Prescription Painkillers: Companies Attempt Abuse-Proof Opioids

Here's a wild idea make pills that are made for injection. That way you reduce the complications from IV drug use dramatically and i doubt the od's will increase much.

If we were going to go that route I'd rather provide people with ampules that were made for injection. If drugs were available over the counter in portion-controlled standardized doses, I suspect there'd be fewer ODs than there are now.

Well, the example in the article Acurox, is available as IR oxycodone combined with niacin in a 5mg oxycodone:30mg niacin ratio (it is also available as oxycodone only, but designed to gel up if snorted or dissolved to inject). The idea is the unpleasant effects of niacin in high doses will deter people from abuse.

No, the Acurox that is up for FDA approval DOES NOT have niacin. Seekingalpha had an article on a few new abuse resistant opiates recently that you may find quite informative.

Also, from Acura Pharma:

Except for nasal discomfort, crushed and snorted Acurox® Tablets were generally well tolerated. The majority of adverse events were mild and consistent with the intended nasal discomforting effects of crushed Acurox® Tablets. There were no serious adverse events reported.

Acurox are supposed to gel up and not be injectable but if you are willing to put up with the burning snorted Acurox are supposed to be well tolerated haha

But, even Acura Pharmaceuticals own studies conclude that eating a high fat meal before ingestion mitigates the niacin flushing sensation (other sources say a single dose of aspirin or ibuprofin would as well), so it's unlikely to be too effective.

IMO, there is no such thing as an "abuse proof" opioid. I think the abuse potential cannot be separated from the therapeutic effects of these drugs.
imho, we'll have separated them within 10-25 years. what then?

What the fuck mechanism was that the coating that took 10 seconds to peel off? And what's up with the sentence underneath it, 'it didn't take junkies long to blah blah'? Yea it didn't take us long to figure out, gee if I crush this up im gonna get high. I figured that out when I was 17 and chewed up 2 40mg yellow OCs.

The coating on the original OC's was NOT the "time-release" part of the pill!!! It was the solidity of the pill that made it time release... Thats why all you had to do to make it instant release was to crush it.. The coating that came off was just that...A COATING of color on the pill!

by god!

Yeah, that's why I said exactly what you just said in my post, crush it to make it instant release.

by god!
