Im sure that someone has said something like this before but I thought of a cool analogy for the psychedelic experience. We all live in our own "houses" (minds). In our houses are our beliefs, securities, insecurities, wants, needs, behaviors, fears, loves, etc. While living in our house, it can get pretty messy. It's easy for us to not notice how messy our house becomes because we get so accustomed to living in it all the time, but it can get pretty messy, at least mine can. When I ingest certain psychedelics, I feel that I become a "guest" in my own "house". I am seeing things as if I am in someone else's house. Seeing the "mess" with new, fresh eyes and a "clean slate of judgement" if you will. These chemicals dont clean your house for you, but for me, they sure as hell show me what a real mess it can become and I feel motivated to clean it up. The more I clean my house, the more enjoyable my next experience is. I also find that psilocybin is the best chemical for showing me my house. It tends to "trap" me in my house, and depending how much I've messed it up, I can either have a very enjoyable learning experience or a tough learning experience. LSD tends to let me enter and exit my house at will, which lends to a more recreational experience. If you really want to do some deep cleaning though, psilocybin is the way to go. IMO.
