Purple Drank scheme allegedly made millions for smuggling ring.

Federal authorities say they have cracked a ring that banked at least $10 million and used its own renegade pharmacies to purchase 97,000 pints of prescription-strength cough syrup and smuggle them from California to Houston to make a deadly potion wildly popular in the hip-hop world.

The syrup used in "Purple Drank" goes for $300 to $600 a pint on the streets of Houston, and was enough to provide at least 1.5 million doses, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

"This is a big case, but I wish it was the only one," said Sarah Pullen, a spokeswoman for the DEA in Los Angeles. "It would definitely supply a lot of people."

Initially, I thought this story that involved the drink "Drank," the soda with Melatonin and other calming/sleep aid ingredients.

When will the DEA understand that people will continue to sell drugs if it makes them lots of money?

They probably understand it well, but as long as they get paid good money to stop it, why in the world would they?

weird. for once a big newspaper story has a lower drug price than what is normal. Maybe if you are purchasing huge wholesale amounts. Paid more than the lower estimate for an 8 last time I had some, and that was over two years ago. I know it has gone up since then.

Are we talking about codeine syrup? I can't believe people spend that much on codeine.. The only decent cough syrup in my opinion is Tussionex (time release hydrocodone) but those prices seem high for hydrocodone as well.

That is just as bad as $1/mg oxy

^ As it appears to me, the hip hop community looks down on pills more so than syrup. Not really logical, but whatever.

yes, that is for codeine syrup. I live in houston though, soooooooo ya know how that goes.

And as far as the "hip hop community being logical", well without getting racist I can't say much about that...

Aw man it's just a lil' drank!

Codeine doesn't do much for me as far as getting fucked up, but I find it very pleasant. Ridiculously expensive though usually. When the LAPD, HPD and DEA work together the results can never be good.

I may be wrong and I don't live in Houston, but from what I've seen it's not even just the "hip hop community" that uses it. A lot of people drink it like it's alcohol in Houston right? Or instead of alcohol in some cases I mean.

And a lot of these people definitely look down on pills. It's that so intelligent idea that if something is in liquid form and you can drink it, it's not really a drug. From what I've seen/read it's somewhat common for all types of people to use it in some areas. People drink it like it's nothing. A lot of them probably have no idea the relationship it has to oxys, etc. I remember seeing a documentary that had middle-aged/old black women drinking it and just relaxing. This was all in Houston by the way. So I can see how they made $10 million.

^To be fair, it's not completely illogical to use codeine/promethazine syrup whilst looking down on most pills. Syrup is much more mild then most prescription pain killers. The effects you get from sippin syrup feel subjectively closer to an alcohol or mild opium buzz then they do to railing 40 mg of oxy or something. It doesn't really make you nod or get you as high as most opiates.

Hell, in many countries codeine cough syrup is OTC.
