I have been taking at least .5mg Xanax every day for 8 days (last night I took 2 mg for recreational purposes) now I want to stop but I've been reading about how rapidly benzo withdrawal comes about so here is my question: will I be okay if I stop cold-turkey? Or should I bother to gradually reduce dosage?

8 days isn't that long, and .5mg is a pretty small dose. Just stop using it and see how you feel. If you can't sleep or feel shitty, you can take 0.25mg for a day or two, but shouldn't be necessary.

You should be fine, don't make the mistake of psyching yourself into thinking you're dependent after only a week of consecutive use at a therapeutic dosage.

You should certainly stop while you're ahead, though.

Benzodiazepine tolerance does build rapidly, but there is a 'setting in' period. It can vary from person to person based on dosage, how often they re-dose and things like that. At a low dosage once per day for such a short period of time, I really don't think you are at much risk for any sort of withdrawals.

You can certainly take nAON's excellent dose-reduction advice. It won't hurt any if you do end up being uncomfortable, and it should ease your mind. See how you feel without it for a day, and go from there.
