I am looking into promethazine as a sedative for my inability to fall asleep. however at present I do not goto sleep due to anxiety, and while i think the sedative effect should be enough to get me into bed, but for that reason i am worried about the possible side effect of anxiety that is listed for promethazine. I would prefer to take minimal tablets

Promethazine is a sedating antihistamine, it shouldn't really cause anxiety unless you dose it way too high.

Taken as prescribed it should just make your head feel really fuzzy and make you want to sleep.

If you want to avoid pharmaceuticals, some other insomnia remedies (some work for anxiety too):
Calming herbs like hops, valerian, lemon balm, chamomile, lavender.
Hot baths/showers.
Kava-kava root.
Cannabis indica.
Exercising during the evening, before you get ready for bed. (allow a cooldown period)
White noise, or something like rainy mood
Melatonin (and naturally enhancing melatonin production by avoiding blue/white light at night)
Avoid stimulants like methylpheindate, amphetamine, guarana, caffeine in the afternoon
Theanine (amino acid)
A glass of red wine
Don't go to bed hungry.
Make sure your pillow is in good shape - if it's too squishy your neck may not be getting enough support.
Multivitamins and minerals for good measure.

thanks sekio, those are some really good recommendations, a mini insomniac's bible. I jog every afternoon (4-5pm), I use Cannabis heavily and that does a great job during the day however at night it does not have that kick that makes me want to close my eyes and climb into bed and I do use indica at night and have been and at the moment I am using the absolute heaviest indica I am able to procure and am only slightly relaxed and still have anxiety/racing thoughts as I sit here in the dark unable to sleep (I only opened the computer to check the thread for replies, so thanks), I keep a fan on outside my door, I discontinued my use of amphetamine months ago and don't drink caffeine or alcohol. I am hesitant to use supplements like melatonin because it has had questionable results in the past for me (my anxiety/racing thoughts worsened afterwards), I eat tons however I could throw a pizza in but don't want an excuse to be up for another 45 mins. My bed is brand new. my pillow is new this christmas. I eat healthy (fruit, however I avoid some food groups like protein and maybe shouldn't). Anyways, the promethazine won't happen over night (or actually it may lol) as I see the doctor in less than 40 hours, so I hope something can be sorted out at this point im ready to try anything because I use far too much cannabis (its too expensive too) and I still cannot get to sleep! Thanks for the reply, I will update if I think of anything. Thanks

If you're using cannabis to excess, it can cause anxiety, even if it's indica... try taking a day or two of a break?

Either way - fixing the underlying anxiety should be your primary focus, not the secondary treatment for sleeping disorders.

Melatonin is a winner in my opinion!

I can relate to anti-histamines worsening anxiety. Here's the story I was young had had a few bad trips and was terrified of anything psychedelic as well as social. When I got scripted atarax (hydroxyzine) for sleep/anxiety it had zero beneficial effects it did however slightly induce hypnagognic imagery and the like (ie trippyness) so this naturally upset me and made it harder to sleep. Promethazine is different from other anti-histamines though in that it is much more sedating , great potentiator but that's another story.

Yea ^
I didn't want to be a dick, but the first thing I thought of was eliminating or greatly reducing all caffeine/speed/etc.., exercise, waking up early/correcting sleep patterns, and addressing the causes of the anxiety in your life. If no progress was made after a week or so then maybe a low-moderate dose of melatonin, and sleep-aids like prometh as a last resort. The natural stuff isn't possible for every situation, but it will actually improve your life if you can do it, while adding something like promethazine to your system could be a negative. As far as adding anxiety IIRC it sedates pretty well when you are naive to the drug, if you abuse it in higher doses the side effects become more noticeable. Could possibly become an issue if you become tolerant to the sedation and have to increase the dosage.
good luck

i've been scripted promethazine for anxiety and as a sleep aid, and while i find it absolutely fucking useless as an axiolytic although i did find that dosages around 50-100mgs helped me sleep. but it had too many unpleasant side effects.

^ in promethazine is promethazine. and what in the everliving fuck do you mean with a heroin base? if you mean cough syrup has diacetylmorphine in it.... well. i'm not even gonna dignify that with a response, because the stupidity boggles my fucking mind.
