purifying cheap vodka to quality vodka?

at a halloween party last night, somebody was telling me that his friends took cheap (read: 10$ handles) vodka and put it through a brita filter 3 times, and it tasted like high quality vodka.

any thoughts on this? if it is legit, does it only make it taste better, or does it also get out the stuff that gives you the crazy hangover that only cheap booze can?
 
puttin through a brita filter (water filter), wouldnt it just filter out impurities like bacteria?
i would of thought that better vodka came from better distillation or somethin?

anyone else?
 
alcohol is a waste given off by yeast through alcoholic fermentation. the yeast take the sugars, digest them and give off ethel alcohol as a waste, along with CO2. the longer its distilled, the more alcohol. filtering it wont do anything.

I have heard that the good stuff is carbon filtered. if that is the case, then perhaps this is perfectly valid.
 
^^ Yes, and that impurities such as methanol (less than .05% or so, of course, but still there) and some other esters may contribute to "hangover" the next day....
 
There's actually a product already out there that works on the same principle, it's called the Gray Kangaroo. I've been wondering if it actually worked, and reading that brita site sure makes it look promising.
 
yeah, i am actually quite glad I read this thread now. we will be trying it out, i'll let ya'll know if the taste is that much better. I am cheap, so I hate buying expensive vodka, but hate the taste of the cheap crap...maybe now I can finally start enjoying my good martinis more often :D
 
Yes I've have tried this and it does infact taste much much better. I love vodka but generally can't afford the expensive stuff so its worth the effort for me. Shit I'll still drink that crappy stuff if need be though.
 
any more insight as to whether or not it will ehlp the hangover? even if you can make it palatable, that's huge right there. damn, now i gg buy a brita
 
well jazer, it is possible (see post #9 and #10)

the brita pitcher uses activated carbon for it's cleansing, so in theory this should work for the hangover as well as the taste.

let's just all go get drunk and find out.

Anyway, Maxim magazine (or maybe it was stuff) did a test with water purifiers and vodka. They found one system that reportedly made cheap vodka taste better. It was in the issue about a month ago.

Yeah, how'd you know?

My friends never get their act together to take me out to buy liquor until all the places with licenses are closed, so I'm stuck with 42-proof shit. I cant complain more than a token/joking remark, since they are providing the ID, after all.

Do other states sell hard at liquor at like Meijers and Krogers? That would be heaven.

Because seriously, my old homebrew crap tasted better than a lot of this diluted junk. Not to mention that 42-proof is a little more expensive to a lot more expensive (depends on brand) than real 80-proof liquor, on the basis of alcohol content.

And lastly, you'd think at half the alcohol content, it'd be easier on your stomach. Nope. Hard liquor actually sits EASIER in my stomach.

it was maxim, i believe the brita worked the best on the cheap vodka. i recycle older issues to others so i don't got it anymore tho
