PRISM stuffs

I have a huge amount of respect for the guy, but I can't say I'm at all surprised about the whole Prism thing. I think most BLers are pretty low down on the naughtiness scale, and not doing anything interesting enough to be on their radar.

Errm no. No certainly not. Not in my book. Maybe yourself but certainly not others that your supposed to care for.

You're twisting what I'm saying.

I don't think I am. I just don't agree with you. You're saying that, in your opinion, he shouldn't have done this because he has family. I'm saying that if he felt it was the right thing to do then he should have done it.

No-one is going to assassinate his mum. They don't get to see him again & get some unwelcome media/police attention. Yer man obviously decided that it was worth it. I agree with him.

I probably wouldn't do the same to be fair, but that's because I'm not "some sort of hero".

in classic spy lore, its supposedly safer to go public with these things. in order to reduce the likelihood of a random accident befalling you. whether you believe that the government would remove members of the public or not, a number of people in america in the past have suspiciously and rather fortuitously ended up topping themselves out of the blue, without letting family members know, etc. though whether this comes from the top directly or is just a product of shady department employees seeking to remove thorns from their masters' sides is open to conjecture

Well we agree on something; we don't agree with each other.

What he did was his choice, I just don't think it's legendary or heroic and some perspective is needed.

He even said himself in the guardian that the CIA may pay off triads to kill him in Hong Kong. its safer for him to go public about the story.

You've quoted that twice now, why so angry with that particular comment?

Lol, I'm not. If anything I was quoting that because I'm not 100% sure I totally buy into him being a "hero" so "some sort of hero" was more appropriate. I think you're still overstating the value of his family/girlfriend in the grand scheme of things though. So, hero or not, I still think he did the right thing.

Errm no. No certainly not. Not in my book. Maybe yourself but certainly not others that your supposed to care for.

You're twisting what I'm saying.

Considering what's been happening to Bradley Manning (and for what reasons) over the last year or so, have no doubt that Ed and his family will of known EXACTLY what they were letting themselves in for.

Well, not exactly, but in theory they will have decided between themselves that this was going to happen. One can obviously never truly understand the magnitude of such a decision until they felt the actual realtime impact, but they would have known exactly what was in store for them and the level of shitstorm this would generate. I would be surprised if they hadn't agreed this together.

In terms of Politics and events, this thing is fucking HUGE. Biggest thing to have happened in politics in a decade. The effects are yet to be fully appreciated. It's BIG news, it will shape future political policy and will affect relations between the differing factions of the political spectrum for a long long time. CIA, private security firms, ... huge huge huge impact.

It really is groundbreaking. The US Govnt is being placed in a position it didn't choose to be in, it's being forced to admit something it's declined to offer freely by its own admission. Something it's KEPT from its citizens

The US constitution is built upon the philosophy of maintaining freedom of the individual, and the Govnt have been officially exposed in taking part in underhand/UNDECLARED surveillance of it's people, to a nation that prides itself on being one the freest nations on earth.

This is fucking HUGE.

He brought it upon them

No, the people he worked for did/can/will bring it upon them. One of the points of principle he is standing up for is that "they" can do this to anybody they damn well choose to and have precisely zero right to do so. Yes we all knew this stuff went on, but is a whole other matter having actual proof of it. This is a Big Thing. Man's a hero whatever happens now - at least he tried. Yes it may bring a bit of heat to friends and family and GIRLFRIEND (I really don't get why that one is being especially singled out though :?) but what he is trying to do is to improve the lives of literally BILLIONS of people. And save the lives of a fair few too. That's pretty frikkin heroic in my book. Perhaps the kinda heroism that is doomed to failure but at least he tried and will be remembered and respected for that for a long time to come.

v. important in light of the fact our own government wants to inmplement laws doing the _exact_ same thing here.
Indeed. Ms May needs a good arse raping.

I didn't get to listen to the Hague reaction to what's been happening but gonna catch up on everything tonight

hey ceres, ever heard of the star wars/marconi deaths? altogether very bizarre

during the 1980's, top secret research was being conducted amidst the cold war via the marconi company. at least 30 people involved in the project went on to kill themselves or die mysteriously

dr kenneth bowden was one such case. a cpu scientist involved in the case after attending a social event crossed four lanes of traffic & ploughed off the edge of a cliff. officials said blood was found to be over the alcohol limit. friends & family with him at the event stated he had not been drinking

roger hill, designer at marconi. died of apparent self inflicted shotgun blast - no fingerprints found on weapon

johnathan walsh, coms expert employed by marconi parent company. expressed fear for his life - found a few days later dead after falling from his hotel balcony

ashaad sharif, cpu analyst at marconi. drove to bristol, tied rope around a tree & then his neck, got into his car & drove away, dying of decapitation

hague sounds like such a bellend talking about it, can't stand the bloke.
His vocal style fucks me off no end .... laborious, monotonous, bored ... urgh ... not to mention he's a fucking tory etc etc ... Just interested in the official Brit stance tho.

orf to eat tea/pizza ... back laterz ... <3

marconi deaths cont'

peter ferry, marketing director at marconi - found with electrical leads in his mouth, shocked to death

alistair beckham, employed at plessey defence systems - a company directly related to marconi - also found dead with electrical wires on his body and handkerchief stuffed in his mouth

project star wars SDI ended in 1988. deaths ceased after 1988. hmm...

Never mind his old girlfriend, he'll have new ones coming out of his ears now. However, he won't be able to trust any of them.... which is an excellent starting point for a relationship anyway... snakes with tits! Wheels within wheels. Covered with snakes... with tits! Anyway, all of this points to our freedom being better than his mouldy old ex girlfriend anyway. res ipsa loquitur - 'it's a thing'. <3

it was to complement jancrow's mouldy old gf comment. I just removed it now tho cause it didn't make much sense!

for GoS ... and in contradiction to what I wrote earlier about his family most probably knowing:
Q: Does your family know you are planning this?

A: "No. My family does not know what is happening … My primary fear is that they will come after my family, my friends, my partner. Anyone I have a relationship with …

I will have to live with that for the rest of my life. I am not going to be able to communicate with them. They [the authorities] will act aggressively against anyone who has known me. That keeps me up at night."

taken from the full article on why he did what he did, here.

.....

NSA Prism scandal: Russia ‘would consider Edward Snowden asylum claim’

is this to deflect scrutiny of their own programs? not sure how surveillence orientated they are.
