give out and that is after over a month on it!
I know it is used a lot with adults with ADD.

Paxil is a terrible SSRI to give someone with ADD! I think your dr must think you have another diagnosis/comorbid depression or anxiety. Paxil has never been commonly used for ADD as far as I know. And it's not a new drug either.

Ask for Desoxyn... kidding... anyways..

The only non stimulant ADD meds i've heard of are Strattera (newly approved) and Wellbutrin ... and i've heard mixed results on the effectiveness of the treatment.

As for playing around with your dose... you've got a large perscribed dose already so dont push it up too fast... just be careful, tolerance builds really damn fast, and once its there it doesnt go away easily.

Thanks for the input guys! I don't want to consider non-stimulant meds at this time...I need all the energy I can get...plus it helps with appetite suppression (my wife and I just joined a good, healthy weight-loss program and I naturally have the appetite of a horse...it has decreased quite a bit).

I'm supposed to check-in via telephone with my doc today and I'm going to ask to be switched to regular Adderall instead of Adderall XR (because of the difference in the price, of course)...I'm sure he won't have a problem with that. I bet I'll notice a significant difference!

I'll let you know.

anxiety mixed with the ADD, yes.
I never said it was a new drug, just that it is newly used for ADD, perhaps only ADD wuth with anxitety as well(like many adults don't get stressed without ADD, nevermind with) but just the same.
Wellbutrin is far from new

Adderall for me recreationally takes about 30 mg for me to feel anything and more than that for me to totally feel the goodness ;) Then again, I'm not prescribed it.

But shit...if I get that stuff and do it...I can pump out a paper like its nothing, that shit is great for school.

Can't speak about adderall, cause we don't have it in my country, but on the other hand methylphenidate, hmm I love it, more than coke (Argentina must be one of the few places in the world where ritalin is more expensive than coke), now my tolerance is way too up, and I'm using a snuff bullet, so 100-180mg in a 120 minutes lapse (always snorted, unless my nose is clogged) get me where I want to be, but without tolerance 40mg's of ritalin some bud and some coronas felt like heaven, especially the first times (we have crappy stimulants here, so don't start with the whole ritalin is for 5th graders speech, and personally I found much more potential in methylphenidate than in coke), I've did lots of combos with ritalin, lsd+ritalin has to be my favorite, but it's not a party combo, ritalin ain't a party drug, and I don't care too much for parties, though there are always exceptions.
btw, I've been getting cylert, modafinil and mazindol lately, they don't seem to be very popular in the states, cylert is ok, combined with boze ritalin (sometimes coke) and weed, but it doesn't even compares, I don't find recreation, or even alertness in modafinil (but I've been told I should take it with a ssri) and mazindol is an unpredictable anoretic, but if you have experiences with those input would be interesting.
