Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any information or experiences with different psychedelic and sedative herbs and if they could tell me which ones work the best. I'm trying to find certain herbs that are safe to take and that can be found in a regular health food store. I'm having a hard time finding out which ones are the best and safe to use, especially with all of the scammers online. Thanks in advance! (Is this kind of posting allowed in these forums? I'm really sorry if it's not!)

Papaver Somniferum is the best....But there are many herbs to use, but a lot of them have minimal effect, ie.

(SEDATING)
-Valerian
-Hops
-Passionflower
-Damiana
-Skullcap
-Lotus spp.
-Melissa/ Lemonbalm

OTHER:

- Kratom (opiate- addiictve)
-Salvia divinorum
-Wild dagga/ lionstail (stmulating)
-Pao D'Arco (healthy)
-Yerba Mate (stimulant- caffeine)
- Datura/Brugmansia (deleriant)
- Amanita muscaria (psychedelic/deleriant/sedative)
- San Pedro/Peruvian Torch (cactii- mescaline- psychedelic)

Theres hundreds more, Wld Lettuce from whch a opium like gum can be made, Zornia latfolia which is semi-hallucinogenic but nothing special....

Passionflower aka passiflora incarnata as mentioned by the swilster is good, relaxing in a really gentle way.
Most of the other ones I didn't find too interesting.

To list some that were sold around here though:
- Wild lettuce (opium lettuce, lactuca virosa)
- Valerian root, well known
- Catnip
- Damiana (good when smoked with cannabis!)

This thread just reminded me of something... was recently gifted a coupla ounces of Blue Lotus but hadn't gotten around to trying it. Just smoked up a bong or two and must admit I'm pleasantly surprised. It's listed as a sedative on Erowid and it certainly is but with a slightly trippy twang to it. Rather like nice, mellow weed laced with benzos and just a smidgeon of acid. Not usually a big fan of herbals but would have to give this one a bit of a recommendation :)

I don't know how many you will find in a regular health food shop - you need to be looking in a legal high shop.

And I think mushrooms are a lot safer than most of the herbs listed. The other thing mushrooms have in their favour is they work.

You won't find anything that will give you the desired psychoactive effects in any health food stores probably (extracts and the like are notoriously crap).

Kratom is by far my favorite as ethnobotanicals are concerned. A good dose is equivalent in every way to 20mg of hydrocodone for me (I'm opiate naive, and this is essential for really getting the most out of kratom). With a bit of marijuana, I get from kratom a rewarding if not-quite-psychedelic response.

Mulungu is excelent as an ethnobotanical sedative; its far more noticable than any other sedating herb besides kratom. Pedicularis densiflora and racemosa are a nice, relaxing smoke as well.

Mugwort is known as a "dream herb", and it also has some sedating qualities. I like to combine it with passionflower if I have trouble sleeping, or at the end of a trip to relax my body =)

Kava Kava isn't an herb, it's the root of a plant, but it has a relaxing and slightly stimulating quality to it, similar to alcohol but without the dis inhibition....although it's quite peppery tasting and difficult to drink.

Another recommendation for kratom - it's actually a tree, not a herb. But it's very nice indeed.

Other nice ethnobotanicals to go for: cacti, poppies & coffee!

Thanks for everyone's input! I have to see what I can find. For the valerian root, which is really common, how much needs to be taken to get a good sedative effect?

Must say I really was impressed with the Blue Lotus. Two bongs sent me off to nodsville and even a few hours kip. Felt really mellow then just couldn't stay awake and slept for 6 hours. Given I smoked it mid-afternoon and was fast asleep by 7PM ish that's quite impressive, I'd say. Apparently the buds in the middle of the flowers is the most potent and it certainly seemed to be. Well impressed for dried pretty lil blue flowers :)

Documentary with people sampling it for them selves here. Well worth a watch. As is the whole series - other episodes are on Salvia, Amanita and Henbane :)

I have tried blue lotus although we put it in wine, i read smoking it can dull the effects. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, my friends seemed let down but i really liked it.

It's Blue Lotus is all I know. Was a birthday present from my mother of all people. I was a tad tired to start off with but it really did knock me out - in a good way. Was kinda like being nice and chilled on benzos and smoking a nice mellow but surprisingly potent weed. Nice body buzz that was almost mildy opiatesque. Just chilled as fuck. Had had some GBL as well so maybe they have some kinda weird synergy. I liked it anyway but maybe it was just one of those one off things. Will try it on its own when not tired next time to get a better picture.

Planning to make some wine with it too - supposed to let it soak for a good few weeks in the fridge apparently and I'm kinda impatient so it'll be a struggle. Better be worthwhile :D

EDIT: This one. The flowers are still whole and pretty distinctive :)

Has anyone tried or heard reports about magnolia bark extract (main alkaloids honokiol and magnolol)? They are supposedly very good sedative ethnobotanicals (active at GABA-A receptor sites), but there is very little information available on them that I can find. It seems that the extracts just popped up not too long ago, from what I can gather...

^The extracts you are refering to have been very well received by most of those who have tried them (particularly honokiol) but I have yet to give them a go.
