title says all, is it harmful to combine the two?? i know it sounds contradictory but i drank too much caffeine and smoked a couple ciggs on top of it and i feel on edge
laC, I don't know for sure but I can't see that it would be harmful - doctors don't advise against this combination when starting a patient on beta-blockers...
However, while mild stimulants plus beta blockers are not a dangerous combination as far as I am aware, you shouldn't take beta-blockers with stronger (adrenergic) stimulants such as amphetamines as this can cause cardiovascular problems and be dangerous. It is due to unopposed alpha adrenergic activity (part of your nervous system - beta adrenergic activity is blocked by the beta blockers) which can cause severe vasoconstrion. Tis more complex than this but that's the best I can do right now
I have heard that nicotine may act to induce a certain P450 cytochrome enzyme that metabolizes propranolol, thus making it necessary to 'up' the dose of propranolol.
I have experienced no ill effects with the propranolol/caffiene combo.
thank you all for all of your responses!! i went to an IOP last night and there was about 50+ people, i took 10mgs propanolol and i had 0 anxiety!! it was amazinggg
