Info Question About Terminology (example A v example B)

I keep seeing threads here and there with the titles saying "Crackeads v. Tweakers". That is a horrible example, but the only way I could illustrate my question.

What does the v indicate? Is it as simple as versus!

Also, how do you hide the URL and link into a word?

For instance in my experience with HTML it would be <a href="http:///www.blahblahblah.com">BlahBlahBlah</a>

to hide the url you simply type the word within the link and then delete the letters that you do not want.

paste whole link > put your mouse cursor between the 'h' and the 't' in http > type the word you want and delete the unnecessary letters.

So with the V threads, "Xanax v Valium" is it just arguments for which one is better or something? I have horrible common sense, so I apologize if this seems beyond dumb.


for some reason I thought there was a feature that would insert the tags for you and all you had to do was paste URL and type in what you wanted the link to be. I was typing the code out to see if anyone knew what I meant, but it worked. For me it is less tedious than pasting and deleting the excess words.



**UPDATE: FIGURED IT OUT**
If interested all you do is type [ U R L="http://www.bluelight.org"]Blue Light[/URL] with no spaces except for the "title" if you choose. The result of that line with no spaces in it would be Blue Light

that was insignificant, but it kept bothering me. had to figure it out lol.

For anyone interested in how to use different tags here I just found this post by accident. All of it is good to read, but particularly the HTML tags (e.g. Spoiler alerts, NSFW, and such)

The next mod that sees this, please /closethread. I figured things out. The "v" indeed stands for version. I was informed that threads are typically closed if they reach 1000+ replies. So, the topic or what have you is carried on into a new incarnation.

example: say there's a post called What Are 4 Things You Learned Today? When the post is closed the OP (or whomever) can keep the activity going. It could look something along the lines of What 4 Things You Learned Today? v <anything?>. To my understanding the title following v is irrelevant, just an identifier.

looks like you go there in the end. in summary, a 'v' in a thread title usually stands for version. people used to formally number recurring threads v1.0, v2.0, etc but, particularly in scial forums and threads, people started using it more colorfully.

and to embed a link this:

gets you this:

click me for google
