Psytrance clubs....what's that all about then?

Anyone know of any nights anywhere in East Anglia? Not asking for anyone to spill any secrets, licensed venues are fine.

Psytrance was an interesting branch from techno all those years ago when it first came out. Personally i've never understood the constant stratification of music, particularly electronica, where people just want to hear one very narrow part of the genre for the entire night - all the tunes running at the same speed, with the same structure and using mostly the same sounds....but they do.

Psytrance appeals mostly to the new-age drug hippies that never got over going "travelling" in Thailand for Summer after they left school and came back with tie and died shirts and white dreads. They are utterly confused by some bland mix of "spiritualism", drugs and a shallow understanding of foreign cultures. So the psy nights tend to be full of them carping on about organic cannabis and reiki sessions. Fucking tedious. They think they're the most open-minded, chilled people on the planet but they hate anyone there who looks like they might have a job or believes in Western values.

The music echoes this vacuous faux mysticism with it's endless samples of some Nepalese bird chanting and embarrassingly earnest track titles like "Eastern Zodiac" or "Cosmic Tomorrow" or whatever.

The laughable irony is that far from being steeped in the culture of the Asian counties they "travel" to (not it's NOT a holiday apparently) what they actually do is to not pay much into the holiday economy by sleeping in the cheapest possible places and then build a massive sound system on the beach and play their own music and get wasted, much to the bemusement of the locals. To rub it in, they then usurp the religion and culture of the place and demeaningly use sacred terms for song titles to get wasted to.

Yeah I love psy trance me.

Actually Astral Projection did a few good tunes in the 90s.

Being a great producer and producing psytrance isn't too far from being a great artist and shitting on paper. Why not just paint a fucking painting?

Waste of talent.

And ur a fucking waste of space mate. Let's see what you got to offer...

Sorry, but have you ever been to a psytrance night? Your post makes me think otherwise. Most hippies I see at psytrance nights tend to be older hippies, rather than 'new-age' ones. Also, the only tie dye I ever encounter is decor on the walls - which to be honest is fucking fantastic to trip out too after a few tabs and I've no idea where your western values and Thailand bollocks has came from either.

Did it all go to mainstream for you or something...? I bet you knew about it first. ;) THE SCENES NOT THE SAME AND NEITHER ARE THE DRUGS!!1

Of course I've been. How do you think I know all about the new agers. I've been to quite a few. My girl was into the ex thai travellers scene for years and her old mates are still alt festival freaks. Some of them DJ at the parties and one of them is a member of a well known psy trance outfit. I've also been to Goa and partied. So I've been to enough of them and had the conversations.

I see you exhibit the customary lack of sense of humor of the psy trancers so I won't ask you if you've been!

it was quite a few years back when the scene had just started. I dare say it has a wider appeal now.

I used to go to things like Tribal Gathering and it was hippy central. Don't get me wrong - I'm only having a laugh. I've had some good times with these people. I just wished they'd get a fucking job and stop prattling on about global consciousness whilst spending my tax money on hopi ear candles! ;-)

^ Ha, nice :D

I used to go to a lot of the Birmingham "Psychedelic Trance Techno" parties in 94, 95ish, which evolved into Spacehopper, and Third Eye and others I can't remember...also went to a couple of TB's in that time....went abroad for a couple of years, and when I came back "trance" was just a pisspoor joke....

there's always been a fair share of wankers in any scene though really. But, yes, you're right, some of these "psy" people take themselves very seriously.

I don't really listen to psy trance any more but one album I do still put on, which is great stoner music, is Hallucinogen In Dub by Ott. It's Ott's slow-tempo dub remixes of Hallucinogen's classic album. There are a few very psychedelic dubs on there. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGcH0YDhwg4
