Promethazine Delerium Question

A while back I took 2 Meprozine capsules (each capsule is 25mg Meperidine (Demerol) and 50mg Promethazine). I got the usual ever so slight feeling of being 'out of it' aswell as the calm and peaceful contentment. I always thought it was because of the Meperidine, and figured that the Promethazine just made me sleepy.

Now, I'm not sure.

I recently read on Wikipedia that Promethazine is a weak Dopamine agonist. Does this mean potential to induce a feeling of well-being? Anyways...

A while back I had tried twice on two separate occasions to experience diphenhydramine (Benadryl) delirium. First I tried 250mg, then 300mg. Nothing, except for some weird kinda scary nightmares, but nothing when my eyes were opened. Well... once I woke up when I was dreaming that some elephant-man's head was under my head, I opened my eyes and looked at my pillow and freaked out for like 1 second cause I thought there really was some weird dude's head under mine. Haha. But that was really it.

Now after I had taken this Meprozine, the next day I took 4 Benadryl to see if I could potentiate the declining effects to give them a little boost. Boy did it! I still felt calm, and relaxed, but super tired. I turned off the lights and went to bed, and started day dreaming (a lot about Modern Warfare 2 actually, lol). Then I sensed this evil 'presence' in the room. I immediately realized that I was getting 'delirious.' I hoped for something better than my pure Benadryl experience, and I actually got something out of it! (Mind you, I actually enjoy delirium. It's scary... but cool. I also enjoy horror movies in theaters... might be a correlation there.)

This is what happened- about half an hour before I fell asleep, I looked at my legs, which were bent up in front of me under the blanket, but I didn't see them! Instead of my knees under my blanket, I saw a black and evil Final-Fantasy-like FORTRESS with 2 glowing silver eyes near the top that looked like they were from a bat that was perhaps perched on top of the fortress. I couldn't tell if it was a fortress with lights, or a bat with glowing eyes. BUT IT WAS EVIL! I knew that. I had this intense feeling of horror for like 2 whole dreadful seconds, then the hallucination disappeared and I realized what had just happened. OMG I HALLUCINATED! I couldn't go to sleep after that. My horror turned into excitement and i waited for like half an hour so I could see something else again... but I fell asleep. But, it was super cool.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows if Promethazine alone can induce delirium and if anyone else had any sort of experience with it.

Also, is Promethazine significantly dangerous for 'recreational' use? I'm not doing this often, I just want to experience full-blown delirium at least once. Maybe I might not actually like it... but I think I will.

It's anticholinergic drugs that induce Delerium. Not dopamine agonists. Dopamine can induce psychosis but that would take a while to happen. I don't have any more suggestions.

i went into full blown delirium on 500mg's of promethazine.. i had taken these kind of dosages before without the delirium, just the sedation, but this time i was coming down off 3 XTC pills and .25Gof MDMA... i went completelety delirious... i was so unawaare of my delirium that i went to make lunch in the kitchen where my mum and little brother were and continued talkin to my imaginary friends, my mum called a doc who sectioned me to the psych ward... spent a day there, saw the psychiatrist, explained what had happened and let me go...

It's anticholinergic drugs that induce Delerium. Not dopamine agonists. Dopamine can induce psychosis but that would take a while to happen. I don't have any more suggestions.

I don't think you understand what I said. According to Wikipedia, Promethazine is an anti-cholinergic as well as a slight dopamine agonist.

umm, because most xtc pills are cut with other agents, such as coke and heroin. He took some mdma along with his xtc pills. Not that hard to comprehend......

I suspected that, but don't be an ass. And the reagents are not usually cocaine and heroin. Methamphetamine is way more common in that context. Even more so is caffeine.

IMO promethazine is only useful for what its sold/prescribed for, and for potentiating opiates (which it does very well)

You only need 50mg's for that tho, and even that dose can make you feel like shit the next day if you take it too often.

Well most xtc pills have various other products in them, including MDMA, and i don't know how much MDMA there was in each pill...

you do know the difference between xtc pills and MDMA?

NO, promethazine is definetly not a dopamine agonist, in fact , wikipedia says its a dopamine ANTAGONIST, which blocks dopamine receptors. it has one tenth of the antipsychotic action as thorazine.

Promethazine likely caused delirium via blocking of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. i have taken large doses of diphenhydramine (another acetlycholine blocker(most of the older antihistamines also block acetylcholine as well as histamine) and i was very delirious, and the hallucinations seemed very real.

if u REALLY want delirium try angel trumpet, it has strong anticholinergic effects and strong delirium, be careful though with angel trumpet

i doubt u would like it , in fact delirients have a very low "likeability" according to erowid , and this is supported with my experiences with high dose diphenhydramine. delirium sounds appealling but its not, most of the reason its bad is due to the unpleasant feeling that anticholinergics give you.

as for the safety: angel trumpet is unsafe since u dont know the exact concentration of atropine and scopolamine in each trumpet therefore many people take too much and they develop delirium lasting for days, they develop extremely high fevers (like 105+) capable of damaging the brain with their heat, etc. And also i really havent seen a good angel trumpet/anticholinergic experience on erowid. nobody had fun with them (besides a lucky few). read about angel trumpet on erowid.

Thanks for the helpful post. I doubt I'll be trying any delirious plants anytime soon though, considering the guess-work involved in the dosing.

I experienced slight Delirium from as little as 125mg. Thought someone jumped through my window and ran across my room, then out my door. I wasn't particularly bothered either lol
I realize how silly that was now 8)

And yea, it's a slight Antagonist of Dopamine - I thought to myself in the past if this would actually lessen euphoria experienced by Opiates but I'm not sure to be honest.
Seems to work nicely for a bit of potentiation / synergy really.
