Pupils taking horse tranquilisers
By Sean Coughlan
BBC News education reporter, at the ATL conference

Children are not ready for work on Mondays
Teenagers living in rural areas are using horse tranquilisers as a drug, says a teacher.

Elizabeth Greed, who teaches in Wiltshire, says pupils are taking the drugs at weekends.

"The feeling is don't expect these pupils to be co-operative on Mondays or Tuesdays," she told the Association of Teachers and Lecturers' conference.

Mrs Greed - a teacher for 35 years - also condemned poor classroom behaviour as a "social disease".

'Side-effects'

Taking the horse tranquilisers produced "euphoria and an inability to concentrate" in youngsters, she told delegates in Torquay.

Ketamine, a powerful anaesthetic used in human and horse surgery, is becoming more popular among drug users, the advice service Drugscope told BBC News.

Its side-effects include numbness, vomiting and unconsciousness, causing a possibility of choking.

Ketamine is available only on prescription.

Social disease

Mrs Greed, 57, said parents were failing to instil a respect for teachers - and that schools often had to face parents "marching up to the school" over petty problems.

Many of these parents were afraid of being unpopular with their own children.

"It's a social disease. It's not just schools. It's a disease of a lack of respect. And that goes into every organisation and every institution."

She added: "I would challenge anyone to go into some of these secondary schools and cope with what we have to cope with. It's like sending us into the front line - and what can we do?"

Mrs Greed is clearly no shrinking violet. She told delegates that earlier in her career, she had disarmed a pupil who brought a Colt 45 to school and had also faced down a knife threat. An ATL survey shows 72% of secondary school teachers are considering leaving teaching because they are exhausted by "persistent disruptive behaviour".

A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said: "Violence will not be tolerated, and we fully back headteachers' tough decisions to remove or prosecute anyone - whether parent or pupil - who is behaving in an aggressive way.

"We have given heads a wide range of tools to tackle drugs through education, detection and deterrence, up to and including drugs testing for pupils and 'one-strike' permanent exclusion for dealing in drugs."

The conference later voted in favour of a resolution demanding ministers give them more protection against violent and disruptive pupils plus "explicit national standards of acceptable pupil behaviour".

The conference also backed calls for full "risk assessments" to be undertaken before pupils with a history of violence are allowed into schools.

what an unfair statement about ketamine. you're more likely to die from asphyxiation from alchohol than ketamine. and by prescription only???? show me the way to the doctors office!

uh oh! Looks like the start of the demonisation of Ketamine that will lead to it being made a controlled substance in the UK! :(

Couple of things:
I thought that Ketamine was, technically, a disassociative anaesthetic - not a tranquilliser?

Regarding the possibilty of choking, I also thought that Ketmaine didn't interfere with the gag-reflex. Or have I mis-understood the action of the gag-relex? (I thought it was to stop you chocking)

^^^
You're right. Ketamine is not a tranquilliser. It may knock you on your arse, but it isnt a tranquilliser.

There is a risk of choking, but only if you do a shitload of K, pass out and vomit whilst lying on your back. Kind of like how you can choke on your vomit if your drunk, sick, or just plain lazy.

Fuck I hate bullshit articles like this. How does ketamine relate to violence. The most violent I can get on ketamine is falling over.

When used in human or animal hospitals anaesthetists see ketamine as a relatively safe drug. There is a wide margin between the highest dosages used medically and a lethal dose, meaning deaths from Ketalar (in medicine) are rare.

At very high doses, ketamine behaves more like other anaesthetics and will 'switch off' parts of the brain and suppress breathing, perhaps even stopping it completely.

Very few deaths by pure overdose have been recorded (i.e. in the absence of other drugs, especially alcohol). Though outside of the medical setting, the main physical dangers stem much more from the context of use than the direct physical harms of the drug.

maybe he means they are more disassociated from reality than an average addict?

I don't know if that's true or not...but I'd like to hear his reasoning for that comment also

When they are fucked they are dissacoiated from reality, but when they arent fucked they are very much in touch with reality. Thats the problem.

sounds like K is not the real issue hear, its just some teacher (probly a bitch by the way it sounds) who cant control her students, or believes they are too disruptive and disrespectful (while I can understand the disruptiveness being a problem, why the fuck is it that people of authority feel they need to be 'respected') but I dont see any connection between this and weekend partying with ketamine

I don't understand that either. You can't ask to be respected. People either respect you for who you are or they don't.

The only teachers I truely respect are the true TEACHERS. The ones that stay after school and help kids, and go out of their way to help kids.

I understand that she wanted to be heard as a teacher, and linking classroom problems (loosely) to Ket has made the story worthy of BBC news.

But yeah, I agree that you can't command respect. If your class is playing up, you need to find a new way of teaching.

If I was a teacher with a couple of kids on Ket in the classroom, I'd just kick em out.

Whatever..

it makes it sound so scary people use horse tranquilizers
than it says ket is used in human medication as well

I knew this guy who smoked pot one time and went crazy and killed like 11 people.
