I'm wondering what other people's opinion is on the risk of serotonin syndrome from taking MDMA while on the SSRI fluoxetine.
I've recently read that taking MDMA on an SSRI does not lead to serotonin syndrome but my personal experience has been a little different. About a year ago my girlfriend (who had quit taking her fluoxetine 3 months prior to this) experienced serotonin syndrome after consuming some MAOI tea and a reputable press pill. I ended up taking her to the hospital.

She got back on her medication after this experience but stopped taking it again about a month ago and wants to take another shot at rolling. Does anyone know if it would be safe for her to take MDMA after being off fluoxetine for a month? My experience tells me no.. but I know the last trainwreck she had was probably a result of the MAOI more than anything else.

Ideas/opinions appreciated.

Thanks ya'll

Have a read on www.mdma.net about prozac and MDMA - I was really surprised when I read it.

Heres the bit that surprised me

Some studies suggest that possible MDMA-induced neurotoxicity to the serotonin system can be largely prevented by taking a double dose of fluoxetine (Prozac) or another SSRI shortly after starting to "come down". Post-E Prozac in particular mitigates the oxidative stress and consequent risk of serotonergic axon damage caused by reactive products of dopamine deamination. The long-acting SSRI Prozac/fluoxetine, and its even longer-acting metabolite norfluoxetine, apparently prevents the uptake of dopamine (and any toxic metabolite(s)?) into the serotonergic nerve terminals by binding to the serotonin reuptake transporter with higher affinity than MDMA or serotonin.
