Hi people I wanna know what the most effective benzo would be to assist me in methadone detox??? I want the edge to be taken off and be able to sleep a full nite....I know xanax is short acting but I know valium is longer....Im assuming valium is better right?? How long does it take to get dependant on the benzos cuz i heard the detox from that is bad too. HELP PLEASE!!!

Hey tricomb maybe you can give me ur advice. I wanna use the benzos only when i need them and try not to over do it so I dont get hooked on those then.....but I know benzos can help me sleep and take away any anxiety associated from methadone detox....thoughts????

hey man your kinda hijacking this dudes thread. I know a lot of people who get RX'd benzodiazepines while they are detoxing from their maintenance drug, be it methadone or buprenorphine or what-have-you, but a lot of these people probably end up taking benzodiazepines long after they've finished detoxing.....

It's an extremely dangerous game to play. I am not at all opposed to using benzodiazepines SHORT TERM at higher doses to help alleviate a patient suffering through opioid detox, but it's really dangerous because a lot of doctors will keep prescribing you benzodiazepines even when your done getting off methadone, and by then, your brain has had plenty of time to rationalize/justify why you need to take benzodiazepines all the time, or come up with the idea that you've had an anxiety disorder all these years and now you really need the benzos, etc.

See what I'm getting at? Now back to the topic at hand plz. Feel free to make your own thread RaverrKyle420, so that you can get more personalized responses. In fact, I'll just go ahead and merge our posts over into a new thread.

As far as short vs. long acting, every patient reacts differently. For example, I would recommend that you ask about clonazepam because on paper it seems to be a very desirable benzodiazepine. However, my personal experiences with clonazepam make me thankful for the wide variety of benzodiazepines available, all with slight differences in properties, half-life, etc. My body processes clonazepam in a weird way, as if it were a placebo. I can't feel a damn thing from it.

But don't let my subjective experience influence your own decision. Ask your doctor what they think might be best for you, in terms of long vs short acting. I would highly recommend trying the long-acting ones (diazepam, clonazepam) first, from what I've seen in some patients, the shorter acting benzodiazepines tend to be more addicting, although this is my own personal observation, and I know plenty of people (who had no problem with shorter acting benzodiazepines) who ran into problems when they switched to longer-acting ones.

It's all about each person's individual body chemistry, so it's hard for us to say you should do this: _____________

Basically just be honest with your doctors, tell them your concerns about long-term dependency and that you only want to be on benzodiazepines for the duration of your detox (If you decide you want to use benzodiazepines at all during this time period) to avoid long-term dependency, basically trading opioid addiction for an even worse addiction, benzodiazepine addiction.

subjective yet widely common opinion alert

You think getting off methadone is hard? Piece of cake compared to getting off a benzodiazepine once your dependent.

Are you talking a slow medically supervised detox where they lower your dose something like 2.5-5 mg per week or do you mean jumping off a low dose after having used it for years? I know they will not help me sleep in full blown done W/D's but maybe some people they would help. In mild W/D's where you aren't so much physically sick but more uncomfortable with high anxiety then that's when benzos really help for the short term IMO. However I also never found benzos that addicting so I was lucky because that can be a big problem like Tri-Comb mentioned above.
