Opioids Question about Dilaudid withdrawal (Hydromorphone)

I'm currently coming off of a 20+ milligram a day habit. I began using again when my grandfather got sick. He only has maybe one or two days left. I want to be able to spend his last moments with him without vomiting and shitting every five minutes. I guess my question is: Would wearing a Fentanyl patch for 72 hours get me through the withdrawal or will it just delay the inevitable and leave me horribly sick when I remove the patch?

It's a 50mcg Mallinckrodt patch. You know, the weakest brand available for patches.


My grandpa has very little time left so any timely response would be extremely helpful.

It will delay withdrawal and leave you incredibly sick after taking it off. That's why opiate addiction is piss, cause when life matters they don't Givvafuck.

Do you think it will make any of the symptoms less severe as opposed to going cold turkey off of Dilaudid?
 
I don't know about hydromorphone dosages but I would use the patch. The effect from the patches gradually subside during the 2-3:rd day of wearing them so it's kind of like a very rapid taper. Defintely better than going cold turkey at least. You will still get sick when the effects wear off though.
 
You will still have to face withdrawal after you take the patch off, but it could get you through the lnext couple days with your gpa without being sick.
 
Has anyone here had experience with this exercise personally? I'm going to try the patch but I thought it would make the WD's slightly milder than cold turkey detox from Hydromorphone.

I was under the impression that if I wore the patch while the Dilaudid was leaving my body, it would alleviate some of the more crippling withdrawals.

Yes the fentanyl would alleviate the withdrawals from dilaudid but only temporarily.
No matter what you take to step off, once that drug leaves your system you're back to square one.
Sorry about your grandpa.
 
Yeah, getting a single suboxone will help you out quite a lot here if used in pieces to taper but no matter what you always have to withdraw.
 
Is this even a question to ask? Of course another opioid is gonna relieve withdrawal...I went into withdrawal from 16mg of Hydromorphone a day and a 50MCG/hour patch saved my rear end tell I could get my script filled. I personally hate Fentanyl patches, they go in and out and on the 3rd day it NEVER works and I get withdrawal but it WILL help...better than cold turkey thats for fucking sure!
 
Honestly man, trying to get a sub strip or a subutex would help you out alot more then a full MU agonist. Even just one 8mg pill/strip could be used in a rapid taper with some success. Yes, you will eventually go through withdrawal, but they will be a hell of alot more mild then a cold turkey withdrawal. And plus, the sub would be better to be on around ur grandfather then say fentynal would...but good luck man, i wish the best for you and your family.
 
if this was anyone other circumstance, Id tell you to ride it out, that you are already going thru (or at this point, 2 days later, gone thru) the worst of hydromorphone w/d. Id try to get a few subs myself -what if your grandpa makes it 4 days? that patch isnt going to help you then, and the viewing, and the funeral - going to be dopesick thru all of that? You also cant be high around family and friends.... Im sorry to hear about your grandpa, Travis.

IMO, and IME, it is not a good idea to try to "kick" when something like this come along....your best bet would be to cut down your dosage and deal with what you have to deal with, kicking and being in sickness doesnt help anyone and it will turn your brain into panic mode, not to mention that you will already be overly emotional due to being in WD.


the short answer to your question is that most likely it will keep physical illness at bay for a limited amount of time but dont count on your head being anywhere close to "clear" or "normal"



i understand you dont want to be fucked up and be by your granfathers side at his last moments but if you have the self control to only put on a fent patch you have the self control to cut your dosage in half for a few days and deal with your situation accordingly.
