First of all this is not an after roll prozac post.Ok i've been prescribed 20 mg of Prozac for the past 3 months, It is hard to tell if it's causing efects on me cause it takes about a month for it to start working and is not a drug that you take and feel the effects within an hour like other pills. My question is, If I begin taking 40mgs a day *double the dose*, will I really feel the effects in a more direct way? I know this should be discussed with my doctor but I was just wondering.....

short answer, yea. if you upped your dose to 40mg a day, and waited a week you would prolly feal it. Remember though you might change so slowly that you might not notive the difference, but maybe other people might say, " hey, your acting different and seem happier. " sometimes changes are subtle. were you prescribed for depression?

what is the long term outlook for someone using PROZAC??what i mean is do the doctors tell you that u will need to use it for the remainder of your lives, or does he expect to have you "taper" off the drug at some point??it would seem to me that one would have to continue using it forever for it to be successful..
also, how well does this drug and other anti-depressants work??i hear several people i know claim that they have been prescribed many different anti-D's and yet they get no benefits from any of them!!

Depending on your condition you might have to use it for the rest of your life. For some people the symptoms returns slowly after youve quit. This is probably the case with most people on antidepressants.
However, if you manage to make some lifestyle changes during your time on medication it will greatly influence your chances of not needing the antidepressant.
Healthy lifestyle changes provides a much better solution to depression in the long term, if you keep it up that is. But for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, simply making those changes will often not be enough.
But it all depends. Some people get cured, some dont. And even if youre cured, depressive episodes can always resurface in the future.

Different SSRI's affect different people different ways. On the lifestyle note - I think the for some people having a "rough couple of months/years etc" is an environmental cause for depression, and thus more likely to be able to return to normal happy/sadness levels.
Example, you just go off to college, your relative you were close to dies, you dont like your classes nad have trouble meeting friends - its possible that in 5 years youll have a happy family with a normal job, and thus not be depressed.
Another problem - Its sort of hard to diagnose BiPolar from Depression, - if a depressed person is having a good day or week and really happy is that seen as BiPolar? Hope this helps...

BIPOLAR DISORDER is the same as MINAC DEPRESSION...half of the time a BIPOLAR person is very "high on life" and very energetic and talkative, and very productive, wheras the other half of the time they feel very sad and miserable, often suicidal..i think the main reason its hard to diagnose is that the person often goes to the doctor ONLY when he/she is feeling depressed and NOT when they are in the "manic" state...
ok, i understand when someone feels depressed because of a relative dying, but is PROZAC often given for these types of cases??i didnt think they were, but more for types of cases where people suffer from clinical depression, where a chemical imbalance is present...is it safe to say that it has been found out that clinical depression is caused by a lack of seratonin levels in trhe brain??i am curious about this, and if it isnt caused by the lack of SERA in your brain, what is it caused by then, or is this still misunderstood by doctors??
there are a few people i know, and many more on the internet that claim they have been 'SCRIBED many different anti-depressants and they didnt work...they are still going to the doctors and are still rather miserable ands have gone onto taking other drugs to self medicate themselves, like COCAINE, and usually OPIATES or ALCOHOL..
everyone gets bummed out here and there, as i do too, especially lately, BUT i have never gone to the doctors because of it..
is it true that the suicide rate in this counrty continues to rise at a steady rate DESPITE the continued research on depression and the doctors "over" prescribing of anti'depressants??

is there any type of withdrawals from anti'depresants like PROZAC??i believe i heard the mental withdrawals are quit nasty, is this true??
