purifying cheap vodka to quality vodka?

i'm like 1 more convincing post/site from going and buying the brita. by monday you'll prolly have my results... by end of next week prolly have info on how flavoring it went as well (i'm contemplating the process of adding oil to it (thc), not sure on bioavailability issues yet/ flavor issues)

i like where you're going with that.... which issue was it in? w as it more elaborate than the link i provided?
it wasn't an article, just a blurb...so yeah, think that is all that was in the mag too.

here is a link from my favorite online recipe source, some more info on infusing.

http://allrecipes.com/advice/coll/christmas/articles/95P1.asp

between the brita filter and some infusing, you could make some great stuff!! easy and cheap too!!

If you want to do the bottling for friends, as xmas gifts, you can go to a wine and beer making site for supplies for things like bottles and labels.

def a good idea, thc issoluable in fat and alcohol!!!

but what an awful taste?? 8o Or can you not taste it? I have never had a drink made with weed....i would totally assume it would be a strong flavor...

that limoncello recipe on that link I gave looks reallly really good....

that's the whole thing... taste. i read a butane (i belive butane, don't anyone try this w/o being sure) extraction where you get 'hash oil', which will be a very small amount and very potent. would be a cool addition if you could get a moderately active amount of thc at the shot glass level, and if that didn't make it taste like ass.

also, i thought thc needed heat to be better bioavailable orally, which was why people use heat to make thc bu5tter. dunno much in that ar5ea tho.

the cooking in butter or milk needs to be done in hours, but the alcohol tinctures can soak for days....so that may be why it needs to be cooked for fat, but not alcohol...and that is why it takes days, and not only a few hours.

i am guessing.

i do know i have never read that weed tinctures need to be heated.

i was under the impression that the heat was why you made 'weed butta' instead of just making weed dust and mixing into the brownies. again, i am very ignorant in weed processing, so i'm sure i'm way off base. need to look into, as i dare not ask such basic questions in these boards haha. i am pretty sure i found something about making a very small amount of super potent oil. if that works well, and it doesn't taste too pungent, you could mix in enough so that after a few shots you were pretty stoned as well. that would be some crazy hooch. getting mad holiday ideas here haha

I think it needs heat for fat to work as a solvent, but alcohol is strong enough that it doesn't need heat to dissolve the THC?

that would be cool.

ne ways i just got back with a brita, a filter, and a bottle of cheap ass vodka. processing it this afternoon, taste testing tonight. (unfortunately i seldom get 'drunk', so i'm not sure if i'd catch a hangover from the unfiltered, so i won't be able to comment on much besides taste; however, the guy at the packy said that he knows it will pull out impurities that cause hangovers, but wasln't sure that it helped taste...)

well, the results are in.

i used McCormick brand vodka as my cheap bottle, and stoli as my control. I ran the McCormick through a brand new brita 6 times just to be sure, and put it in the freezer along with some unfiltered McCormick's and the stoli.

all taste tests done with raw shots, poured in different shot glasses by my gf (w/o me seeing, if i really need to state the obvious).

first test was unfiltered mccormick's vs. filtered. the filtration did make a difference, i easily distinguished which was filtered. so it definitely does make a difference on taste. i think someone here said it wouldn't. go test it if you don't believe, it is a notable difference.

second test was, naturally, the six-time filtered McCormicks v. Stoli. UNFORTUNATELY, stoli was the winner. i easily distinguished which was filtered mccormicks and which was stoli (i'm not avodka drinker, so this wasn't easily distinguished because i knew stoli's taste or anything).

so, it does get stuff out, but not as much as you'd like. I am considering attempting further filtration, but i must say that it definitely makes it drinkable. and a brita filter unit, w/ a filter in it already, cost me 14$ at walmart. i spent low 20's after my vodka and brita, which made plenty of human-grade vodka.

totally a worthwhile project, but don't expect grey goose. (i'm sure once i attempt infusing it with flavors it will be an even more worthwhile project)

So, would everyone who has tried this agree that charcoal/whatever Brita uses doesn't leech out alcohol, or at least a noticeable amount of alcohol?

This is a dumbass question, but if I'm trying to save money, I'd hate it if the alcohol content were decreasing...

no it doesn't take out the alcohol, i don't think.

thanks jazer! good to know it tastes much better.

and yeah, i am pretty sure it is just the lemon zest/peeling, just dont get the white part in it, it affects the taste and makes the vodka cloudy

lemon zest is actually used in many recipes

I tried this a while ago and my resullts were similar to jazer80's. Filtering did greatly improve the taste of cheap ass vodka, but I don't think it will be winning any awards. However, it is fine for a vodka tonic.

Also, filtering other spirits with a brita might not work quite as well, because while vodka is supposed to be an unflavored spirit (EtOH plus water), rum whiskey and gin have flavors which might be removed by filtration. It could still be an improvement though.

about the THC....the reason it's cooked in butter isn't to make it more active or bioavailable...that doesn't get changed

its a myth that heating it up makes it more bioavailable orally....it works just as good if you eat the raw buds

the biggest difference is: who the hell wants to eat a big ass load of buds....thc is thc, the reason butter is used (or milk) is that THC is NOT water soluble, it is FAT soluble. this means that fat products (and maybe things like alcohols or maybe ether, i dunno i'm sure there are many other things like hydrocarbon based solvents too, but most of these are pretty bad for you too) allow thc to dissolve in them, whereas water will not. this means that if you were to just heat up the pot in water and then drnk it as a tea, after straining it through liek, a coffee filter, would not be nearly as effective as if you were to make pot butter, filter it pretty good, and then use that to either eat or put on something or cook with. you'll get a much more effective high and use of the pot from the butter/milk methods

off topic:

in russia they sell rubbing alcohol mixed with water in bottles labeled as vodka..

very amusing and sometimes deadly, the way we russians like it.

instead of redistilling Georgi or whatever you used just save up for a nice bottle of stoli or something.. or mix it with some sweet syrup. vodka by itself is ...what's the word.

Jesus christ on a motor bike. who the fuck drinks that shit? that is insane.

canadiancheshirecat, yeah we did talk about that earlier, and pointed out it is't water soluable, need fat or alcohol.

I really thought, though, that heating the butter or milk, or whatever fat substance you use does in fact work better than without heating it.

VILE............................WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nobody has ever drank any IPA. Are you twisted, insane?
