Question about hydrocodone 7.5/500 prescription

I broke some bones in my hand earlier this week and was prescribed 50 7.5/500 Hydrocodone with the instructions to take 1 or 2 every 4 to 6 hr. Theoretically this could put me at 5 grams a day of acetaminophen. Today I took 3 shortly after waking up and 3 more a little over 6 later. I'm not that small. 6ft about 185lbs.

My question is , this would put me at 4.5 grams for the day. If I took it once again before bed. I know 4 grams is the 24 hr limit. I'm obviously not drinking alcohol while taking this. But do I have anything to worry about . I will only be taking these for a week or so till pain subsides.

The reason for taking 3 is that two numbs most of the pain. But 3 gets rid of it in its entirety.

Thanks in advance for any answers you guys can give me.

If you are really worried about your APAP intake, perform a CWE on your pills. That's about the only advice anyone here is going to be able to offer you, other than to take less vicodin. Exceeding the daily limit for APAP days in a row for a week isn't something I would recommend, but it could very well cause zero problems.

No one is going to be able to answer for sure if it is or isn't. A CWE is a very easy thing to do and will leave you with a relatively APAP free solution of hydrocodone.

I suggest you take them as prescribed, and don't add a single pill. Your only other option is to perform a cold water extraction (a simple process) in order to extract the hydrocodone.

Keep in mind that the '4,000' window is theoretical, since the amount paracetamol an individual can handle varies, it could be less for you, and it could be more. Either way, less would be less harmful. If you're in pain, then you have to try and resist because it's your liver at stake.

You should be fine since you're taking them for an acute injury which means short term. Long term this could possibly be a problem but yeah best to just take them as prescribed to be sure.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't take anymore last night. I smoked a bowl and paranoia got the best of me. So I just dealt with the pain.

Question about dosing. If I were to take 3. Would it be safer to take two as prescribed and wait 45 min or so to take the third as to not hit my liver with all the acetaminophen at once or does it really not matter. I am taking around 3grams a day currently. Which is less then if I went by the prescribed dose.

Reason I'm so paranoid is my mother suffered liver failure a few years back due to multiple medications she was on having acetaminophen in them. She took them for years before that happened. But still ended up in a coma for 2 weeks.

Maybe I'll try a cwe later today. Seems that there would be a loss of the hydrocodone in the process though?

Taking any drug with a maximum limit in doses as far apart as possible within the 12-16 hour period that you're awake is always the best thing to do. So yes, spacing out your dosing is much more gentle on your liver than taking them in one shot.

Thanks chromophobia, you guys rock with the quick answers.

I'm on my cell, didn't see a thumbs up option or anything that I could give. Did I miss it?

you will be fine. APAP poisoning comes about after chronic use of tylenol. Acute hepatitis from excess APAP is usually induced by a super fucking huge amount of apap, like 7500-10000mgs + apap in a day, or like 6000+ apap in a single dose. acute apap poisoning can also occur from alcohol + apap, but usually you still have to ingest wayy over the prescribed limit of apap and binge drinking. the lst way is if you already have liver issues...

other than those possibilites, you will be fine taking 4000-5000mg apap a day for 2-3 weeks, now there is a problem with chronic dosing of 4000+mg of APAP a day which is what the FDA is referring to about not exceeding that amount for extended use.

i have taken 7500mgs apap in a day, and i was fine. i also took 2000mg apap with 3 alcoholic drinks. however, about a year later i developed hepatitis, but to this day im not sure what caused my abnormal liver enzyme levels. could have been the kratom and kava i was indulging on, maybe the bupre, maybe it was in my jeans ( lol --> genes), but i do know that the day i took 7500mg apap certainly didnt help.

if you are worried, try doing a CWE. CWE's are simple and effective at removing 75% of the apap in your dose. try not to drink or take anything that might hurt your liver during this period, you will be fine. just dont make a habit out of it. you probably are only prescribed a 3-4 week supply anyway. drink loads of water and take vitamin C to aide you liver and to help take preventative action against APAP toxcicity.
