Well to cut a long story short I was found stumbling around and shaking from an overdose and blacking out, you can just try to guess which one. Hadnt had it in a while and thought i could handle the old dosages.

A person I didnt know (security of a club) saw me ODing basically in public and forced me into a ambulance and i was rushed to hospital.

Now it is my understanding that police dont get called to the hospital and they happened to find the shit still on me. They called the police and first told me the cops wont be called. But since it was an illegal matter, they came in and charged me for minor possession.

This is really shit I thought because of all the people that do end up suffering damage or even death by not calling the ambulance because they fear police will get them in trouble. Well apparently the police and a nurse later on told me the police were waiting for me and they knew what drug it was (trying not to give much info away but trying to get an important message. Later on I heard a nurse say you should of dumped the stuff before you came to ER. But i had to chance to they found me basically unconscious and forced me to the hospital, the drug i was on was a downer.. and they injected me with valium while in the "peak" state, i found that pretty stupid.

Also I now have to pay $700 for the ambulance fee (to a public hospital) even though i didnt call it, how can someone calling up and reporting me and being forced in an ambulance make them charge me $700, a friend reckons I can maybe take it to court, and besides, I know they have to worry about health and well being but I would of been fine in half an hour.

This is really shit because there are currently ads running by the queensland health service to do with schoolies celebrations saying not to worry about police as we dont report any ODs and you should call 000 instantly if someone over drinks or is feeling unwell if they decided to experiement with street drugs.

What do you think?
 
I thought QLDers paid for the ambulance service through electricity bills?? I know I didn't get an ambulance bill when I got a trip to hospital.

Ambulance is a free service in Queensland since.... not sure, at least for the last 5 years.
 
...but then again the QLD health system hasn't been doing anything right lately it seems.

Well, I can think of at least one thing they are doing ok with....

Well since i cant drive legally i only have a nsw ID with an old address. i am currently moving around QLD looking for work, so means staying with friends.
but they told me a friend told them he called the ambulance, then i heard security called. theyre mixing their words up. i never asked for a call out, but is that still me paying the cost? what if i have a healthcare card for low income, but it was last issued in nsw.

i meet criterias for drug diversion but apparently it depends on the magistrate.

i told a lot of people this story, heroin addicts etc. G heads.. they all said they'd rather just see how a nod goes or a blow out goes now over calling 000 as they probably wouldnt be able to hide their drug stash's and QLD police have a habit of just searching the house anyway if this stuff is going on, they send plain clothed detectives.

Hey mate, sorry to hear about your ordeal.

Health care cards are issued by centrelink, a Federal body, so can be used Aus wide, regardless of where you were living when it was issued.

Also, health care cards *should* get you a reduced Ambulance rate, much as they will get many prescriptions more cheaply:

I haven't heard anything back from those I contacted about this, but I can say I'd doubt anyone contacted would think that this should be standard practice.
 
This isn't standard practice. Usually the cops are only called if you've been driving, or have assaulted someone. In which case they will come and a blood sample will be taken and drug screen performed. What you've experienced is very unusual, I would advise people to go to hospital if in doubt. Some of the staff may be a bit pissed because it's 'self induced' 'time wasting' etc but in the end they actually want to save your life. You must have had some bad luck.

I think that's a terrible lesson to take away from one experience.
 
I was out clubbing in the cross one night and had way to much alcohol whilst I was on a few pingers and passed out on the couch, the security called an ambulance and the next thing I remember was that I was on the hospital bed.

Anyway point to story is I had 4 pingers in my pocket and the nurses saw them in there and new they were in my pocket but the police didn't get involved at all which was lucky.

I got a bill for the ambulance but I just ignored it and 18 months on they haven't followed it up, so I think I got out of paying for the bill.
 
Are you sure, the government isnt the type to let things slide and a bad credit rateing can really fuck you over.

Not trying to be a dick but watching out for you, be careful. The government is more dangerous then drugs it is :P

yeah well, they added methylamphetamine to the list of drugs found on me lol, thinking maybew the judge wont give me drug diversion after being in court about 5 times in qld before (still no record). you can basically lie about anytihng if u make a lawyer (legal aid/duty colicitor) u want.. disabilities, complications in life, anything, say your kid just died to get a lighter sentence they dont seem to check anything. love the bigger qld courts how it's like an airport, you're waiting forr your name and which court to goto on a flight-like board

anyway, got off with drug dibversion, told em ive had my punishment waking up scared in hospital and will never do any drugs again blah blah need help, got drug diversion and a S10. (good behaviour)

they put down possession of GHB. Too bad police didn't look into federal laws where any amount of GHB anaalogues over one gram is a trafficking amount. and that i got drug diversion with a prior suppy indictable charge..

so im happy, and im not gonna blow out in public anymore, if ya going to blow out, do it at home, least you k now yoiull wake up in ya bed, or maybe the floor, but it wont end up with you being charged by police cos of shitty hospital staff.
 
there are a few things to take into account here, each state and territory have different legislative requirements and also there are a few different professions involved which may also mean that you have a few different professional codes of practice involved too.

in canberra the Australian federal police have a rule that police will not be called to a non fatal overdose............................unless the person is underage, deemed at risk to themself or carrying large amounts of substances.

if the hospital staff believe that you have nowhere safe to go, are homeless or at risk to yourself they may contact the police under the guise of duty of care. It is an old trick to make sure that someone s somewhat safe if the OD s is thought to be an attempt at self harm or suicide.

the ambulance thing is really shit, i have had a few clients stuck in this situation, the best thing to do is contact the service and tell them your on a centrelink card, or get centrelink to contact them on your behalf. talk to a centrelink social worker...its their role to work stuff like this out.

on the behalf of the people that made the call, its always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to circumstances like this, i have had a few AOD clients who now wish that an ambo was called so that the worse situation did not happen.

it might be a good idea to talk to your local legal service to find out what yor oprions are, if you have a community legal centre of a legal aid service you should qualify as you are on a centrelink pension.
