QLD Floods

Still waiting to get the go ahead to head up. Part of the problem is that we cant get through even if we wanted to.

May not be leaving till weekend or so by the sounds of it.

I went to South Bank again today, you couldn't explore very much as police and security had it closed down. It was obvious there was more extensive flooding there overnight, but most of the waters had receded below what they were yesterday on the streets. I might upload a couple of photos from today later.

We have been home and our house is safe. The water is up the street behind us and two streets down the road. We have no power so we'll stay away until the end of the weekend. The water won't go down for another 3-4 days. There isn't much that can be done until then really.

What do you mean "can't get through", Maz??

You can get from Sydney to at least the Gold Coast and I believe the outer suburbs of Brisbane.
I've heard a few different stories of people stranded on the side of the road etc but their have always been zig-zag routes available, longer routes since yesterday and direct routes open since this morning.
I've been tracking the road closure constantly since Tuesday as my parents have been trying to get home.

I understood the Pacific was closed and isnt there flooding just starting in Nth NSW?

Still no word but after hearing news last night it may be some time.

Estuaries in NSW from the border down:

Tweed

For those able to help out with the cleanup this weekend:

Brisbane Response Volunteer Taskforce Participant Fact Sheet

Volunteer Registration Forms

Who can volunteer?

* If you have cleaning equipment (e.g. broom, mop, buckets etc), and are physically able to handle strenuous work.
* Participants must be 14 or over. Young people aged 14-17 must have with proof of identification and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
* You MUST present a photo identification when you complete the registration form to participate, and have that photo id with you at all times to participate. Please present it politely if requested – remember many people have been through a lot recently, and it is normal for them to be more nervous or suspicious than usual.

How do I register?

* Arrive to register from 7am at any of the four volunteer assembly points listed below. (It is preferred that people car pool, get dropped off or use public transport where possible, to avoid congestion as parking cannot be guaranteed in some locations)
* Complete a registration form when you arrive, or to save time download the form from www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and complete prior to arriving. You must bring photo identification.

Clean-up assembly point locations and transport

* Doomben Racecourse, Hampden St, Ascot – Main entrance Gate 5.
* Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Melaleuca Drive, Boondall – follow signs to the main foyer.
* Macgregor State High Assembly Hall, parking at Eight Mile Plains bus station or Upper Mt Gravatt park n ride.
* Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha Rd.

How will I get to and from the clean-up points?

Brisbane Transport will provide shuttle buses to transport volunteers from the above locations to the worksites and return at the end of the shifts.

There will be 2 shifts on Saturday and Sunday; 7.30-11.30am and 1-4pm.

I'll upload some photos later of South Brisbane... it's just mud everywhere, and some trucks pumping water out of parking lots and basements. It's a huge mess, and parts of West End, including one side of Boundary Street, still is out of power. Luckily the Boundary pub still had power. :)

http://www.nearmap.com/ Has recent photographs of the flooding... The photographs aren't as good as Google but you can clearly see the floodwaters on the new photos...

Good news! Very glad to hear you guys have managed to avoid serious damage

I turned out okay. Watched the floods from Mowbray park, which ended up underwater hehe. East Brisbane came out fairly okay, unless you lived near the creek.

Heading out west next weekend after looking at the damage this week.... Sad stories all over.. but the vibe is good from most people :) Plenty of work ahead for us and we are looking foward to it :)

Well our services were not required. Bit dissapointed as I was looking forward to meeting some new people and helping those that have lost so much.

Im guessing the army was able to get things up and running again.

On a side note did anyone else raise an eyebrow at the Queensland premiers us and them speech during the crisis?

"As we weep for what we have lost, and as we grieve for family and friends and we confront the challenge that is before us, I want us to remember who we are," she told reporters.

"We are Queenslanders.

"We're the people that they breed tough, north of the border.

"We're the ones that they knock down, and we get up again."

Helllo.

You are Australians first and foremost.

And those people down here who you seem to have such dereision for are people who really give a damn and want to do anything for you.

It was the sotrt of speech you give a team behind closed doors at half time in a state of origin.

NOT the sort of thing you say to an entire nation.

lol I have the advantage of being a Queenslander living south of the border now, and while I secretly smiled at what she said, i do tend to agree with you, Maz. Considering there are at least a dozen fundraisers being organised down here (Melbourne) for QLD flood aid, when Victoria is facing it's greatest flooding in 200 years, I think that shows a pretty cool side of the old Mexicans. ;)

yeh bro, it was like point break all over again.

people robbin banks, lottin scammin honest folk and catchin waves man. livin' the aussie dream.
