Q about shulgin / neurotoxicity

The negative effects of serotonin are mostly from the affects on the endocrine and hpa axis (aka stress response system). Some people have very robust stress responses and can handle A LOT. Others are more sensitive to stress
 
I don't think Sasha is "cooked" because of his exposure to drugs; more likely it has something to do with the multiple strokes he's had. And, of course, being old.

His great respect towards drugs, and knowledge of what he was doing undoubtedly aided it too.

Or is the brain more adaptable then we give it credit for?

Ask Phineas Gage, or any of the stroke, tumor, aneurysm, head trauma etc survivors who manage to leave relatively normal lives. The brain can deal with some serious damage and still recover.
