About a year ago my doctor(rheumotologist) prescribed me with the drug Ultram for pain (pain which has basically been diagnosed as anything from arthritis, fibromyalgia, to an unknown birth defect) At my last visit about two weeks ago...I told him that I have been in more severe pain then before and have had to up the dosage from 50mg at night...to about 150mg (although I occasionally take up to 250mg when it gets really bad, but I left that part out) He apparently took that as I sign that I was becoming addicted to it's semi-narcotic side affects and told me he would no longer prescribe the ultram, but gave me low doses of an antidepressant. I have tried many of them before....all of which without any results. My question is this: has anyone ever had to convince their doctor that they seriously needed their prescription when he was threatening to take it away and if so what were the magic words used to make him change his mind? Or...does anyone know of a certain kind of doctor...whether it be pain specialist, or even an ER resident!!...that is more likely to prescribe something then the doctor I have now? Any response would be greatly appreciated at this point. Thanks

Going from 50 mg. to 250 mg. is a bit much...Don't you think?
If you are in EXTREME pain.. go to the E.R. (if you don't mind waiting HOURS)

I usually lay it on thicker than it is..like tell him you can't sleep b/c the pain keeps you up all nite.
Your depressed b/c of the pain, you can't concentrate.
He may put you on something different, like Vicoden, Vioxx, percodan,Naproxen...who knows?
Good Luck!

Yeah! sounds like you should try a different doctor!
Just try any kind of family physician, He probably will deffinately be able to give you something better then an anti-depressant for pain.

Dude, you gotta take BABY STEPS when it comesto narcotics - even something like Ultram (thats what it was?) .. you can say "the meds help, but I feel as though they are not as effective as they originally were"... but you NEVER, EVER, EVER admit to taking it upon your self to up the dose - thats the #1 sign of abuse...
AS FOR THE EDITED SOURCES
From what I have heard, the source mentioned is nothing more then a seller of lists of online pharmacies... either way, fromthe looks of the website (ADVERTISING C-II DRUGS) it something I decided to restrict - sorry guys!

I guess the reason that I told him I upped the dosage was because I had been on it a year and he basically gave me the go ahead to take it whenever I felt it necessary so long as I didn't exceed 400mg a day. That's why I was surprised he suddenly decided to be uptight about it. ALthough he has made me realize you never devulge too much info to your doctor. About the opposite of what a doctor is supposed to make you feel if I'm not mistaken.

It's a tricky game... some thing you CLEARLY thik would help you get more of a drug will slam you, while things that seem to be of no importance can be the golden key... you can re-enforce the idea of being a "non-abuser" with a patented PhreeX line -
"My primary doctor gave me Halcion to sleep, often the pain is enough to keep me awake at night but I don't like takingthos, they make me feel all groggy the next day, if I had something for the pain I could FINALLY get off those.."
Good luck!
