Queensland the cannabis, cocaine state, according to Australian Crime Commission drug report
QUEENSLAND is fast emerging as the drug capital of Australia, driven by high demand for cocaine and cannabis.
Figures revealed yesterday in the Australian Crime Commission's Illicit Drug Data Report for 2010-11 have seen Queensland emerge as a major drug-producing state, with more than 23,000 people arrested for consuming and dealing drugs.
It was also revealed that Queensland leads the country in cannabis dealing and, for the first time on record, the state seized more cocaine than any other in 2010-11, with a combined haul of 401.9kg.
Most of this cocaine was seized by Customs officers in a record bust in October 2010 on a yacht from South America, which was stopped 800km off the Queensland coast.
The same period saw a total of 69,595 drug seizures across Australia, an increase of 43 per cent from a decade ago.
