Psychedelics and Sports: Can they propel athletes to unprecedented pinnacles of ability?

While scientific literature on athleticism and psychedelics is still in its embryonic stages, there’s a deep well of anecdotal evidence suggesting that psychedelics could bring athletes to new peaks of performance.

On the heels of sprawling cannabis legalization throughout North America, all eyes are hungrily hooked on the slow but certain legalization of psilocybin. No self-improvement trend has ever captivated every corner of the internet the way microdosing has.

The echoing accounts of those supplementing studious, sportive, and career-climbing endeavors with psychedelics have induced mania in the everymen. All groups, from existentially-exhausted mothers to weekend-warrior endurance athletes to university students, are eager to microdose their way to enhanced cognition.

Or, as Dr. Fey, a Western New York physical therapist and psychonaut, phrases it for Psychedelic Spotlight, “experimental success-seekers are using small amounts of psychedelics to propel them to unprecedented pinnacles of ability, and it’s working.”

Here we focus on a newly-researched niche: athletic performance and psychedelics.

A no-hitter on LSD

Where should we start? With the infamous, LSD-fueled no-hitter, of course.

The century-spanning chronicles of baseball are charged with oddities and accomplishments, but few are as iconic as when a 25-year-old right-handed starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates named Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter while tripping on LSD.

Dock Ellis recounted the drugged-out day in great detail to NPR before his death, and No Mas used the audio from the interview to create a fascinating short film. The story begins with Ellis partying with his friends the day before the game. The holy trinity –– alcohol, acid, and marijuana –– were involved. Ellis passed out and, upon waking up from his nap, took more acid, confusedly believing it was still the same day. He recalls thinking he was in the clear before a friend informed him that he had to pitch in just hours. So, he hopped on a plane and fulfilled his obligation with LSD lighting up his senses.

“I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire,” Ellis recounted in an interview years later. “And once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate.”

The film and story are incredibly entertaining, but like most tales that seem too fantastical to be true –– there’s just one lingering question: did it actually happen?
Well, that depends who you ask.

Bob Smizik, who covered the Pirates from 1972-77 for the Pittsburgh Press, is a believer. While he didn’t cover the game, he was the first writer to break the legend of the LSD no-hitter.

In the story, Smizik even included a quote from a Pittsburgh-area psychologist, Dr. Maurice Cerul, to lend the story a dash of credibility:

“If he had a good trip, he could have done his task without problems. As a matter of fact, he could have performed even better. It’s within the realm of possibility. But LSD should not be used to enhance one’s athletic ability.”

However, that quote was given decades ago, when psychedelic use was still a big no-no and counterculture activity. Now, researchers are abandoning their hesitancy to proclaim that using psychedelics to enhance athletic performance exists in a good or bad binary.

Psychedelics and Endurance Sports

When the topic of performance-enhancing drugs rears its head, the usual suspects—steroids, stimulants, etc.—are always mentioned. Psychedelics, meanwhile, are often overlooked.

Okay, fair enough, it seems like an easy assumption that psychedelic drugs aren’t performance-enhancing. But as James Oroc explained in his legendary essay, extreme sports and the underground psychedelic scene have a surprising decades-long relationship.

“According to the combined reports of 40 years of use by the extreme sports underground, LSD can increase your reflex time to lightning speed, improve your balance to the point of perfection, increase your concentration until you experience “tunnel vision”, and make you impervious to weakness or pain,” Oroc claims. “LSD’s effects in these regards are in fact legendary, universal, and without dispute.”

More recently, a citizen scientist wrote an extensive self-study for Borealism chronicling the effect of microdosing mushrooms on athletic performance. In his report, he claims, “psilocybin provokes a more immersed engagement with any activity; in this context, it amounted to a much more motivated sense of engagement with swimming and running as it displaced the perception of discomfort, pain, and fatigue.”

While he insists that there appears to be a performance-enhancing outcome, he acknowledges that it’s hard to know how much a placebo effect is in play.

“This [performance-enhancing] effect, as expected, is more psychological than physiological, though it will be argued that there is little need to differentiate between the mind and the body when it comes to improving sportive ability in this sort of context,” the researcher writes.

Moreover, the performance enhancement may only be relevant at the highest echelons of professional sport, where everyone is first-rate, and the difference between winning and losing is a game of millimeters or milliseconds.

Sports psychologist Stan Beecham explains, “The reality is not that [top athletes] think differently. It’s that they don’t think. It’s the absence of thought. It’s the absence of cognition. It’s the absence of emotion. That really is the advantage.”
While the evidence isn’t ironclad, it is accumulating.

With the potential of psilocybin legalization on the horizon, more robust research on psychedelics and exercise performance is promised. Dr. Fey is hopeful, telling Psychedelic Spotlight, “Soon, we’ll get a clearer picture of the broad effects of these psychedelics on performance. Sports have always explored the outer limits of human potential, and as athletes start reaching even higher levels of precision, they’ll search for whatever advantage they can get.”

But for now, urban legend and anecdotal evidence are enough to convince, or at least entertain, many.

I have done a number of trip reports mentioning psychedelics while running.

Anecdotally I have found that the most relevant factors for high performance are:

1. Sleep quality
2. BMI

I haven’t noticed any performance improvement on psychedelics to the extent I expected.

I have tried DOM, 2C-B and LSD for running. Generally, low doses can add sparkle, but not really improve performance.

I also noticed that the run itself would push any perceived psychedelic effects to the background. Making them less perceptible than the inner experience I would normally get while running.
 
Also, I tried 2c-b for weight training… low doses also, terrible idea. Was uncomfortable and unpleasant, not rewarding at all.

I have two more I want to try.

- Low doses of DOB
- Low doses of psilocybin

Not psychedelic but I have tried weight training on low dose 80mg MDMA and it was also unpleasant. I just wanted it to be over. But running was nice! Just probably not good for more than 30min to 1hr, unless reduced to a light jog.

Psychedelics and endurance sports: Increased energy and reduced fatigue?

One mechanism of action may be similar to taking amphetamines.

While anecdotal reports indicate psychedelics are useful in artistic and meditative pursuits, users have also reported them beneficial for physical activities dependent on alertness, awareness, and the rapid processing of sensory data — everything from climbing rock pitches to pitching in pro baseball, it seems.

But in recent years, accounts have surfaced on internet forums of psychedelics offering a different sort of benefit for exercise: increased energy and reduced fatigue during endurance sports like cycling and running.

While the scientific literature is lacking in empirical studies examining the effects of psychedelics on aerobic exercise, experts suggest there are several possible mechanisms — including the placebo effect — that may describe these users’ experiences.

What the experts are saying

In his comprehensive and widely cited 2016 overview of psychedelic science in the journal Pharmacological Reviews, researcher Dr. David Nichols of the University of North Carolina addresses the effects of psychedelics on brain function, sleep, time perception, and visual perception — but nothing related to endurance.

By email, Nichols confirmed he was unaware of any studies to date focused on this research question in humans. He did, however, suggest a potential mechanism for increased energy and stamina based on previous findings in animal models: dopamine.

“Locomotor activity in rodents is generally a product of increased activity in dopaminergic areas of the brain,” Nichols said.

"Psychedelics can turn off inhibitory GABA pathways that suppress dopaminergic tone. So dopaminergic activity is disinhibited, and the effect is similar to what happens if you take an amphetamine."

More generally, research in sports physiology has shown that perceived effort, fatigue, and energy levels — especially in endurance sports — are tightly metered and mediated by the brain. Performance isn’t as closely linked to purely physiological parameters such as VO2 max and lactate threshold as researchers once thought.

In his 2018 book Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance, journalist and author Alex Hutchinson argues that runners and cyclists are far more beholden to brain chemistry than they often acknowledge. For example, even elite athletes during serious competition have been shown to accelerate — not slow, as expected — toward the end of a race, suggesting they were subconsciously holding back until the effort was almost over.

Hutchinson cites the work of researchers like Romain Meeusen, a professor of human physiology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, who has shown that brain chemistry is involved in the regulation of fatigue during prolonged exercise — with the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine (mimicked by “classic” psychedelics and mescaline, respectively) both playing important roles.

“There’s no doubt that perception of effort is mediated by the brain, even though many of the inputs — temperature, heart rate, oxygen levels, and so on — are coming from elsewhere in the body,” Hutchinson wrote in an email. “And in endurance sports, if you can change perception of effort, you can change your performance. So the idea that psychedelics might boost performance isn’t totally outlandish.”

Meeusen’s team has tried — unsuccessfully, it seems — to improve physical performance during exercise through nutritional manipulation of neurotransmitter systems. But he hasn’t tested psychedelics yet, he acknowledged when contacted by Psychedelic Science Review.

Possible role of the DMN

There is a yet another potential mechanism more germane to psychedelics that could be involved, at least in theory. Extensive research has shown that activity in the default mode network (DMN) of the brain is reduced after ingestion or injection of psychedelic drugs. The DMN, as we now know, is associated with introspective and self-reflective thought. Additionally, activity in the DMN is often inversely correlated with that of nearby networks geared toward task completion.

If the DMN is tamped down by a psychedelic during exercise, and task-oriented networks amplified, could the result be an athlete who is less likely to dwell on discomfort or self-doubt and more likely to be laser-focused on the job at hand — all while being energized or at least distracted by a heightened sensory experience?

In her 2019 book The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage, author Kelly McGonigal notes that studies have shown that exercise (particularly in green spaces like parks) can reduce activity in the DMN, just like psychedelics.

“If you focus on what is unique about green exercise, the class of drugs it most closely resembles is the entheogen, a category that includes psilocybin, ayahuasca, and LSD,” McGonigal writes in her book. “Like green exercise, these drugs alter consciousness by temporarily reorganizing the default state.” So perhaps there is some synergy in play.

Is it the placebo effect?

Or could all this be the result of the placebo effect — more cynically, an imaginary phenomenon — engendered by some people’s desire to perform better, or at least to feel better, after taking a small dose of a psychedelic? Even given all the potential mechanisms seemingly available to explain away claims on internet message boards, Hutchinson wouldn’t rule that out. At least until some treadmill tests have been run.

“There’s a difference between saying something is theoretically possible and showing something is actually true. And to make that jump requires more than anecdotes and subjective impressions,” he writes. “So to me, until proven otherwise, psychedelics are in the same category as all the supplements and wearable gadgets that I get press releases about: it’s an interesting idea, but nothing more until proven otherwise.”

Microdosing LSD gives these world class athletes a solid advantage

Like a drop of liquid on a piece of paper, the trend of microdosing is spreading. It's seeping out of Silicon Valley tech campuses and college dorms into another aspect of life: athletics. Runners, swimmers, climbers and basketball players are reporting that they're microdosing their way to top performance.

Microdosing is when you take an amount of LSD, mushrooms or a research chemical too small to melt your consciousness or conjure giant snakes, but enough to improve your productivity, heighten creativity and make your brain work better, the way Ritalin or Prozac is supposed to but often doesn't. Because of this, it’s been called "the hot new business trip" by Rolling Stone and "the drug habit your boss is gonna love" by GQ.

Less noticed is the way microdosing is improving bodies. Athletes are saying that these highly-illegal drugs are their secret ingredient for better performance on the track, climbing routes or the yoga studio, improving concentration and endurance.

"People are talking about LSD microdosing as if it's a new health fad, like it's acai berries or goji berries," said Alex O'Bryan-Tear, scientific researcher and assistant to Amanda Feilding, the head of the Beckley Foundation, which studies psychedelic drugs.

Ask around. In the Boulder Rock Club not long ago, a world-class rock climber told me that one of his favorite things is to take LSD and climb. Helps him get into the flow. Helps quiet the mind. Helps him see the rock better. His eyes lit up as he talked about it.

At the Psychedelic Science 2017 Conference in Oakland last month, an amateur yogi told me that LSD helped him flow better. On the ground of a lecture hall, he demonstrated the ashtanga move that he said was impossible for him before he started doing yoga on acid. Somehow, the acid let him flow better.

Today's generation of drug users are often different from the ‘60s hippies; they're less likely to want to use high doses to scramble their brains, drop out or switch religions. Instead, they're looking to use smaller, smarter doses in the right situations, to live better, happier, healthier versions of the lives they're already living.

And at that same conference, a physician told me that he likes to dose small amounts of mushrooms and then go for long-distance runs. It helps quiet his mind, he said, and lets him get in the flow of the run.

Ryan Keating, a former college athlete in Salt Lake City, said that, "when microdosing LSD or psilocybin and playing sports, you are very much in the flow of your movement and feeling."

Mihály Csíkszentmihályi describes flow as "a state of immersion into the task at hand, when all the rest of life's worries — about grocery lists or annoying neighbors — drops away." Basketball and baseball players call it "the zone." Doc Ellis got there when he pitched his no-hitter on LSD.

Paul Austin @ The Third Wave who collects reports on microdosing, says athletes consistently report being in a flow state on these substances. Jim Fadiman, the world's leading expert on microdosing, who has collected more than 400 individual reports, said "many reported more skill in physical activities" and that "microdosing clearly increases (athletic) performance."

True believers are wildly enthusiastic. "LSD can increase your reflex time to lightning speed, improve your balance to the point of perfection, increase your concentration ...and make you impervious to weakness or pain," extreme athlete James Oroc wrote in the bulletin for MAPS.

LSD, mushrooms and research chemicals might not overtake anabolic steroids as the performance-enhancing drug of the next Olympiad. But it's already made a few lives better.​

Sports medicine and psychedelics

Sports medicine as a discipline is uniquely situated to safely explore, research, adopt, and implement novel and innovative strategies to meet the mental and physical demands of athletes and physically active populations. Significant advances have been made in sports science; including nutrition, training, injury management and prevention, sleep optimization, and health technologies. However, the stigma surrounding mental health and wellbeing in athletes remains pervasive.

Athletes encounter hundreds of distinct stressors making this population vulnerable to a spectrum of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, substance misuse, burnout, and interpersonal-relationship issues. The stressors encountered by athletic populations include: (1) performance and personal issues (i.e. injuries, finances, career transitions, etc.); (2) leadership and personnel issues (i.e. spectators, media, governing bodies, coaches, support staff, etc.); (3) logistic and environmental issues (i.e. travel, selection, accommodation, physical safety, etc.); and (4) cultural and team issues (i.e. teammates behaviour, goals, cultural norms, team support, etc.). A recent meta-analysis and systematic review identified that mental health symptoms and disorders are widely prevalent in athletes and maybe be higher in elite athletes compared to the general population.

The juxtaposition of sports medicine as a discipline, being uniquely innovative and committed to servicing the comprehensive needs of a vulnerable population with high demands, optimally situates it to critically explore and understand potential novel therapeutic interventions, particularly in regards to mental health and well-being. Moreover, sports medicine practitioners should be aware of advances and early research as it pertains to mental health, in order to conduct informed evidence-based discussions and recommendations with an increasingly knowledgeable patient population.

Psychoactive agents, defined as a ‘chemical substances that alter brain function resulting in alterations in mood, cognition, perception, behaviour, or consciousness’, are ubiquitous in the field of sports medicine. Stimulants, anxiolytic agents, and depressants are commonly used by athletes and prescribers to manage a multitude of conditions. A resurgence of attention is being placed on ‘psychedelics’ or ‘hallucinogens’, with early research suggesting a protective effect for the role of psychedelics in the management of a broad range of mental health disorders. Psychedelic agents are defined as substances that induce perceptual alterations, in addition to changes in mood, cognition, sense of self, and consciousness. Psychedelics can be categorized based on their (1) pharmacodynamics; (2) the subjective perceptual, psychological, and/or spiritual effect; and (3) the derived source material.

Emerging research has documented a protective role of psychedelics in the management of major depressive disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, cancer-related existential crisis, and substance (i.e. nicotine, alcohol, and narcotic) use disorders, particularly as an adjuvant to psychotherapy. These early studies have consistently called for further investigation; however, uniformly conclude that psychedelics appear to be effective in managing these conditions and are generally well tolerated in research settings.

Moreover, early studies have examined the impact of psychedelics on life-satisfaction and their ability to induce ‘mystical-type’ experiences in healthy populations and suggest that psychedelics have the ability to enhance life-satisfaction, subjective well-being, and induce mystical-type or so-called “quantum change/psychologically transformative” experiences. With the resurgence of interest in psychedelics, ongoing risk profiling of these substances must continue in both research and real-world settings.

The pharmacological, perceptual, and therapeutic effects that psychedelics induce depend upon: (1) preparation; (2) the type of psychedelic; (3) route of administration; (4) the dose (including macro- versus microdosing); (5) the set and (6) setting in which the drug is administered; and (7) integration following the experience (see infographic). The ‘set’ (referring to one’s mindset, mental state, and intention preceding and during the experience) and the ‘setting’ (referring to the physical and social environment in which the psychedelic experience is occurring) greatly influence the trajectory of the experience.

The majority of psychedelics enact their properties via serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonism (i.e. ‘serotonergic psychedelics’ or ‘classical psychedelics’) and include: psilocybin and psilocin (the active ingredients in psilocybin or “magic” mushrooms); N, N-dimethyltryptamine or ‘DMT’ (the active ingredient in Ayahuasca and Changa); 5-methoxy-DMT or ‘5-MeO-DMT’ (secreted from the parotoid glands of the Incilius Alvarius toad and certain plant-species); bufotenin or ‘5-HO-DMT’; and lysergic acid diethylamide or ‘LSD.’ Additional psychoactive agents can induce psychedelic experiences including NMDA receptor antagonists (i.e. ‘dissociatives’), amphetamine-derivates, and psychoactive-alkaloids.

Psychedelics are receiving increased research and media attention and have demonstrated early therapeutic benefit in managing a multitude of mental health conditions. Evidence suggests these tools should not be used or studied in isolation, but as an adjuvant to psychotherapeutic practices to support mental resilience, in additional emotional and experiential acceptance. Sports medicine practitioners should become aware of psychedelic agents and the developing field of research examining their role in the management of mental health and wellbeing. In the future, psychedelics may be an additional avenue to explore to manage not only mental health conditions in the athletic population, but also sport-specific stressors including burnout, retirement and life transitions, and sporting failure.

The Psychedelia of Running

There are two practices that have saved my life: running and psychedelics. In that order. I could write a book about psychedelics, and might. This essay is a love letter to running. It is a prayer of gratitude.

My early twenties were captive to a quiet desperation that took the form of compulsive, destructive relationships with alcohol and food. For years I couldn’t socialize without drinking, and I couldn’t drink without blacking out, awakening to the grim reality of the previous night’s horrors as related by my boyfriend through a light sheen of humor over deep disappointment.

Binge eating happened alone, accompanied by binge watching and binge masturbating. A furious cycle through various pleasure buzzers that kept me mostly safe from acknowledging the black sludge of self-loathing dripping through my chest and also totally quarantined from relaxation or joy. Despite the outward trappings of a privileged life in New York City with a talented, handsome boyfriend and a world class education, I lived in a muted bandwidth of sensation approximating but just adjacent to life.

I shamed myself for these behaviors even as I performed them over and over, trapped in a hopeless cycle of destruction and disgust that I thought simply amounted to my experience of life this time around. It was a devastating fall from the grace of an ecstatically creative childhood, which I tried to justify as the inevitable wage of adulthood even as I mourned it. I regarded “happy” and “successful” people as others, somehow blessed by the gods with an ease I was simply not to be allotted in this lifetime.

I started running after breaking up with said talented, handsome boyfriend. While we had come to the mutual realization that we weren’t making each other very happy, I was devastated by the dissolution of our shared universe and obsessively wounded by the speed with which he seemed to be moving on. Inconveniently, we had decided we were better off without each other about ten months into a year-long lease that neither of us could afford to break early, and several times in the final months of cohabitation, I fled the suffocating proximity of our one bedroom apartment for Central Park, where I would stand choke-crying on the butte of some glacial boulder, picnickers in the vicinity treating my publicly-private grief with the respectful apathy of any good New Yorker.

And then one time I just didn’t stop running. I found myself circling the reservoir again and again, running far longer than I ever had before in my life. In seeking to anesthetize the pain oozing through my chest, I had inadvertently run myself into the void of beinglessness. I came to, staring at the fountain, all breath and no feet, feeling as though I might have just run twenty miles and might run twenty more. I was a torrent of stillness and quiet. A vacuum. It was bliss. Turns out: the suffocating presence I was fleeing was not my actual boyfriend, but the boyfriend in my head with whom I had been carrying on a relationship at deafening decibels day and night as I played out my grievances and judgments over and over again. Physical exhaustion does wonders for hollowing the mind.

Until that moment in Central Park, I resented running. At my fancy middle school, prowess at PE on the track made of crushed Nike soles was just another meter stick for how breezy-how easy-how toned-how rich, and I did not register on any of the leaderboards. As a teenager and through college, “jogging” was a lashing that I thrust on myself regularly as atonement for my fat and lazy failures. Among the many games I played with myself like measuring my worth in the number chips I hoarded or the varying pressure of my underwear elastic against my belly, forcing myself to turn over angry red digits on the treadmill at my university’s windowless gym was a joyless ritual I both hoped and deeply doubted would finally transform me into the good version of myself. I resented the people who gazelled effortlessly at their stations and refused solidarity with those strugglers sweating nearby.

Somewhat in awe of the heartbreak magic that had unlocked a new kind of running, I decided to test it, signing up for a half marathon a few months later and telling everyone I knew so that I couldn’t back out without widespread embarrassment. I quickly discovered that after breaking the six mile barrier, there is little difference taking on eight, ten, thirteen miles. Once I decided I was going to run long distances, much of the work was done: I was a runner.

After all, there are many reasons not to run. Running in itself is not a series of pleasant sensations. It is often aching feet, jabbing pain in the torso, hot cotton lungs in humidity, fingers stiffened to claws in the cold. The reward of running is a long, slow relief, unlike most of the immediate but fleeting pleasure delivery systems I’d exhausted in the past.

If I let my mind have its way when I ran, it would riot with gripes and excuses, and sometimes simply pain: you can’t breathe! this isn’t fun! you can’t do this! Any pretext to end the sensation of discomfort, to convince me that I was not one of those chosen few who can, in fact, do it. When I decided I was a runner, I also decided I would not engage that voice. If it would say anything to make me stop, it was not to be trusted. I realized that listening to music was a bandaid that would mask the voice, but not make it cease, so I abandoned my headphones.

Learning to observe physical sensation without needing to have an opinion about it — good or bad — has freed my mind from associating pain or discomfort as a drama that is happening to me. I can choose to experience labored breathing as my breath massaging my body from the inside. I can experience my bones pounding the ground as a healing rhythm mirrored by my heart pulsing blood through my body. My ears are free to marvel at the wind rattling the trees and catch the hilarious snippets of commentary that roll off the wake of passing cyclists.

Ultimately this practice of disregarding my thoughts while running is a gift to my entire life. It is the same practice that can acknowledge without indulging the voice that cries woah woah this is not for you! when a psychedelic starts to tear me from my personhood, or hey hey your leg is definitely going to fall off if you don’t stand up! ten minutes into a two hour meditation. It’s the same practice that helps me navigate difficult conversations without exploding, to meet fear and anger with spaciousness and humor. If there is a gap in my resolve, those cries can rally to the most hellish scream of stop stop stop you are dying! But the less I listen, the less it protests. And in its place blossoms the most exquisite calm.

That first accidental run in Central Park became thousands of miles and several marathons. I anticipated agony or at the very least boredom in all the training hours required at longer distances, but instead I’ve been staggered by so much freedom and joy. I didn’t have these words in Central Park at the time, and I wouldn’t until drinking ayahuasca in the jungle a few years later, but running was the first time as an adult that I understood the infinite capacity within me to withstand and endure.

There was the time I got stung by wasps at the start of an 18 mile race that I still had to complete in order to qualify for a later marathon, and the December half I ran along the Brooklyn waterfront where gusts of wind lashed icy waves over the balustrade into our path. Enduring despite challenges is intoxicating. It becomes private superpower. The body is capable of so much more than we think.

So is the mind.

Running is psychedelic because it brings me to the present moment by force. When you are lost in the timelessness and placelessness of psychedelics, there is no one else who can show you the way, no one who knows more than you do. But dwelling in fear or worry or resentment on a long psychedelic trip is simply too exhausting. Too harrowing. Eventually, you have to lay it down. Running is the same. Neither experience makes room for anything but surrender. There is no where to go, no one to be, but present.

Learning to dwell in the moment — whatever it is, however uncomfortable or different than anticipated — has brought me into a peace that makes my life worth living. The present moment is infinitely unfolding, completely alive. It has become the only place I want to be, and magically, running and tripping have opened portals to that presence that do not close when the physiological experience ends. They have taught me that I can choose to be at home in any moment by taking responsibility for my experience of the world. I no longer meet new social situations with apprehension, no longer seek alcohol or food to escape the burden of being myself. Escape where? I’m still here. I might as well accept the gift of being me, make it an art form worthy of a lifetime.

At times I still struggle against both practices, fighting their demand to surrender. Of course there are days when I have to drag myself out the door, when I am too tired, too distracted, when I can’t remember the point of this excessive gauntlet in the first place. I make it to the park simply because this is what I do. I am a runner. And once I make it there, once I am in motion, once I am just breath, I am swept with gratitude. The only voice that resounds is a sigh: Oh, hello, it’s you. Welcome back.​

The current state of play surrounding pain management in professional sports

When it comes to the fast-paced world of professional sports, the issue of pain management is a significant one. This is particularly true for high-impact sports, such as football, where players are constantly getting physically battered out on the field. This has led to the increased need of pain management for these professional athletes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this has resulted in widespread overprescribing of opioids in the NFL, as described by former Ravens left tackle, Eugene Monroe. Given the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic, it is clear that the need for new pain management solutions extends to professional athletes as well. Interestingly enough, psychedelic drugs may be a novel solution in the treatment of difficult to manage pain.

Beyond opioids: Shifting the modern pain management paradigm

The risk for injury in professional sports is undoubtedly high and current pain management treatments, which rely heavily on opioids, are seriously falling short. Groundbreaking new clinical research has shown small amounts of LSD can reduce pain perception to a similar degree as opiates. Considering the safety profile of LSD is remarkably greater than that of opioids, these findings are instrumental in establishing a new, more successful paradigm for pain management. Additionally, the dissociative anesthetic ketamine has shown significant promise in the treatment of acute pain. In fact, researchers are starting to observe that patients who utilize ketamine for acute postoperative pain are significantly less likely to graduate to “chronic pain” afterwards–another dramatic discovery. When it comes to facilitating physical recovery for professional athletes, psychedelic medicine stands to make a major impact.

A radically different type of “performance enhancer”

When people think of performance enhancing drugs and professional sports, one may, for instance, envision the classic major league baseball player using steroids. However, while it may come as a surprise to many, the “hallucinatory” compounds known as psychedelics have played an integral role in sports culture as “performance enhancers”. For instance, on June 12th, 1970, Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis accomplished the seemingly impossible: he threw a no-hitter against the Padres high as a kite on lysergic acid diethylamide, otherwise known as LSD or “acid”. The celebrated MLB player went on to work in anti-drug programs in his hometown of Los Angeles–an admirable addition to this historic tale.

The history of LSD & extreme sports

As unbelievable as it may seem, many individuals have in fact accomplished extraordinary physical feats under the influence of psychedelic drugs. In particular, the secret history of LSD and extreme sports is surprisingly rich in tales of humans pulling off truly monumental achievements whilst tripping. In an insightful newsletter by (MAPS), humans under the influence of LSD are described as having scaled the greatest walls in Yosemite, heli-skied first descents off Alaskan peaks, competed in world-class snowboarding competitions, raced motocross bikes, surfed enormous Hawaiian waves, flown hang-gliders above 18,000 feet, and even climbed some of the biggest mountains in the world–all on LSD! Indeed, the MAPS newsletter goes on to state that patrons at any ski town bar will gladly regale many “fine tales” about sporting feats accomplished on psychedelics–truly remarkable. From the epic tales of Dock Ellis and his “acid-fuelled no-hitter” to the extreme sports players that perform while tripping, there certainly seems to be something uniquely “performance enhancing” about psychedelic drugs.

The benefits of microdosing for professional athletes

Outside of full-blown tripping while playing sports, there is also a very interesting and relevant point to be made about the potential benefits of microdosing for professional athletes. Considering the incredibly positive results reported by microdosing Silicon Valley techies in terms of focus, creativity and energy alone, it’s no surprise to think microdosing magic mushrooms or LSD could stand to seriously benefit athletes. Indeed, as discussed earlier in this piece, new research has shown microdosing LSD can be effective to manage pain as well. Furthermore, the ability of drugs like magic mushrooms and LSD to induce neuroplastic changes at their full doses, bodes well for potential therapeutic mechanisms at microdose levels. Given the level of physical trauma many athletes subject their body to, such medicines could be instrumental in facilitating their recovery off the field in addition to enhancing their performance on it.

Looking ahead to the intersection between psychedelics & professional sports

As the psychedelic renaissance continues to unravel the myriad therapeutic benefits of this powerful medicine, it’s impact on various facets of mainstream culture are undeniably fascinating. In the world of professional sports, psychedelics have and likely continue to play a significant role. Furthermore, the revival of psychedelic science stands to greatly benefit professional athletes in their recovery and maintaining good health even after they’re no longer still professionally playing. As the cultural stigma around these drugs continues to dissolve, it is quite likely more riveting tales of psychedelics will be offered up by sports icons of our time.

Psychedelics and Surfing

If asked to conjure up a mental image of a surfer there are plenty of stereotypes to draw on like long hair, maybe lives in a van and smokes weed. Like most stereotypes, this view is myopic and surfing has evolved from a fringe counterculture activity to a sport worthy of a place in the Olympics. The lore surrounding catching waves and enjoying psychoactive substances is not unfounded as the roots of surf culture lie in the narrative of hopping fences and giving the finger to the establishment. As more research points towards the potential medicinal benefits, the stigma surrounding plant medicines lightens enough for all people — including surfers — to explore the benefits of psychedelics. So, are there advantages in combining psychedelics and surfing, specifically? Let’s get into it below.

History of surfing

Surfing originated in the tropical oceans of Polynesia hundreds of years before it appeared in the colonial writings of William Anderson in 1777. What started as riding waves on canoes got honed over generations until the northernmost Polynesian islands — the Hawaiian islands — crafted finless wooden slabs reminiscent of today’s surfboards. The earliest Hawaiian surfers were after more than the thrill of getting barrelled as surfing held spiritual significance. Ceremonial rules governed every aspect of surfing, from deciding what tree to make boards from and praying to the gods for waves and protection.

Another fixture of Polynesian religious practices was the consumption of kava root. Thought to be brought over from the ancestral homelands by the gods, kava was a sacred part of Hawaiian religious ceremonies. At first, only community members of high social standing were permitted to consume it but kava root tea quickly became a commonplace beverage for all members of Hawaiian society. Apart from helping connect the drinker to the divine, the tea enhanced mental clarity, relaxation and focus.

Upon their arrival to the islands in 1820, white missionaries demonized Hawaiian spiritual practices, including surfing. Bringing with them disease and chaos, colonists decimated the Hawaiian population over the following decades, overthrowing Queen Lili’uokalani in 1893 and leading to the United States annexation of Hawaii in 1898.

The loss of independence was a horrific blow to the Hawaiian people, commencing a native-led revival of surfing in the following years. This revival was unfortunately co-opted by colonizers like Alexander Hume Ford. A former South Carolinian, Ford saw this surfing revival as a way to draw tourists and potential settlers to the islands. He promoted the activity to white American and Australian audiences and made a lasting impact on the surf world.

The surge in surfing inspired Hawaiian-born George Freeth to take up the sport and bring surfing demonstrations to the beaches of Southern California. Not long after, swimmer Duke Kahanamoku wowed the people of Australia and New Zealand with his surfing whilst competing in the 1914 Olympics. Leaving behind its roots in Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, surfing was now a growing industry in California and Australia.

Surfing in the 60s

In 1961, the United States Surfing Association was founded as the first professional surfing organization. Surfing at the time was flush with psychedelics. The Brotherhood of Eternal Love — a group of surfers producing and distributing the iconic Orange Sunshine acid — dosed the entire Southern California area and helped establish the connection between surfing and psychedelics. At the time, surfing was associated with the hippie movements occurring throughout California and therefore the reputations of debauchery associated with the long-haired dropouts.

Timothy Leary spoke of the connections between acid trips and the meditative experience of surfing. A surfer himself, he believed the merging of brain, body and nature in the ocean was the perfect vehicle to tune into the interconnectedness of the universe. By tapping into the rhythms of the ocean and flowing along with energy that has traveled thousands of miles, surfers are able to connect with the natural world and achieve an altered consciousness not unlike a psychedelic trip.

Surfing in the 70s

The 1970s brought about a shift in surf culture. Where most shapers relied on the tried and true longboards of earlier decades, the 1970s brought about the desire for shorter, high-performance surfboards. The high-performance shapes allowed short boarders to cut back across the face of the wave, whipping their boards from horizontal to vertical in ways unattainable on a ten-foot longboard.

The ‘70s marked the beginnings of the War on Drugs and the public opinion of psychedelic use shifted towards fear and penalization. For surfers, this did not help their reputation amongst more conservative communities. The stigmatization of surfers as lazy non-contributors influenced the rise of localism during this time. Especially in lower-income areas, surfers pushed back against outsiders and leaned into the rebellion and freedom that came along with the popular conceptions of surfing. No longer the free-loving hippies of the ‘60s, surfers worked to legitimize their craft as a sport. In 1976 the World Surf League was formed.

The 1970s music culture of “sex, drugs and rock and roll” also affected the surfing world. Substance use grew as more young professional surfers joined the competition circuit. The stress that comes along with money, fame and notoriety can be a risk factor for substance abuse and the surfing community did not escape the tragedies of death and loss.

Modern surfing and psychedelics

Over the following decades, the surfing industry grew into the 20 billion dollar industry it is today. Surfing’s reputation as a worthy and healthful pastime took time to free itself from the misconceptions and truths of its history. Prominent voices in the surfing community push back against the idea that surfing equates to substance use. Respected members of the surf community like Dan Malloy, Rob Machado and Bethany Hamilton speak of the dangers of drug use. However, as the conversation around plant medicine shifts, so do the attitudes surrounding psychedelics.

Kelly Slater, arguably the greatest surfer of all time, spoke out against drug use of any kind during his rise to fame in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Notably telling reporters about wanting to beat someone up who offered him a tab of acid when he was a teenager. Today he sings a different tune, testifying that plant medicines, specifically, ayahuasca have changed his life and allowed him to heal past emotional wounds.

New research points to the connections between LSD and high-adrenaline action sports. The rebellious connotation of extreme outdoor sports allows for more leniency surrounding other “risky” behavior. This could explain the connection between psychedelic use in board sports, mountain biking and climbing. While on LSD, researchers have found evidence for increased reaction time, improved balance and strengthened endurance — all helpful tools for an action sport.

Do psychedelics and surfing go together?

Both psychedelics and surfing mean different things to different people. Surfing is an individual sport. Though community exists, it is up to each surfer to define their relationship with an activity much more nuanced than sitting on a board in the ocean. What type of board do they prefer? What type of waves? What type of feeling are they searching for?

Psychedelic experiences are also individual explorations of shifted perception and consciousness. People react differently and get various things out of their psychedelic experiences. For better or worse, surfing and psychedelics seem to remain intertwined as the cultural dialogue continues to change. Even traditional practices find their way into the modern surf world. During the opening ceremonies of the Volcom Fiji Pro in 2012, all competitors took part in traditional kava practices alongside their Polynesian hosts. Recognizing and respecting history promotes progress. As for psychedelics, they haven’t seen their last days in the water.​

Psychedelics and Extreme Sports

According to the legends of this tight-knit underground, many incredible feats having been accomplished by modern extreme-athletes while under the influence of psychedelics. LSD can increase your reflex time to lightning speed, improve your balance to the point of perfection, increase your concentration...and make you impervious to weakness or pain.

For those unfamiliar with the effects of psychedelics, the title of this article may seem like a contradiction – for what connection could there possibly be between these psychedelic compounds and extreme sports? Based on the tangled reputation that LSD has had since the mid-1960’s it would seem impossible to believe that various experienced individuals have climbed some of the hardest big walls in Yosemite, heli-skied first descents off Alaskan peaks, competed in world-class snowboarding competitions, raced motocross bikes, surfed enormous Hawaiian waves, flown hang-gliders above 18,000 feet, or climbed remote peaks in the Rockies, the Alps, the Andes, and even above 8000 meters in the Himalayas – all while under the influence of LSD.

However, in the underground culture of extreme sports, the use of LSD or psilocybin while skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, surfing, skateboarding, etc., is in fact common throughout North American ski and sports towns, where they enjoy an almost sacred reputation. According to the legends of this tight-knit underground, many incredible feats having been accomplished by modern extreme athletes while under the influence of psychedelics.

Popular perception about the disabling effects of psychedelics and their use in the extreme sports community is mostly a matter of dosage and historical familiarity. LSD is extraordinarily potent - effective on the human physiology in the millionths of grams (mcg), and very small differences in dosage can lead to dramatically different effects. In the first decade of LSD research it was commonly accepted that the “LSD intoxication” occurred when dosing over 200mcg. At the lower dosages, a state was known as “psycholytic” was also recognized, where in may cases cognitive functioning, emotional balance, and physical stamina were actually found to be improved.

This recognition of the varying effects of LSD was lost after the popular media demonized LSD with the help of the various myths and excesses of the “1960s Love Generation.” When LSD made the jump from the clinic to the underground, its early explorers were universally fascinated with the higher dosage entheogenic experience, while the more subtle effects at lower dosages were largely forgotten or ignored. The first “street” LSD in the 1960’s was generally between 250 and 500mcg — a potency powerful enough to guarantee the casual user a truly psychedelic experience.

LSD is somewhat unusual, however, in that a user can build a fast tolerance to the compound after regular (daily use) and while one’s initial experiences on even a single dose can be dramatic, before long veteran psychonauts may be increasing their own dosage tenfold – thus requiring much stronger “hits” than the average user. It was the high dosage of this early street LSD that in combination with the complete ignorance of its early users that would be responsible for the high number of “acid casualties” that gave LSD its fearsome reputation. However, by the 1980’s both Deadheads and the rave generation had realized to drop the dosage of street LSD to between 100-125mcg, while these days a hit may be as low as 50mcg—or as little as ten percent as powerful as a hit of 1960’s LSD. Which is a dosage well below the true psychedelic threshold for most people, and for an experienced user suitably inclined, can certainly be calculated to fall within the forgotten “psycholytic” category."

There was always a strong contingent of “experienced psychedelic users” among the extreme sports community due to the little-realized fact that the seeds of the extreme sports revolution were actually planted with the dismantling and dispersal of Psychedelic Culture in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. As countless numbers of counterculture refuges left the major cities and moved out to small towns in the country in the “Back to the Land” movement, most were looking for new paths to fulfillment after the spectacular promises of the brief “Psychedelic Age” had failed and a new age of uppers and downers was emerging.

They were faced with an obviously dangerous downturn in what was now being universally called the “drug culture.” First heroin, and then, cocaine, dramatically increased in popularity, which marked the beginning of our urban society’s more than thirty year-old epidemic of cocaine and amphetamine abuse. A few turned to the traditions of Christianity, Islam, Eastern, or New Age religions, while many others, perhaps less institutionally inclined, went to small coastal towns in California, Oregon, or even Hawaii to surf. Or they landed in the numerous small towns in the Rockies from Montana to New Mexico that were being developed as ski areas at that time.

These “hippies” bought with them a newly found cultural respect for the land, which had come directly from the use of psychedelics, since the use of psychedelics in nature inevitably increases the spiritual appreciation of one’s role in nature, and of Nature itself. (There are many commentators today who believe that the modern environmental movement was born out of the fact that 25 million people took LSD in the late 1960s). They also had an adventurous attitude toward the land, derived from a general fascination with the Plains Indians and the Wild West era, and from the naturalist vision of the American wilderness that Walt Whitman, Thoreau, and especially Jack Kerouac espoused - the philosophy that one could somehow “find oneself” out among the wilds of America.

At the same time as this sudden influx of these “freaks” to the beaches, deserts, and mountains of the world, technological advances in what were considered minor cult-like sports were suddenly allowing ordinary individuals unprecedented access to the wildernesses of the world. In the mountains, the ocean, and even the air, a new kind of athlete took the concept of “finding oneself in the wilds” to a whole new definition. The invention of these highly individualistic sports (surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, BASE jumping, tow-in surfing, etc.) that sought to use existing terrain in new and inventive ways generally raised the ire of the status quo, and so most “extreme sports” begin life as “outlaw sports” of some kind or another, with their participants regarded as rebels.

The attraction of these types of sports for the newly arrived psychedelic era refugees is obvious, and most of the leading figures of surfing, rock climbing, back country skiing, hang gliding, etc., of this era were clearly cultural rebels living well outside of the norms of society. For this particular branch of the psychedelic tree, the oceans, deserts, and great mountains of the world were now being recognized as the ultimate “set and setting” – a realization common to mystics and saddhus since the beginning of recorded time.

Thanks to the sudden exponential growth of the worldwide leisure industry towards the end of the 1970s, becoming a climbing, skiing, or surfing “bum” became the easiest way of dropping out of contemporary society, a socially healthier alternative to the free love communes of the previous decade that still allowed one to smoke pot, take psychedelics, and mostly fly under the cultural radar. By the 1980s a good portion of any American ski town (and especially the leather-booted telemark skiers) were Dead-heads, and the most effective LSD network in the country–while many other less obvious skiers and climbers still kept the tradition of using pot (a remarkable natural analgesic), LSD, and mushrooms in the mountains alive, where the mountains themselves acted as natural shields from prying eyes.

After the invention of snowboarding, mountain biking, and to a lesser extent paragliding, in the 1980s, virtually all of the newly named “extreme sports” experienced a rapid growth of popularity in the mid 1990s. This resulted in a corresponding growth in the populations of these same small ski and sports towns. Between 1992 and 1997 MTV Sports was one of the most popular shows on cable television, as it glorified the emerging “extreme-sports” to its youthful audience and established the “grunge” and hip-hop music it was promoting as the “in” sound of the now exploding snowboarder population.

The emerging electronic (rave) music of the same time period also appealed to the naturally rebellious nature of extreme athletes and introduced that culture to Burning Man from its very inception, further reinforcing the knowledge of modern psychedelic culture in what are often remote mountain towns. (“Black Rock City” got its name in 1995, the same summer as the first X Games.) Many Western ski towns now have a resident “Burner” population, much in the same way they had “hippy” or “freak” population in the early 1970s, and these small towns generally remain more liberally-minded than other towns of similar size in America.

This entwined relationship between the cultures of psychedelics and extreme sports has in fact been there since the beginning, with what is perhaps the original extreme sport, the much mythologized sport of surfing. After the fallout of 1967-68, when San Francisco and the Haight-Ashbury became overrun, and its original hipster founders abandoned it, the Southern Californian surfing town of Laguna Beach became the defacto center of the psychedelic world when a group of diehard surfers – known as the Brotherhood of Love – became the world’s first LSD cartel.

Along with the smuggling of tons of hashish from Afghanistan to fund their operation, they were responsible for distributing tens of millions of hits of Orange Sunshine LSD. In explaining the connection between LSD and surfing, early Brotherhood member Eddie Padilla remarks on the practical side of a culture based on pot and psychedelics use:

“The effect of the LSD we were taking was starting to demand a higher quality lifestyle, food-wise and in every way. All these surfer people had that lifestyle already in place. To surf, you had to remain sober and be more in tune with nature.

In this explanation, Eddie Padilla hits on half of the real physical reason why psychedelics have always been a part of extreme sports culture, in that psychedelic use is not only more inspiring in the wilderness, but it is also eminently more practical. LSD can easily be a 10 to 14 hour experience, which is too long of a trip for most people, and especially if it is taken at night. If it is taken in the morning, however, and one has the voluminous expanses of the ocean, the deserts, or mountains of the world to roam and contemplate, then the length of an LSD trip is rarely a problem since it will also start to fade with the end of the light of the day.

If one keeps hydrated, and the LSD trip is kept within the regular biorhythms of the user to allow normal hours of sleep, then this “trip” can in truth be one of the least physically debilitating altered states experiences available, with little or no discernible “hangover” – ridiculously so when compared to the debilitating effects of cocaine or alcohol and the extreme hangover they bring. The non-addictive and nonphysically debilitating qualities of psychedelics are of course rarely touted by the popular media, but are well known among communities that are familiar with them, and the nontoxic qualities of psychedelics are half of the physical reason for their enduring appeal among extreme athletes.

The other half of this physical reason that “psychedelic drugs” are so popular with extreme athletes is due to their previously noted psycholytic effects at the correct dosages. Virtually all athletes who learn to use LSD at psycholytic dosages believe that the use of these compounds improves both their stamina and their abilities. According to the combined reports of 40 years of use by the extreme sports underground, LSD can increase your reflex time to lightning speed, improve your balance to the point of perfection, increase your concentration until you experience “tunnel vision,” and make you impervious to weakness or pain. LSD’s effects in these regards among the extreme sport community are in fact legendary, universal, and without dispute.

It is interesting to note the similarities between the recollection of these athletic feats while in this psycholytic state, and descriptions that professional athletes give of “Being in the Zone,” a mythical heightened “state” of neo-perfection where athletes report very psychedelic effects such as time slowing down and extraordinary feats of instantaneous non-thinking coordination. Athletes and normal individuals also claim the same effects in moments of heightened adrenaline – the classic fight or flight response. As LSD research returns to the mainstream in the United States, further investigation into the claims of athletes, such as the extreme sports underground, could result in a radically different perception for the variety of uses of psychedelics.

As an extreme sports athlete, journalist, and advocate since the late 1980s, and a former resident of the Rockies for over a decade, I have witnessed tales of numerous incredible feats on psychedelics in the mountains – none of which, unfortunately, I have permission to tell of here. However, after MAPS asked me to write this article earlier this year, I started asking around for other people’s stories. If you start asking about sporting feats accomplished on psychedelics in pretty much any bar in a ski town, you will here some fine tales. I heard of a hang glider flown tandem off of a mountain top under a full moon with both the pilot and passenger on magic mushrooms, of helicopter skiing in Alaska on LSD when the guide got avalanched off a cliff right in front of the tripping skier, and of radical solo rock or ice climbs of the highest intensity performed on equally radically headfulls of psychedelics. I even heard of someone taking a hit of DMT before they jumped out of an airplane skydiving. (Now that’s crazy!) I also have no doubt that someone rides Slickrock in Moab on mushrooms or LSD probably every single day, and that you couldn’t calculate the number of people who are tripping when it snows in the Rockies. Psychedelic use among extreme sports enthusiasts is simply that prevalent, and has been since the start.

Psychedelics and sports, incredibly, can go together like cheese and bread. An enhanced spiritual appreciation of the natural environment, along with increased stamina and an almost unnatural improvement in balance, are too powerful of a combination not to become sacred among mountain athletes. When I asked a well-known high-altitude climber in Colorado about climbing in the Himalayas on LSD, he just laughed and stated that at high-altitude LSD was like “cheating” since it did such a good job of overcoming fatigue and altitude sickness. He also had no doubt that someone had summited Mount Everest while tripping. But I can see how this could all seem very circumstantial and uncorroborated to someone who is skeptical, so I can offer the single documented example of LSD being used in a truly remarkable sporting achievement. This is not one that comes from the outlaw fringes of the extreme sports, but from baseball, from America’s sport itself.

On June 12th, 1970, the Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher, Doc Ellis, threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in a regular major league baseball game, which he admits occurred while he was on LSD. Ellis had thought he was off the pitching roster for that day and so had taken LSD with friends in Los Angeles, only to find out, while high, that he had to pitch a game against the Padres that night.

As Ellis recounted it:

"I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the catcher’s glove, but I didn’t hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate."

So for those of you who find it hard to believe that someone can ski, mountain bike, or even fly a hangglider while on psychedelics, I submit to you the well documented case of Doc Ellis, and the fact that a no-hitter in baseball is considered one of the hardest achievements in professional sport; while there have been over 175,000 professional baseball games played since 1900, only 269 no-hitters were pitched between 1879 and 2010. Doc Ellis would go on to be in the World Series with the winning Pirates, and was the starting pitcher for the National League in the All Star Game, but this now-legendary LSD-fueled day was his only no-hitter.
