Okay, let me say that I have taken theraputic doses of a cough syrup with promethazine in combination with DXM, and had no bad or even unusual effects when I took that. I recently have become better acquainted with promethazine on its own. The first two times I took promethazine (25 mg) on its own were not that odd, but I noticed it was VERY sedating. It felt much more sedating than diphenhydramine, and really stimulated my appetite. As I was falling asleep the first two times I noticed some auditory hallucinations, but nothing really big, just some bells and beeps. I slept very well, was slow to get up, and felt almost stupified the next morning. I was very drowsy.
The third time, though, was down right odd. I took 25 mg as I had the other two times, and noticed first the sedation and appetite stimulation, and after eating the sedation seemed to intensify. Now I do take xanax, but that's an everyday thing
, so it wouldn't really have effected the effects of the promethazine other than help in the sedation. Anyhow, maybe 90 minutes after taking it I started to nod off/sleep. Whatever it was it was odd, it was almost like an opiate-induced nod in how I was slipping in, and out of "sleep". But during this period I was having wild visual hallucinations, and wasn't very aware of where I was, and just felt delirious. It was really not unpleasant, but not very pleasant either. I wasn't frightened, because I was just too out of it. I would go between knowing a little of what was happening, not at all knowing, and I guess sleep. I don't very well remember much of it. But this lasted for a good 45 minutes. I "woke" from this state by my own power, and once up felt fine, sedated and groggy, but perfectly with it. I ate something more, fell back into this state, and then fell asleep. When I was awoken I was sweating, and irritable, and don't well remember going up to my bed.
So I don't know if this is more of a trip report or what, but am I sensitive to promethazine? I know in higher doses anti-histamines function as deliriants, but 25 mg of promethazine? I will say it didn't exactly force me into delirium, but still it did induce it or something like it. How can anyone take this with opiates, and enjoy the experience? It is so sedating, and not like a benzo, obviously. Now one thing that is a little different, is that I started an SSRI not long ago, but can't really think that has anything to do with this experience.
What do you all think? It will be good for sleep if I need it, but it is kind of crazy.
