Q: Typing, or longhand?

For the record, when I write poetry, I *always* use pencil and paper. I'm pretty big on scansion (I haven't done free verse in a long time), so the need for me to analyze and constantly rewrite lines makes pencils almost mandatory. For me.

Longhand- although typing is faster, it is something about the way my brain thinks when im writing. its fluid... i have time to piece everything together, so that my hand just doesnt stop. ive been writing long stories since i was little, and ive developed the skill of efortlessly putting whatever i need to down on paper as fast as i can

Generally I prefer writing longhand for a first draft, but I like to do subsequent drafts in Word.

In terms of longhand vs typing, for me they involve different ways of thinking, different techniques and processes. Typing / computer-assisted writing is more of a gathering process, an arranging process, involving collage and building blocks. Whereas longhand places more emphasis on a hunting / seeking process, where it's me in a cave with a torch, rope and a mirror. Different types of conjuring: adding disparate ingredients to a brew on the one hand, wild chanting and dancing on the other(!). Although there's no discrete division between them really, and both processes influence one another so long as I practise both - it's a matter of tendency, and intention.
