I have smoked bud in some shady places. down crowed streets during rush hour. Dont like to it. but sometimes im wit people who will just spark it up anywhere in a car.

public's awareness of the smell of pot

I don't know how privately set up your backyard is, but for a trained officer smelling pot burning on private property is cause to investigate-- especially if they see people they think are engaging in drug activity (i.e. passing around one burning cigarette amongst several people; seeing bongs, pipes, bubblers).
Smelling pot across the fence of a backyard is akin to looking over the fence and seeing a pile of bud sitting on a picnic table. And you'd better hope it's not a K-9 officer doing the rounds.

The park in my hood right up my straight, people always blaze blunts up there, everyone says its the safest place to smoke weed. Sometimes there will be kids and people up there but they generally don't say anything. Other than that I do it at my house, or on the city steps which could be risky if the cops blocked both ends of the steps, but I doubt they would, it would be easy to get out on some cops if you take the steps. The park also has many exits where there's holes in the fence, the cops can only come up one way in a car.

well using the smell of skunks to cover up bud smoke is out of the question, cos skunks don't even exist here in Oz haha.
Usually IF we do go sit in the park, it's only for one small spliff, that last less than 10 mins, and we might sit around for no more than an hour, then go upstairs to her appartment.
Usually though (98% of spliffs smoked), we do just roam the block to smoke the spliff, keep an eye out for people up ahead, and cross the road if we see any, or turn around or something.
otherwise we smoke out the window if we're being really lazy haha, but that's not fun and just awkward.

i personally think its just about opinion....most of the time the general public doesnt seem to care about it..or maybe theyre just not noticed, im not sure... but with more and more states legalizing it, whether it be completely or just medically, the understanding and awareness of pot has definitely increased

I live in south Florida. And a local cop once pulled me over, smelt pot, and just told me to go home. He knew I was up to no trouble.
I live in a shady area and cops around here are looking for people smoking in public and for harder drugs like coke and crack...even meth.
When dealing with calls on my street, I'm pretty sure they've smelled the weed coming from my back yard and they've never investigated. Then again, I'm never out front and I keep my front yard clean and organized. I also have a fence, and I know cops cannot open that fence to enter my backyard without a search warrant.

Discretion is one of the greatest powers afforded to police officers.
It's not about what they personally will do, it's about what they legally can do.
They sure enough can't breach the property lines, but if you have anything obviously illegal going on within your property (whether in your house or within curtilage of your house) that can be seen by simply looking over the fence or through the fence then they can definitely disrespect any property lines acting as an obstacle to their investigation of crime.
Well even with out a warrant, cops will probably bust in anyways. In my experience, inner cities have the more laid back cops, and townships have corrupt, arrogant, stuck up, power hungry cops. I live in a suburban town right now, and the cops are terrible. When I was 13 I had a high ranking officer cuss me out, tell me how much better he was and how low I was. I also have a friend who was breaking into a detectives car, the guy tazed my friend, who was a minor at the time, wich is against the law unless they are endangering you, then other cops came and beat the hell out of him. I was hiding in the bushes, watching the whole thing. At court the cops said if he didn't plead guilty to resisting arrest they would charge him with a bunch of other stuff, so he didn't take the chances and just took the plea.

why in the hell is the OP smoking in a park where there are people, especially children! eventually someone is gonna smell it and possibly call the cops. you shouldn't be smoking out in public, and thats why there ar so many marijuana arrests, stupid stuff like this. smoke it at home, privately, and you will NEVER have a problem like that.
but if you must smoke out in public, I would use a pinch hitter that looks like a cigarette, or one of those sneak a toke things that kind of looks like a car lighter. and then they sell these things that are the size of a tube of chapstick, and you exhale through it, and the smoke comes out the otherside smelling like whatever scent you bought. or you can make your own with a toilet paper roll and dryer sheets. (I've also used toilet paper with deoderant on them, for when I wasn't supposed to smoke in the house). but the toilet paper roll isn't really all that secretive in public. the cig pinch hitter and the tube of chapstick thing would be the best way to smoke in public and there'd be little to no smoke.
you can also use a pinch hitter, and I'd say pack it half way (if you cannot finish a fully packed pinch hit in one hit, because you want there to be no escaping smoke) and then if you hold it in for a real long time, when you blow out, there will be no smoke, so no smell.

But you couldnt get on the stand and say bullshit. Those cops could have got fucked for that shit. And your cousin would walk away clean. How do you feel now?

no option to smoke at home, apartment with no balcony.
also, when i say we smoke in the park around kids, we sit 50 meters away, as far away as we can (on the edge of the park usually)
also, this doesnt happen often, only done this once or twice maybe.

I am thinking now that this perhaps should have been posted in Australian forums, because i think there is difference in attitudes of the public and law enforcement and other things.
I reckon that the law enforcement can smell it easily, but the general public I'm not so sure about.
The majority of people don't smoke it regulary so i don't think they woul recognize the smell in passing. Seasoned smokers will though.
