OK indulge me.

I've never been to a psytrance night (or at least not that I can remember :)) but keep hearing good things. I will be going to a small venue in the coming weeks and wonder what to expect really. From what I have built up in my head, they are frequented by a full spectrum of folks, from young to (ahem) old. Most of which enjoy their 'altered states' and bangin' tunes with a psychodelic twist to suit their 'enhanced' mood. In truth, that's what's attracted me there. I may be a mature vintage, but I'm fed up with this being made very apparent in a lot of the recent standard clubs I get to.

So am I right? Will most people be off their heads and in love with their chemicals and fellow heads, irrespective of their age? Or are they just a bunch of muso nerds? I don't mind the latter as long as most people are - off their heads and in love with their fellows irrespective of their age - as well =D

Please cast away your prejudices. Even if you don't like the music. A man needs to know the facts.

Ta muchly.

ive been to a couple and they are generally very bangin! wide range of ages, i think i would of been one of the youngest there one night, but seen some of the more old skool looking members still giving it rice on the floors which was good to see :)

and yes, EVERYONE tends to be off their head on chemicals and pumpin tunes!
just hope that it isnt a crap night but a good few mates sorts that problem out anyhow :)

theres a lot of haters but I like certain psy nights for the reasons you mention, everyone is very friendly and generally waay out of their boxes, also, like you mention, the crowd is of a much wider age range, you do tend to see a lot of older people (quite often hippies who aren't so much as into psy trance as they are into LSD and looking at the decor)

personally I'm not a huge fan of the music don't listen to it but can get into some of the full on psy so long as its interesting (and I'm fucked =D) some psy tracks just don't go anywhere and some are cheesy as fuck in a bad way, but all of it attracts the same crowd.. its very bouncy music and most of the people are very colorful :)

must say I see why it gets so much shit, there can be annoying hippie types who think psy is the only decent style of electronic music, chat balls about karma or other pretentious crap and tell you their trips are 278.5µg.. also I know people who have tried their best to enjoy the music but just find it all to similar and hate it, but that doesn't mean the night won't be fun

Cabbage in Leeds is the best one I have been too, at the westie, proper full on not pretentious and a lot of fun.. also theres always lots of acid and other decent drugs at psy nights, stuff you wouldn't find in such abundance at lots of others ;)

try listening to a bit see if you could dance to it, you don't want to go and just find it a psychedelic nightmare
.

very nice friendly crowds at psy party some of the happiest people ever with no attitue and lots of high quality drugs. not snobbish at all ime and one of the scenes with a very diverse crowd, you're guaranteed to see people up to their sixties having it :).

shame about the shit music

a lot of it is shit but dark psy seems to be OK. I actually got really into a dark psy mix the other night after too much mxe and ket, to the point where I couldn't not jig along.

some great stuff in there, or it seemed that way!

I am a bit bored of dubstep and the weird aggressive egotism which seems to be part of the scene. But the only up-for-it crowds where I am, at the moment, seem to be dubstep crowds. I just think I'd prefer the psy vibe.

I find the smaller psytrance nights i've been to in sheffield where the music is decent hard psytrance do indeed invite a much wider range of clientel than your average techno / dubstep night.

If you are 90 and you turn up in UV and a party on attitude you'll more likely get a standing ovation than shown the door, lets put it that way.

And yes, the psy often can be accurately taken as an abbreviation for psychedelic, with all the chemicals that entails.

Psy tends to be a bit sedate for me, so word about harder, faster, darker forms of the genre apeal. If it can't be fast, deep & dark will do nicely.

Peronally I like my music of the stomping HH, Hardtrance & NRG variety. But having said that, when these genre's have a psychedelic edge, I am happier still. The Harddance scene is very contracted these days, & Psy seems to be as big as ever, if not bigger, so although I havent been to a Psy night for quite some time, my options are becoming limited, even in London.

I may have to download that Dark-Psy mix for perusal! =D

Well that's just what I wanted to hear, thanks guys. Sure, some of the music I've heard is not my top choice, but some of it actually hits the spot perfectly. So much more of a night for me is about feeling relaxed and happy with my fellow party people.

This is all good, thanks.

I am old and trying to keep an open mind. God I sound pathetic.

The frightening thing is, I downloaded that mix I posted earlier and when I listen to it on my computer, the picture it shows is ME sitting in my computer chair. I never took that fucking picture! My laptop has become conscious.

Edit: bloody program was picking random pictures from hard drive! Deleted the bastard. Still don't know how it got there.

Not a big fan of psy-trance myself, but totally love the crowd and the vibe. At the psy-trance night I usually go to they a backdoor playing chilled breakbeat/eclectic stuff, serving tea, with a nice smoking area outside, love it ;)

Lol, Its unusual granted but has some kind of novelty charm appeal I guess, especially in the context as its been described.

A chill out back room playing eclectic music and smoking area outside. I can kind of see the appeal for some people.

I think I've worked it out. Psytrance is EDM with the sex removed! No wonder it appeals to me now my balls have shrivelled.

The vibe at many of the psy events I've been to felt like early/mid 90's raves i.e. underground, loved up, colorful, and full of diverse peeps dancing the night away.
